This is particularly important given the high prevalence of hearing impairment in older adults presenting to memory services and the risk of misdiagnosis of dementia in this population as outlined above. Cognitive tests validated in hearing impaired populations will also be important as outcome tools for interventional research aiming to find out if treating hearing loss may reduce dementia risk in the longer term.

Effect of Melatonin on Sleep Quality in Patients Dementia
Sleep DisordersDementiaIntroduction: Patients with dementia may suffer from poor sleep quality. Disturbance in the metabolism melatonin may have a role in the pathogenesis of sleep-wake cycle alterations in dementia. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of low dose exogenous melatonin in improving sleep quality. Design: A single-center randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study carried out on outpatients with dementia and sleep alterations. Participants: The investigators calculated a 40 individuals aged 65 years or over with a diagnosis of mild-moderate dementia (Clinical Dementia Rating 1-2). Intervention: Patients were randomized to receive either 5 mg of melatonin or placebo every night for 8 weeks. Measurements: The primary outcome was sleep quality according to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).
Photobiomodulation for Improving Brain Function in Dementia (PBM Dementia)
DementiaAlzheimer TypeA recent study (Saltmarche et al., 21017) examined the effects of photobiomodulation (PBM), a kind of light therapy that uses red or near-infrared light to heal and protect tissue that has either been injured, is degenerating, or else is at risk of dying, in 5 older adults with dementia. After 12 weeks of PBM treatments, delivered with a commercially available, wearable device, the patients with mild to moderately severe dementia showed improvements on the Mini-mental State Exam (MMSE, p<0.003) and Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive, ADAS-cog, p<0.03). The caregivers, who kept daily journals of their experiences during the 12 weeks of PBM treatment, reported better sleep, fewer angry outbursts, decreased anxiety and wandering in their loved-ones with dementia. The goals of this trial are to: (1) replicate this finding in a larger group of individuals with dementia and (2) to examine the underling brain mechanisms behind the changes in cognitive function.
