Pilot Study of an Internet-based Program for Prevention and Early Intervention of Adolescent Depression...

Depression

Major depression is a highly prevalent and severe mental disease that negatively alters the lives of people, their families, and their social environment. Organizations that promote mental health policies have recognized the potential of new information technologies for the prevention and treatment of mental disorders. In this direction, information and communication technologies (ICTs) generate opportunities for increasing patient well-being through the use of on-line software. Such programs often include interactivity, self-monitoring, information materials (sometimes in multimedia format), and exercises on problem solving, recognition and challenging of dysfunctional thoughts, scheduling of activities, behavioral experiments, and other psycho-educational activities. In Colombia, there are few preventive mental health interventions scientifically oriented and seeking to demonstrate efficacy in context. The purpose of this study is to determine whether an internet-based program is effective to prevent and to intervene early the depression in adolescents between 11 and 20 years of age in 2 schools in the Antioquia Region, Colombia.

Exploring Effects of Electroconvulsive Therapy on the Human Brain in Depression - The Danish ECT/MRI...

Depressive DisorderDepression2 more

The main purpose of this study is to determine whether electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) causes any structural or functional brain changes and thus indicating its mechanism of action. The second aim is to find predictors of an immediate response, sustained remission, relapse and side-effects. Thirdly, this study aims to explore whether ECT causes any changes in blood-brain barriers permeability and whether these changes correlate to memory problems. The fourth objective is to examine whether ECT causes any brain tissue damage.

The Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Partnership for Mental Health Capacity Building

Depression

This is a 10-site cluster-randomized implementation science trial that compares two clinic-level implementation strategies to facilitate ongoing Ministry of Health efforts to scale up depression treatment within non-communicable diseases clinics in Malawi. Primary outcomes are clinical care indicators measured at the level of the visit (patient screened yes/no; depression treatment initiated if indicated yes/no; depression treatment algorithm followed at follow-up yes/no). Secondary outcomes are patient health outcomes measured at the level of the participant.

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Healthy Nordic Diet Intervention in Depressed and Non-depressed...

DepressionMajor Depressive Disorder

In the future, we plan to conduct an 8-week diet intervention to investigate whether a healthy Nordic diet improves depression symptoms. The present pilot study tested whether the planned meals and diets were well-liked and accepted by participants (both depressed and non-depressed) in order to ensure that the future diet intervention will be feasible and successful. We also investigated whether any changes in health occurred after 8 days of this diet intervention.

Online Mindfulness-Based College for Young Adults

Depressive SymptomsLoneliness10 more

MB-College (MBC) is an 9-week, 9 session program (i.e., the study intervention being tested in the RCT) providing systematic and intensive training in mindfulness meditation practices, applied to health behaviors relevant to college students and young adults. The MBC intervention will be administered live, online via the free video conferencing platform, Zoom, to all eligible study participants enrolled in the active arms of the study. In addition to the 9-week, 9 session MBC class, referred to as "standard dose MBC" from here on out, investigators will also be testing a "low-dose MBC" version of the intervention, where each weekly session will run 1.5 hours in length rather than 2.5 hours. This is a 3-arm randomized controlled trial. The standard-dose and low-dose versions of the MBC intervention will be compared to a third arm of the study, a health education active control group. Members of the control group will be offered the MBC class upon completion of the research study. The Study Aims are to: (1) Evaluate feasibility and acceptability of MBC delivered in two online formats (standard dose vs. low dose). (2) Evaluate impacts of MBC standard-dose vs. MBC low-dose vs. health education control group on health conditions relevant for emerging adults, demonstrated to be influenced by MBC in a prior study, specifically depressive symptoms, loneliness, and sedentary activity. (3) Explore mechanisms by which MBC may exert effects on aforementioned health conditions, including interoceptive awareness, decentering, and perceived stress. Participant Population: young adults aged 18-29 years of age, residing in the United States who screen eligible will be invited to enroll. Students will be screened using a two-part process taking place online. Research assessments at baseline and 3-month will take place digitally using Qualtrics, LLC (Provo, UT, USA) survey management tool. Participants will be sent secure links via email that can be accessed with their participant identification number. Enrolled participants will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) standard MBC; (2) low-dose MBC or (3) health education control group. The control group will be given the opportunity to participate in the intervention after the study MBC course is completed and follow-up assessments have been administered.

CSF/Serum Biomarkers in Predicting PND/Persistent Pain After Cesarean

Perinatal DepressionChronic Pain

The aim is to investigate if inflammatory biomarkers in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are associated with the development of perinatal depression and/or persistent pain after cesarean delivery. This study will obtain CSF and blood samples in 70 parturients. All parturients will be assessed for perinatal depression and persistent pain, and the presence/absence of these outcomes will be correlated to changes in the inflammatory biomarkers within the samples collected. If present, consistent changes in biomarkers correlating with perinatal depression or persistent pain may be utilised as a predictive tool and facilitate early treatment for these conditions.
