Effect of Diabetes Mellitus on Cholesterol Metabolism

Type 1 Diabetes MellitusType 2 Diabetes Mellitus1 more

HMG CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) are commonly used to treat high cholesterol (HC) in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Several studies have shown benefits of statin among patients of type 2 DM, however, no such data is available for patients with type 1 DM. It is known from studies on cholesterol metabolism using surrogate markers that patients with type 1 DM have higher cholesterol absorption compared to normals and those with type 2 DM have higher cholesterol synthesis. Since statins inhibit synthesis, patients with type 1 DM may not have a good response and may respond better to cholesterol absorption inhibitors. The purpose of this study is to determine the cholesterol lowering effects of cholesterol absorption inhibitors and cholesterol synthesis inhibitors in subjects with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Autologous Adult Stem Cells to Patients With Type 1 Diabetes and a Successful Renal Transplant

Type 1 DiabetesType 2 Diabetes

This is a phase I study to assess the safety and tolerability of infusing expanded stem cells into the pancreas of patients with type I diabetes and a successful renal transplant. The stem cells used in this study occur naturally in the body and are collected from each recipient by a procedure called leukapheresis. The cells are then expanded and differentiated into insulin-like cells in a sterile suite before being injected into the body or tail of the pancreas of the recipient.

Efficacy and Safety of Insulin Detemir Versus Neutral Protamine Hagedorn (NPH) Insulin in Pregnant...

DiabetesDiabetes Mellitus1 more

This trial is conducted in Africa, Europe, North and South America and Oceania. The aim of this trial is to compare the effect and safety on blood glucose control in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes of a modern insulin analogue (insulin detemir) and human insulin (NPH insulin) given as long-acting insulin in combination with a short-acting insulin (insulin aspart).

Treatment With Erythropoietin and Cognition During Hypoglycaemia

Type 1 DiabetesHypoglycemia

The purpose of the trial is to determine if erythropoietin (EPO) can enhance cognitive function during hypoglycaemia in patients with type 1 diabetes. Patients with type 1 diabetes will receive one injection of EPO. Hypoglycaemia will be induced 6 days after. Before (1 hour), during and after (1 hour) hypoglycaemia, the cognitive function will be measured.

Comparison of NPH Insulin and Insulin Detemir in Children and Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes

DiabetesDiabetes Mellitus1 more

This trial is conducted in Europe. The aim of this research is to compare the efficacy and safety of treatment with NPH insulin and insulin detemir. You will be treated with either insulin detemir or NPH insulin once or twice daily as basal insulin. Additionally you will receive insulin aspart as bolus insulin

Six Month Clinical Trial Assessing Efficacy And Safety Of Inhaled Insulin In Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus....

Diabetes MellitusType 1

To determine, in subjects with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus: Whether glycemic control can be achieved at least as effectively with an insulin regimen involving pre-meal inhaled insulin plus a single bedtime Ultralente injection as with a conventional subcutaneous insulin regimen involving 2-3 mixed Regular/NPH insulin injections per day. The toleration and safety of inhaled insulin therapy and its effects after 6 months, if any, on measures of pulmonary function.
