Cortical Excitability and Inhibition in MDD

Major Depressive DisorderRecurrent3 more

The purpose of this study is to learn if measures of brain activity are different in children and adolescents with depression who are in different stages of treatment. This is important because it may identify a biological marker for depression that could one day be used to identify depressed children who would benefit from certain treatments (medications for example), or to monitor how well treatments are working. Brain activity measures(known as cortical excitability and inhibition) will be collected by Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). TMS is a noninvasive (no surgery or implants) brain stimulation technology which can make parts of the brain work without putting any wires or chemicals into the body. Measurements will take place over one 3-hour visit. This study does not provide any form of treatment. *There is an optional portion of the study that uses a brain scan to gather measures of brain structure and brain chemicals. The brain scan is called magnetic resonance and spectroscopy (MRI/MRS). MRI/MRS uses magnetic fields to study the structure of the brain and brain chemicals. The PI will determine eligibility for the MRI/MRS portion of the study.

Minocycline Hydrochloride in Reducing Chemotherapy Induced Depression and Anxiety in Patients With...

Anxiety DisorderDepression7 more

This randomized clinical trial studies how well minocycline hydrochloride works in reducing chemotherapy induced depression and anxiety in patients with stage I-III breast cancer. Minocycline hydrochloride may prevent changes in memory and thinking and improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.

European Drug Utilization Study

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

The purpose of this retrospective observational study is to evaluate the characteristics of patients receiving Seroquel XR as treatment for their Major Depressive Disorder. The study will also investigate how the medication is used for these patients and if there are any differences in drug utilisation between the included countries. The study is observing patients initiating Seroquel XR during a 9 month period corresponding to 3 to 12 months following the launch of the product in each country for the MDD indication. A drug utilisation questionnaire will be used to collect study data from patients' medical records.

Past Pain Experience and Perception of Experimental Pain

SchizophreniaMajor Depression

Differences in pain perception between subjects with and without psychiatric illness may be influenced by the individual experience, and not primarily by the pathology, although the pathological frame may amplify it.The aim of this study is to establish if the characteristics of experimental pain feeling are influenced by the past pain experience, anxiety and emotion, independently from the diagnosis. The pain experience will be evaluated by an inventory of the potentially painful situations that one can come across through the life, to determine the following points : Number of painful events in the past, number of painful points during the last 6 months, number of painful events lasting more than 6 months, sum of pain intensities (graduated with Visual Analogic Scale VAS from 0 to 10), sum of gravity (evaluated from 0 to 5), the category of pain experience qualification (mostly affective, mostly sensorial, or both). Schizophrenic, depressed and control participants will be recruited, and their pain experience throughout life will be put it in relation to experimental pain tests results (pressure application, ischemia induction), anxiety and emotion (Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale HAD), catastrophizing (Pain Catastrophizing Scale PCS), Heart Rate (HR) variation, Blood Pressure (BP) variation.

Reliability and Validity of Thai Calgary Depression Scale of Schizophrenia (CDSS)

Depression

Depression in patients with schizophrenia is common. Several factors was found to be associated with depression including medical illness, quality of life, positive symptoms, and typical antipsychotics. The Calgary depression scale of schizophrenia (CDSS) is commonly used for screening depression in schizophrenia, however; the Thai version of CDSS has not been validated. This study aims to a.) test the reliability and validity of the Thai version of Calgary depression scale of schizophrenia (CDSS) and b.) identify the prevalence and factors associated with depression in patients with schizophrenia including quality of life, type of antipsychotic drugs, and severity of schizophrenia in 60 patients with schizophrenia at the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

Brain MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scans of Patients With Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD)...

Mental Disorders

Treatment resistant depression (TRD) is a major health concern, with 10% of patients with major depressive disorder not responding to conventional treatments. The investigators propose to compare the MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) brain scans of patients with TRD, which were collected during surgical planning for deep brain stimulation, with age, sex, handedness and education-matched healthy volunteer controls, to investigate anatomical differences, specifically the volume of certain brain structures.
