Perinatal Depression Treatment and Child Development
DepressionThe purpose of this study is to examine whether the successful perinatal depression intervention among mothers (Thinking Healthy Programme, THP) has led to improved developmental outcomes in the children 6 years later. Economic and human resources aspects of the intervention will also be evaluated to determine overall societal benefits from investment in such a program, feasibility of scaling up the intervention and its sustainability in the long-term. The primary hypothesis is that children of mothers who participated in the THP will have better cognitive outcomes and socio-emotional functioning when compared to children of mothers randomized to the control group.

Transient Ischemic AttackStroke3 moreThe purpose of this study is to determine whether simple, evidence-based clinical screening be quickly and feasibly implemented (>85% of patients in an average of <6 minutes) in large-volume urgent transient ischemic attack (TIA)/stroke clinics to identify individuals at high risk for the three most common and devastating post-stroke co-morbidities (depression, obstructive sleep apnea and cognitive disorders).
Cardiac Health, Mood, & Neuroimmune Activation
Heart FailureDepressionThe study is designed to find out more about how mood and the nervous system affect the body's immune system. The investigators plan to study this in people who have been identified by their physician as being at-risk for the development of heart failure. There will be approximately 525 individuals participating in this study at UCSD and at the VASDHS. Individuals who will be asked to take part in this study will have a functional or structural heart problem apparent on an echocardiogram, or a previous heart attack, but no symptoms of heart failure. Some individuals will only complete one assessment (consisting of psychological questionnaires and interview, walk test, blood draw, and body measurements), whereas others deemed "high-risk" on the basis of a laboratory test, will be asked to complete that same assessment every 6 months for the duration of the study.

Study of Genetic Differences in People With Depression
Depressive DisorderMajorThe purpose of this study is to identify genes involved in depression. Specifically, the investigators will analyze some genes that may be related to whether or not a person responds to antidepressant medication. This project is part of basic scientific research to increase understanding of the role of genetic influences in psychological and mental processes involved in the response to treatment for depression.
The Treatment of Children and Adolescents With Treatment-Resistant Depression
Bipolar DisorderThis study seeks to learn about brain function in adolescents with depression and to determine whether adding lithium carbonate to antidepressant medication can reduce depression in children and adolescents. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) will examine brain chemistry and function.
