Prevalence of Major Depression Among Immigrants in Santiago, Chile

Major Depressive Disorder

The general aim of this study is to explore the prevalence of major depressive disorder and the use of mental health services in the immigrant populations in the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, Chile. The hypotheses are: A healthy immigrant effect will be observed in the studied population by which their prevalence of major depressive disorder will be lower than the prevalence in the general Chilean population. A significant association will be observed between the loss of socio-economic position after migration and a greater probability of major depressive disorder. A significant association will be observed between the report of victimization experience(s) in the previous year and a greater probability of major depressive disorder. A significant association will be observed between financial difficulties and a greater probability of major depressive disorder. The sampling framework of the Chilean National Institute of Statistics (INE) from the 2016 Census will be used for the purpose of this research. The sampling units are as follows: Primary sampling units (PSUs): conglomerates or groups of adjoining houses, organized in spatial blocks (200 households on average) Secondary sampling units (SSUs): individual households within each of the conglomerates selected in the first stage Final sampling units: persons meeting the study's inclusion criteria Multi-stage random probability sampling involving a 3-stage sampling design will be used - first, the sampling of the primary sampling units (PSUs); second, the sampling of households within the selected PSUs and finally, the random sampling of a household member. Participants (n=1,100) will then take part in a 45-minute interview. This interview will be a household survey using the modular version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (WHO-CIDI) looking at exploring a broad spectrum of factors traditionally associated with increased risk of affective disorders: Sociodemographics Finance Variation in socioeconomic position Experience of victimization Discrimination Experience of childhood adversity

Universal Preventive Resilience Intervention to Improve and Promote Mental Health for Teenagers...

Anxiety SymptomsDepressive Symptoms6 more

Adolescence is a period of many physical, mental, emotional, and social changes. It is also associated with risk behaviour conducts. Nonetheless, not all youths under disadvantage, adversity, or exposure to risk factors experience negative mental health outcomes. The concept of RESILIENCE provides one possible explanation for the ability of some individuals to maintain positive mental health. Resilience is thus the ability of an individual or community to adapt to life challenges or adversities while maintaining mental health and well-being. The increasing prevalence of mental disorders amongst children (around 10-20% of young people) makes positive mental health promotion in schools necessary through intervention programmes. UPRIGHT (Universal Preventive Resilience Intervention Globally implemented in schools to improve and promote mental Health for Teenagers) is a research and innovation project funded by the European Union´s Horizon 2020 programme (No. 754919). UPRIGHT general aim is to promote mental well-being and prevent mental disorders in youth by enhancing resilience capacities. It has been designed as a whole school approach addressing early adolescents, their families and the school community to finally create a real mental well-being culture at schools.

the Role of Technology in Elderly Patients

AnxietyDepression2 more

Starting from December 2019, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus-2 (SARS-COV-2) disease spread rapidly from China into the world, with about two Mio cases confirmed around the world. In Switzerland, more than 26'000 cases have been confirmed so far, and health authorities declared in March the needs for social isolation and have banned visits to hospitalized patients and to nursing home residents. Loneliness and isolation is a significant concern for the elderly patients as well as for their families that may significantly affect physical and mental health in both. SILVER aims to evaluate the role of programmed video calls with families: on mood, anxiety, fear of death and pain perception in patients hospitalized or in nursing homes during the SARS-COV-2 pandemic. in relieving the familiar caregiver anxiety and fear of death of others in relieving the professional caregiver anxiety. SILVER is an international study involving both acute, rehabilitation geriatric units and nursing homes; we will enroll all the patients present in the participating centers. Patients will be allowed to chose between video and phone calls, the following dimensions will be evaluated: Delirium risk: using the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) Mood: using the 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) Anxiety: using the Clinical Anxiety Scale (GAS). Fear of death (self and others): using the Collett-Lester scale. In parallel, health professionals and family caregivers will be evaluated for anxiety at baseline and every week after intervention set-up by the Clinical Anxiety Scale (CAS). Family caregivers will also be evaluated with the fear of death scale (sub-scale fear of death of others). Finally, to evaluate the appreciation for video call communication in patients and caregivers we will use a Likert scale.

Estimating the Prevalence of Postpartum Anxiety and Depression in the Context of the Coronavirus...

DepressionPostpartum

In December 2019, infection with a new coronavirus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in China and has since spread throughout the world. Forms of varying severity of COVID-19, a disease induced by this emerging virus, have been described in pregnant women. In addition to the direct effects of the virus on the pregnant woman and the fetus, the pandemic context itself is likely to act as a psychological risk factor and to alter the protective factors for mental disorders. This pandemic context is in itself anxiety-provoking, even traumatogenic, particularly because of the potentially lethal infectious risk that it conveys, all the more so in psychologically vulnerable populations. In addition to the fear of viral contamination, the fear of childbirth and the postpartum period, which includes a more or less important part of anxiety-provoking uncertainty, is added to the fear of viral contamination in the perinatal period. This addition of stress factors is likely to increase the prevalence of perinatal depressive disorders and anxiety disorders, particularly the psychotraumatic experience of childbirth. Sanitary and social measures, such as quarantine, restriction of access of accompanying persons to maternity unit, or contagious isolation of mothers suspected of being infected or infected, which may furthermore impose a separation of mother and child, are also likely to have psychopathological consequences. In this context, three maternity wards of the PREMA University Hospital Federation (UHF PREMA) : Groupe hospitalier Paris Saint-Joseph (GHPSJ), Louis Mourier Hospital (APHP) and Port-Royal Hospital (APHP), in partnership with the "Centre de Psychopathologie du Boulevard Brune (CPBB)" and the psychiatry department of the Louis Mourier Hospital have set up a care protocol consisting of a systematic screening offered to women following childbirth on the first day of their pregnancy, aimed at identifying those with perinatal anxiety and depressive symptoms. Women presenting symptoms are then treated according to the modalities adapted to the organization of each of these three centers.
