Diabetes, Exercise and Liver Fat (DELIVER)

Type 2 Diabetes MellitusNon-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease8 more

This randomised controlled trial will determine if exercise (150 - 200 min per week, 6 weeks) can beneficially modify liver fat quality in non alcohol fatty liver disease patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (n = 26, 13 per group). Liver fat quality will be assessed via magnetic resonance (3T) spectroscopy (1H-MRS) using validated methods.

Type 2 DiabetesMetabolic Syndrome

This is a Phase 2, open-label, single-arm study of the safety and tolerability of PBI-4050 800 mg daily oral administration in type 2 diabetes patients with metabolic syndrome. A total of 12 patients will initially be enrolled for study participation. A Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) will continuously review data obtained from the 12 patients. When the 12 patients have completed at least one month of study treatment, the DSMB will meet and determine whether additional patients may be enrolled or the study should be stopped. If the safety is deemed acceptable to continue with the study, the study will enroll a maximum of 36 patients.

Effect of Iron Reduction by Phlebotomy for Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes MellitusPrediabetes

High tissue iron is a risk factor for diabetes even within the broad normal range of normal human values. In order to demonstrate the benefits of reducing iron on glucose homeostasis and to better define the parameters for larger clinical trials, the investigators will subject individuals with prediabetes (impaired glucose tolerance, IGT) or early type 2 diabetes to phlebotomy in order to reduce serum ferritin concentrations and determine the effect on glucose homeostasis as revealed by oral and frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance testing.
