Longitudinal Study of People Presenting for First Treatment of a Mood Disorder

Major DepressionBipolar Disorder

The goal of this project is to study the course and outcome of illness in individuals who present with a first episode of depression or mania, or who have a recurrent disorder but have never received treatment. We plan to examine psychological, physical, social and environmental factors that may affect long-term outcome in these disorders

A Genetic Family Cohort Study of Bipolar Disorder in Chinese Han Population

Bipolar Disorder

This study intends to find out the pathogenic genes of bipolar disorder by collecting the two-phase family of Chinese Han population with the large sample using a family cohort study design, combined with the new generation of high-throughput sequencing technology and Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), Proteomics, bioinformatics analysis, etc., which is expected to be clarified at the genetic level. The pathogenesis of bipolar disorder. At the same time, the investigators will conduct a five-year follow-up of cognitive function, brain function imaging and other major clinical symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder in the core family, and to explore familial bipolar disorder and sporadic biphasic. Differences in the clinical features of the disorder, in order to explore sensitive and specific biomarkers from a multidimensional perspective (cognitive function, brain imaging, genetic features, clinical features, etc.), which may contribute to bipolar disorder in the future. Accurate diagnosis and early identification and prevention have important scientific significance and clinical diagnosis and treatment significance.

fMRI of Theory of Mind in Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar DisorderSchizophrenia

Theory of mind (TOM), a main component of social cognition processes, refers to the capacity to infer one's own and other person's mental states. Deficits in social cognition are found in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The purpose of this study is to compare the neurofunctional profiles of schizophrenic patients, bipolar patients and healthy participants during the performance of a TOM task. Results may help to understand the neural bases of the impairments in social cognition in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, which may in turn help to propose potential new psychosocial therapeutic approaches in these disorders.

Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor as a Predictor of Response to Treatment in Bipolar Depression...

BIPOLAR DISORDER

There is sound evidence that quetiapine is effective in the treatment of manic and depressive episodes associated with Bipolar Disorder (BD) (Yatham et al 2006). However, even with the development of effective new treatment options, not all patients respond to treatments available. Biological markers have been investigated as predictors of response to treatment and of remission of symptoms. This would explain in part the individual's differences in the response to treatment, taking into account the genetic variability plus environmental factors influencing specific biological markers. A potential biological marker of response to treatment in BD would be the levels of neurotrophins, as they are, in fact, altered during acute mood episodes (Cunha et al 2006). Among neurotrophins, the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) has been repeatedly and consistently reported to be associated with BD physiopathology (Post 2007). Furthermore, medications that are known to be effective in BD, like lithium and divalproex, increase BDNF levels.

An Eye Tracking Study of Affective Disorder Patients With Suicide Risk

Major Depressive DisorderBipolar Disorder1 more

This research tries to investigate the validity and reliability of eye-tracking technologies by using different paradigms (eg. free-view, pro-saccade and anti-saccade) which served as a novel way of evaluating suicide risk among affective disorder patients including bipolar and unipolar depression. All the participants including health control will be assessed by clinical interviewing, self-report assessment, cognitive evaluation and eye-tracking task.
