Vitamin D in Pregnancy

Vitamin D DeficiencyPre-Eclampsia2 more

Danish pregnant women are recommended ad daily vitamin D supplement of 10 µg. Despite the fact that 9 out of 10 women take vitamin D supplements, more than 40% of pregnant women are vitamin D deficient, putting them at an increased risk of pregnancy complications like fetal growth restriction and pre-eclampsia. Our hypothesis is that pregnant women would benefit from an increased intake og vitamin D and that an intake of 90µg/day can reduce the prevalence of placenta-related pregnancy complications. Combining a double-blinded randomized trial (10µg vs.90µg) with collection of placental material, we want to test if the prevalence of pregnancy complications is reduced and explore how vitamin D affects placenta to improve our understanding of the disease pathology and risk factors.

Vitamin D Status Among Competitive Female Gymnast and Swimmers After Winter Time

Vitamin D DeficiencyInjuries2 more

As indoor athletes, competitive gymnasts and swimmers can face the problem of a potential vitamin D deficiency. In the last decades, indoor sports participants have been faced with the problem of an institutionalized lifestyle and, in some places, a lower exposure to sun, which is also associated with the geographical area with a lower or higher UV index, especially in autumn, winter, and early spring (from October to April), when the day is shorter and the clock shifts to winter time. The problem with gymnasts and swimmers lies in daily trainings in the gym and pool and in the daily rest between two trainings, which can be spend more or less institutionally. The investigators wanted to examine the vitamin D status related to bone mineral density, body composition and various cardiovascular markers among young competitive gymnasts and swimmers after winter time. The investigators want to potentially give more solid but sensible recommendations for trainers, athletes, parents and sports doctors when it comes to vitamin D supplementations for indoor female athletes.

Vitamin D Status and the Adequacy of Vitamin D Intake in Early Preterm Infants

Hypovitaminosis D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient. Deficiency of vitamin D is widespread. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in early preterm infants is unknown. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a daily intake of 400 IU in order to achieve a serum concentration of 20 ng/ml of vitamin D. This recommendation presumes exposure to sunlight, the best source of vitamin D. This study assesses vitamin D status at birth and during hospital stay in infants delivered delivered at earlier than or at 32 weeks gestation. We also assess the adequacy of intake relative to the target set by the American Academy of Pediatrics for children.
