Type2 DiabetesCardiometabolic Syndrome2 moreThe investigators are examining the effects of potato consumption on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health in overweight and obese individuals with type two diabetes mellitus (T2D) to provide feasible and effective dietary ways for individuals to enhance their quality of life. The overall objective of this crossover study is to collect data regarding the effects of potato consumption on indices of glycemic control and cardiovascular health among overweight and obese individuals with T2D. The central hypothesis of this crossover study is that the daily consumption of 100 g white potato for 12 weeks will contribute to improvements in glycemic control, reductions in inflammation, and improvements in blood lipids and vascular function in overweight and obese individuals with T2D compared to a macronutrient-matched refined grain (75 g cooked long-grain white rice) for 12 weeks (with a 2 week washout period between interventions). Specific Aim) The assessment of blood glucose control, vascular function, body composition and overall cardiovascular risk after consumption of potatoes (100g/d for 12 weeks) in individuals with T2D compared to a calorie matched refined grain at the initial baseline visit as well as the 6-, and 12-week study visits (for each 12-week intervention period). This aim will assess changed in blood glucose, insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-β as well as the following: blood pressure (BP) markers of endothelial function [flow-mediated dilation (FMD), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and endothelin-1 (ET-1)] markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein) body composition via bioelectrical impedance (BIA), lean mass and fat mass assessment lipid profiles, consisting of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and oxidized LDL (Ox-LDL). Type 2 DiabetesIn a series of double-blinded randomized cross-over acute studies, the investigators want to study the effects of different types of barley on the glycemic index (GI) in subjects with type 2 diabetes. The most common type of barley in Denmark is with rind and demands processing before use. Processing may remove important nutrients from the barley. Some of the original antiquity barley has a loose rind (nude barley), that falls off during harvesting, and thereby reduces the need for processing. The investigators want to study how this ancient type of barley affects GI. Furthermore, some of the investigators collaborative partners have made it possible to increase the amount of amylose in regular barley by genetic modification. The investigators want to study the effect on GI of this new type of modified barley.

Diabete Type 2Pre DiabetesPomegranate fruits and products, including juice, tea, wine and extracts are widely consumed and recognized for their health benefits. Pomegranate fruit possesses strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative properties. The effects of pomegranate on type 2 diabetic (T2DM) conditions have previously been reported. Although 8 oz. of Pom juice (PJ) contains 36.9 g of sugar, 12-week PomJ supplementation did not change plasma advanced glycated end-products, fasting glucose and HbA1C, but reduced lipid peroxidation in T2D subjects. Additionally, acute PJ consumption has been shown to lower postprandial glycemic response of a meal with high glycemic index (GI) and lower fasting blood glucose, and long-term PomJ consumption did not worsen diabetic markers. However, a large knowledge gap still exists regarding the form of sugars in PJ and the hormonal responses to PJ consumption in different physiological conditions. Therefore currently the consumption of PJ is not recommended for individuals with T2DM. This clinical study will focus on the short-term effects of PJ consumption on different diabetic variables to further evaluate the health benefits of PJ for T2DM.

Diabetes MellitusType 21 moreThis study determines the effectiveness of plantar orthoses and custom-made orthopedic footwear in functional level and quality of life of persons with diabetes type 2 and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. This study is important due the loss of protective sensation, feet are vulnerable to minor trauma caused by plantar pressure as well as mechanical and thermal injuries. Thus, Plantar Orthoses become necessary to reduce PP and align the foot. Additionally, it is known that footwear is the most frequent cause of diabetic foot injury, since ulceration is frequently a consequence of the continuous trauma provoked by inadequate footwear. For a higher efficacy in the treatment of the foot, it is also necessary to use custom-made orthopedic footwear, indicated in the treatment of foot pathologies. The lack of studies that evaluate the impact of this treatment on clinical measures such as quality of life and functional level, led to the development of this study, comparing a standard treatment (standard footwear and plantar orthoses) with an optimal treatment suggested in diabetic foot guidelines (therapeutic footwear and plantar orthoses).
