Neighborhood-based Physical and Social Activity for Older Black Caregivers and People Living With...

Caregiver BurdenDepression1 more

The Sharing History through Active Reminiscence and Photo-imagery (SHARP) Program engages triads (primary caregiver, person living with dementia, caregiver support person) in walking and social reminiscence, using a group tablet to access routes and historical neighborhood images serving as conversational prompts. Focus is on adapting the SHARP model to older Black dementia caregivers and on caregiver physical and mental health. Study technology measures sleep and daily step count. Weekly online surveys assess health status. Pre-post assessments measure cognitive function and mental health. Focus groups assess adaptation needs, feasibility and acceptance, and cultural significance.

Talking Mats as Decision Aid for Older People Living With Mild to Moderate Dementia

Mild to Moderate Dementia

Sweden has an aging population and people with dementia often have their needs met in their own homes. The Social Services Act states that eldercare should aim at strengthening older people's ability to live an independent life, in dignity and with well-being. Although few would question the importance of influence and individualized support, research has shown that older people with extensive and complex needs, such as dementia, may be at risk of being excluded from the same opportunities as more privileged groups of eldercare recipients. Care managers and home care staff have to handle both the choice of services and providers as well as the more detailed design of the home care services without developed working methods that support the possibility of informed choices for people with dementia or other cognitive difficulties. The need for some form of decision aid in these situations has therefore been raised. So-called TalkingMats have in previous studies in the United Kingdom (UK) been shown to promote influence in decision-making for people with dementia. Within the framework of this study, our aim is therefore to evaluate the effect of TalkingMats as decision aid in needs assessment and planning home care services for people with mild to moderate dementia. The study is designed as a two-armed RCT study, where the effectiveness and implementation of TalkingMats are evaluated both quantitatively and qualitatively, in collaboration between eldercare in four municipalities in the Sjuhärad region, the Department of Social Work at Göteborg University, the University college of Borås and R & D Sjuhärad Welfare.

Pilot Evaluation of Technology-enhanced Horticultural Activities Among the People With Dementia...

Dementia

Horticultural therapy is one of the effective interventions for the person with dementia(PWD) which could increase their time engaging in leisure activities and decrease their time doing nothing. However, there are some limitations and constraints for PWD to participate in the horticultural therapy especially in the high-density cities (e.g. Hong Kong). This study aims to investigate the feasibility and preliminary effects of adopting home-based technology-enhanced horticultural activities. The program will consist of three face-to-face (F-T-F) horticultural activity training session for a group of 6-8 participants and then biweekly telephone follow-up for 8-week home-based horticultural intervention. Program evaluation will be conducted through focus groups with 15 participants with different levels of stress reduction after the intervention. It is hypothesized that the PWD and their caregiver will have a significant improvement in the cognitive function and behavioral symptoms of the PWD, an increase in the positive caregiving experience in the family caregivers, a reduction of the caregivers' level of stress and depressive symptoms, and enhancement of the quality of life of the family caregivers after the intervention.

Integration Between Learning, Body and Emotions (I-ACE)

BurnoutProfessional2 more

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of training on non-pharmacological therapies (NPT) for people with dementia (PWD) on professional caregivers burnout and well-being in the relationship between caregivers and people with dementia (PWD) living in nursing home. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does I-ACE training, that includes a training in the emotional-behavioral reading of body language and the recognition of one's own emotions and those of others, reduces professional caregiver burnout? Does I-ACE training improves the ability to understand and respond to the emotions of the other starting from the signals expressed by the eyes, the activation of the predisposition to the relationship in terms of increase of salivary oxytocin, the sense of competence of the carers, the ethical climate at the workplace and the quality of life of the resident perceived by the team? Participants will attend twenty-two sessions: two theoretical meetings on dementia and NPT; ten supervision meetings on the methodology for implementing non-pharmacological therapies based on discussions of cases; ten meetings on the exploration of the bodily aspects involved in the relationship through theatrical exercises. The same cases will be re-discussed in the light of the body-emotional approach. Researchers will compare the I-ACE group with an active control group and an usual care control group to see if there are improvements in term of professional caregivers burnout, their ability to understand and respond to the emotions of PWD, increase of their levels of salivary oxytocin, sense of competence of the carers, the ethical climate at the workplace and the quality of life of the resident perceived by the team.

Cereset Research Exploratory Study for Dementia Caregivers

Dementia Caregivers

Caregivers of a person living with dementia (PLWD) experience high levels of prolonged stress that can lead to chronic problems with health, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease that is linked to autonomic dysregulation. Heart rate variability (HRV), measures of autonomic cardiovascular regulation, is decreased (worse) in caregivers of a person living with dementia. Autonomic function is linked to lateralization in the brain, and emerging neuromodulation methods that target lateralized signals in the brain, like Cereset (CR), may be able to improve heart rate variability. Therefore, this pilot study aims to test whether CR can improve HRV in caregivers of a person living with dementia experiencing stress, anxiety, or insomnia, as well as improve self-report measures of stress, sleep and caregiver burden.

DECIDE: Dyads and Families

DementiaAlzheimer Disease1 more

The purpose of this study is to design and test a decision-making program that is tailored to support adult daughters making healthcare decisions for their parents who are living with memory loss to improve the quality of life of African American families. There are two phases of this research study. The first phase will collect information by surveys and/or interviews. The surveys and interviews will ask questions about demographics (e.g., age, race/ethnicity), culture, health, family dynamics, caregiving, and healthcare experiences. The surveys will be completed by all eligible adult daughters and parents with memory loss in pairs. The interviews will be completed by a smaller number of pairs and by all former adult daughter caregivers. The general scope of topics is caregiving experiences, cultural identity, healthcare decisions for persons living with Alzheimer's disease, and related dementias, health, and well-being. The research team will identify and examine key factors that will lead to designing and testing the feasibility of a culturally tailored prototype intervention for African American dementia dyads/families of persons living with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
