CariesPlaqueDental caries is a polymicrobial infection originally thought to be caused by Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli. However, unprecedented developments in modern molecular techniques have demonstrated that several microbial species are associated with the disease in addition to streptococci and lactobacilli. Dental caries initiation and progression is a dynamic process in which demineralization of the tooth structure, as a result of acid production from acidogenic bacteria (due to carbohydrate metabolism) is being counteracted by the remineralization of the tooth surface by strong alkali production by certain bacteria in the dental biofilm. The aim of the present study is to identify the different microbiota in the oral biofilm using new laboratory techniques as well as the levels of salivary proteins in caries-free compared with caries active Arab children.

PlaqueDentalABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effects of Salvadora persica (miswak) oral rinse and commercial Listerein mouth wash on oral health of socially deprived madrasa girls. METHODS: Girls aged 18-22 years living permanently in a madrasa of Multan city will be recruited. Sample size and trial duration will be determined using the American Dental Association guidelines. Participants will be randomized into two interventional groups; A and B and will be either provided with Salvadora persica oral rinse and commercial Listerein mouth wash respectively. Pre, mid and post-intervention examinations will be executed by a blind and calibrated examiner using Turesky Quigley Hein Plaque and Loe and Silness Gingival indices. Statistical analysis will include descriptive statistics and two sample independent t-tests. The p-value of <0.05 will be considered significant at 95 % confidence level. Efficacy of Different Chlorhexidine Concentrations
Dental PlaqueGingivitisChlorhexidine is the gold standard of dental plaque prevention, but which concentration is the most effective is not known. The aim of the present study was to compare the plaque and gingivitis inhibiting effect of commercial products containing 0.2%, 0.12% and 0.06% chlorhexidine in a modified experimental gingivitis model. In three groups of healthy volunteers, experimental gingivitis was induced and monitored over 21days, simultaneously treated with the commercial solutions containing 0.2%, 0.12% and 0.06% chlorhexidine. The maxillary right quadrant of each individual received mouthwash only, whereas the maxillary left quadrant was subject to both rinsing and mechanical oral hygiene. Compliance and side effects were monitored at days 7, 14, and 21. Plaque and gingivitis scores were obtained at baseline and day 21. The commercial mouthwash containing 0.2% chlorhexidine resulted in statistically significantly lower plaque scores than the 0.12 and 0.06% mouthwashes after 21 days use, whereas no statistically significant difference was found between the effect of the two latter mouthrinses. A commercial available mouthwash containing 0.2% chlorhexidine proved statistically significant better effect in preventing dental plaque than 0.12% and 0.06% solutions.
Study of the Composition of Dental Plaque
Dental CariesDental Plaque1 moreThis study will examine the composition of dental plaque-a naturally occurring substance that sticks to the teeth and can cause tooth decay and gum disease. A better understanding of how plaque builds up in the mouth may help in developing improved ways of controlling it. Healthy normal volunteers between the ages of 18 and 65 who work at the National Institutes of Health main campus in Bethesda, Maryland, may participate in this study. Candidates will be screened for eligibility with a medical and dental history. This study involves a maximum of five visits to the dental clinic. At the first visit, participants will have a dental examination, and a mold will be made of the mouth. To make the mold, a small plastic tray containing impression material will be placed in the volunteer's mouth and held in place for about 2 minutes to set. The tray will then be removed and a mold will be made from the impression. The mold will be used to make the mouthpiece used in study 1, described below, and the tooth fittings used in study 2, also described below. Volunteers will participate in one of these two studies. Study 1. Volunteers in study 1 will have their mouthpiece checked at the second visit, have a teeth cleaning, and have the mold put in place. The mouthpiece will be worn for up to 8 hours, during which time soft foods can be eaten. Mouthwash should not be used while the device is in place. At the volunteer's third (last) visit, the mouthpiece will be removed and the volunteer will spit into a tube to collect saliva for examination for bacteria. Study 2. Volunteers in study 2 will have their teeth cleaned at the second visit and the tooth fittings placed onto the back teeth with a dental adhesive. The fittings will be worn for up to 72 hours, during which time volunteers can eat a regular diet and brush their teeth. Mouthwash should not be used while the fittings are in place. At the third, fourth and fifth visits, some of the fittings will be removed and, if necessary, the tooth surface will be polished. The last of the fittings will be removed at the fifth visit and the volunteer will spit into a tube to collect saliva for examination for bacteria.

Clinical parameters recorded were peri-implant probing depths and plaque index, width of keratinized mucosa, implant crown characteristics, reason for tooth loss, and diagnosis of peri-implant health.
Collection of Dental Plaque and Saliva for Studies of Bacterial Colonization of Teeth
HealthyThis study will explore how bacteria colonize human teeth and how this process changes over the lifetime of individuals. It will include an investigation of transmission of bacteria that initiate colonization between adults and from adults to infants. Selected NIH scientists and members of their immediate families, including infants, are eligible for this study. Participants provide a small sample of saliva and a sample of bacteria collected by rubbing a cotton swab over the surfaces of the lower four incisors. Adults collect and submit their own specimens; a dentist collects specimens from children.

Pre- and post-application images obtained by micro-CT can be superimposed and differences can be precisely detected. Intraoral scanners in CAD/CAM systems also provide non-destructive image scanning. CAD/CAM are systems that are widely used in dentistry today. Access to the device is easier than micro-CT.
