Observational Study to Evaluate Bipolar Disorder Symptoms in Patients Presented With Schizophrenia...

SchizophreniaSchizoaffective Disorder1 more

This study is aimed to evaluate the bipolar disorder symptoms in patients presented with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder or recurrent depression. Bipolar disorder is a group of mood disorders characterised by elevated or irritable mood episodes in patient's lifetime history accompanied by some additional symptoms. In this study modern bipolar disorders screening/assessment instruments will be used to explore the prevalence of bipolarity symptoms in patients who never been diagnosed with bipolar disorders. The results of this study could be useful for more accurate assessment of bipolar disorders prevalence in psychiatric patient population, could help to improve the diagnostics of bipolar disorders and management of bipolar patients.

Reducing Depressive Symptoms During HCV Therapy: A Randomized Study

Hepatitis CDepression

The purpose of this study is to conduct a randomized controlled trial of an 8-visit non-pharmacologic group intervention in reducing the severity of depressive symptoms in veterans who receive IFN and ribavirin for the treatment of Hepatitis C. We hypothesize that over the first 6 months of treatment with IFN and ribavirin for the 45 patients who receive the 8-visit intervention early in the course of treatment in addition to usual care (experimental group) will have lower scores on the CES-D, a standard depression rating scale, than the 45 patients who receive only usual care (control group).

Function of Catecholamines in the Brain During Depression

DepressionInvolutional

This study will explore brain function related to depressive symptoms and will examine DNA for genes that may be involved in depressive disorders, particularly genes that regulate synthesis and metabolism of the brain neurotransmitter catecholamine. It will compare findings in patients with major depressive disorders who are in remission with those in normal, healthy volunteers. Patients with remitted major depressive disorders and healthy normal volunteers between 18 and 60 years of age may be eligible for this study. Candidates are screened with a psychiatric and medical history, physical examination, electrocardiogram, and blood and urine tests. Participants undergo the following tests and procedures in up to eight visits to the NIH Clinical Center: Memory Tasks and Problem Solving and Brain Imaging Subjects are tested with measurements of intelligence or memory ability. They also undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a test that uses a magnetic field and radio waves to produce images of the brain. For this procedure, the patient lies on a table that is moved into the scanner (a narrow cylinder), and wears earplugs to muffle loud knocking and thumping sounds that occur during the scanning process. The MRI lasts about 60 minutes. Catecholamine Depletion Study For this study, subjects take capsules containing either AMPT (a drug that temporarily reduces brain catecholamine activity) or a placebo (lactose capsules, which do not affect brain catecholamine activity) at 9 a.m., 2 p.m., and 7 p.m. on one visit and return the next day to take additional capsules at 7 a.m. and noon. In addition to the study medication, subjects keep a low-monoamine diet (e.g., no chocolate, cheese, smoked meats, and various other foods that will be enumerated) and do not smoke, drink alcohol, or take in food or drink containing caffeine. After taking all the study capsules, the subjects have positron emission tomography (PET) and functional MRI (fMRI) scans, as follows: fMRI: While lying in the MRI scanner, the subject performs a monetary reward task that is somewhat like playing a computer video game for money. The amount of cash the subject can win depends on his or her performance. It is possible to lose money that was previously won, if performance declines. This portion of the study provides information on how the brain processes reward and about the role of catecholamines in this process. PET: The subject is injected in the arm with a glucose solution that has a radioactive substance attached that can be detected by the PET scanner. During the scan, the subject looks at photographs of faces on a computer screen and is asked to tell the gender of the persons. This test shows brain blood flow and measures brain glucose (sugar) metabolism, which reflects brain activity. At the end of the scan, subjects are asked about their mood and general well being. They return to the Clinical Center the following day for and evaluation of their emotional state. The catecholamine depletion study is repeated a second time 14 days or more after the first. Subjects who received AMPT capsules for the first study take lactose capsules for the second study, and vice-versa.

Quality of Life and Its Related Factors of Patients With Major Depressive Disorder

Depression

The purpose of this study was to explore the quality of life and its related factors of patients with major depressive disorder. This study adopted cross-sectional research design. Purposive sampling was used to collect data from 120 patients came from the psychiatric outpatient departments of a medical center and a psychiatric hospital in northern Taiwan. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, which included:(1) demographic data sheet, (2) 5-item Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5), (3) the Center For Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale(CES-D), (4) Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors(ISSB), (5) World Health Organization's Questionnaire on Quality of Life:BREF-Taiwan Version 100(WHOQOL-BREF). Data were analyzed by using SPSS/Windows 10.0 statistical software. The descriptive statistics methods included frequency distribution, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, and percentage. Data were analyzed by using independent t-test, Pearson's product-moment correlation, one way ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression and so on, with which we can examine the demographic, degree of depression, social support and their links to the quality of life. Through the research, we found out the following results: 1.The condition of major depressive disorder patients' quality of life is score range of each subtitle from 4-20. A sum from the following subtitles:physical domain is 11.54, psychological domain is 10.46, social domain is 11.61 and environmental domain is 12.82. The quality of life results is higher of environmental domain, which is poorer of psychological domain. 2. The results of quality of life related to demographic, degree of depression, social support were as followed: Physical domain:the independent variables of significant linear correlation is age, the age of early-onset, type of occupation, living arrangements, economic status, health status, the degree of depression and emotional support. Psychological domain:the independent variables of significant linear correlation is age, the age of early-onset, type of occupation, living arrangements, economic status, health status, the degree of depression, the sum of social support, emotional support, instrumental support, informational and appraisal support. Social domain:the independent variables of significant linear correlation is age, the age of early-onset, marital status, type of occupation, economic status, health status, the degree of depression, the sum of social support, emotional support, instrumental support, informational and appraisal support. Environmental domain:the independent variables of significant linear correlation is age, the age of early-onset, marital status, economic status, the degree of depression, the sum of social support and emotional support. 3.The best stepwise regression models of predicting major depressive disorder patients' quality of life were as followed: Physical domain:the best predicting factor is the degree of depression, and accounted for explained 60.30﹪of the variance. Psychological domain:the best predicting factors are the degree of depression, the sum of social support, the age of early-onset, age more than 71 years old, and accounted for explained 76.50﹪of the variance. Social domain:the best predicting factors are the degree of depression, the age of early-onset, informational and appraisal support, unemployment and age more than 71 years old, and accounted for explained 53.80﹪of the variance. Environmental domain:the best predicting factors are the degree of depression, income less than one hundred thousand, income more than one hundred ten thousand and more than 71 years old, and accounted for explained 53.50﹪of the variance. The results of this study could understand major depressive disorder patients' quality of life condition and provide related research in the future, develop local data and health administration reference of foundation.
