Effect of NPH Insulin, Insulin Detemir and Insulin Glargine on GH-IGF-IGFBP Axis
Diabetes MellitusType 1The objective is to describe the interaction of equal doses of NPH insulin (Neutral Protamine Hagedorn), insulin Detemir and insulin glargine on IGFBP-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-1) production as well as immunoreactive and bioactive IGF-I (Insulin-like Growth Factor-I) after once-daily injection on three separate visits in type 1 diabetic subjects.
Affects of Once-daily Oral Administration of TZP-102 on the Treatment of Symptoms Associated With...
GastroparesisDiabetes Mellitus3 moreThe purpose of this study is to test the safety and effectiveness of two dosage levels (10mg and 20mg) of TZP-102 compared to placebo (capsule that looks like the study drug but contains no active drug), administered once-daily for 12 weeks, in diabetic subjects with symptoms associated with gastroparesis.
Local Registration Trial in China Humalog Mix 50
Diabetes MellitusType 12 moreThe primary objective of this study is to compare the 2-hour PPBG excursion following a standard test meal in insulin-requiring diabetic patients treated twice daily with human insulin mix 50/50, versus the 2-hour PPBG excursion in patients treated twice daily with insulin lispro mix 50/50.
Vascular Reactivity in Kidney Disease Patients
Kidney FailureChronic4 moreDialysis patients suffer from many problems with blood vessels and this is even more so for patients with the added complication of diabetes. Diabetics have a number of reasons for vascular disease and one of the new areas of research is looking at the cells that line the blood vessels, called endothelial cells. It is thought that the number of red blood cells in the blood (haemoglobin concentration) affects the function of these cells. There is very little information available on what haemoglobin level is best for dialysis patients. As diabetics account for almost 40% of dialysis patients worldwide it is important to understand the effect different haemoglobin levels will have on the blood vessels. Hypothesis: Endothelial cell function and the related expansile capacity of blood vessels are affected by different haemoglobin concentrations [Hb] in dialysis patients.
Lantus in the Treatment of Type 1 Diabetes Children
Type 1 DiabetesIn this study, we plan to examine the difference in effect on blood glucose control in patients who will be on either conventional insulin therapy (i.e. using NPH and Humalog twice daily, injected separately) or on intensive insulin management (IIM-several shots of short acting and Glargine insulin). Those on IIM will be mixing the insulin Glargine with the short-acting insulin analog prior to injecting. The Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) results will be used to monitor blood glucose control over a 6 month period. Twice during the course of the study, a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS-a device the size of a pager that records blood sugar readings every 5 minutes) will be used to record all the changes in the blood glucose levels occurring over a 72-hour period.
Alemtuzumab Induction in Islet Transplantation
Type 1 DiabetesOur experience suggests that further research with alemtuzumab is attractive in islet transplantation. Therefore, in this study we propose to combine alemtuzumab induction pre-transplant, with tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil maintenance immunosuppression post-transplant. In the critical early phase post transplant, we anticipate that this regimen will prove to be more effective in control of autoimmunity or rejection events, and have a more desirable side-effect profile, than previously tested combinations of induction and immunosuppressive agents.
European Trial of Immunosuppression in SPK Tx
Diabetes MellitusType 11 moreTo determine and compare the efficacy of Tacrolimus/Rapa versus Tacrolimus/MMF-based immunosuppression (in conjunction with initial short-term steroids and polyclonal antibody administration) in Type 1-diabetic patients undergoing simultaneous pancreas/kidney allograft transplantation. To evaluate the safety of Tacrolimus/Rapa versus Tacrolimus/MMF in terms of drug-related complications and overimmunosuppression-associated complications, particularly under monitoring of the pharmacokinetic profile of all drugs administered.
Efficacy of Diazoxide in Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetes MellitusType 1The purpose of this study is to find out if Diazoxide can partly retain insulin production in newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes patients.
Comparison of Insulin Detemir Given Once or Twice Daily in Type 1 Diabetes
DiabetesDiabetes Mellitus1 moreThis trial is conducted in Europe. The aim of this research study is to compare the efficacy (reduction in HbA1c and in blood glucose levels) of insulin detemir once daily injection compared to insulin detemir twice daily injection administered as basal insulin for the treatment of type 1 diabetes and to verify the safety of use (number and severity of episodes of hypoglycemia, body weight and side effects).
Safety and Efficacy of INGAP-Peptide in Patients With Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetes MellitusInsulin-DependentInsulin is a chemical that the body needs in order to use or store sugar. It is made by a type of cell called a beta cell which resides in an organ known as the pancreas. Type 1 diabetes is a disease where the beta cells have been destroyed so that little or no insulin is made. Sugar levels rise in the blood as a result. INGAP-Peptide is being tested to attempt to create new beta cells in the pancreas, and to restore the ability to produce insulin in type 1 diabetic patients.
