Study on How Fiasp® Can Influence Blood Sugar Levels of type1 Diabetic Patients in Their Daily Lives,...

The purpose of this study is to collect information about Fiasp® to evaluate how effective Fiasp® is in treating elevated blood sugar in patients with type 1 diabetes, compared with the participant's previous insulin treatment. The study will also assess how satisfied the participants are with the treatment with Fiasp® and the impact of the treatment on quality of life. The study has also been set up to learn more about how effective Fiasp® is in controlling the glucose levels during the day and night. The duration of the study is expected to be approximately 2 years. The participation is expected to be approximately 6-8 months for each patient.

The primary aim of this study is to assess the relationship between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and cardiac autonomic neuropathy (CAN) in patients with T1D. The secondary aims of this study are to assess: (1) the prevalence of OSA in patients with T1D; (2) the relationship between OSA and metabolic parameters (such as glycaemic control, blood pressure, lipids and weight) in patients with T1D; (3) the relationship between OSA and diabetes-related microvascular complications (retinopathy, nephropathy, peripheral neuropathy) in patients with T1D; and (4) the potential mechanisms for the relationship between OSA and diabetic-related complications if such a relationship is found.

Type 1 Diabetes in Adolescence

Background: In type 1 diabetes, adolescence is often associated with deterioration in glycemic control, attributed to a poorly monitored diet, little exercise, poor treatment compliance, risk behaviors, endocrine changes with puberty, leading to greater resistance to insulin. Therapeutic patient education (TPE) is the key to successful management of the disease and treatment for adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Ten TPE programs exist in the Mediterranean region in France, and the care teams implementing them wish to promote joint reflection with sick teenagers and families to identify needs and expectations of everyone on priority skills to develop, to promote better management of the disease and improved quality of life. Aim: To study the needs and expectations of adolescents with type 1 diabetes for skills to be developed during the educational sessions, to promote self-management of their disease and their treatment. Method: Four audio-recorded focus groups will be organized in all 10 clinical settings (adolescents, parents and health professionals). Thematic analysis will be carried out from the transcript of the focus groups. Expected results: The results will allow a joint reflection involving the participation of young patients, families, health professionals and the research team to build and implement new educational sessions that meet the identified needs. This action resulting from the research is expected to pool resources in different health facilities providing therapeutic education programs and to harmonize practices.

Stigma related to chronic disease is rejection or judgement or exclusion by others that is related to the chronic disease itself and is unwarranted. We are trying to figure out what proportion of young people with type 1 diabetes experience stigma in Canada. By young people, we mean teenagers and young adults; specifically, people who are between 14 and 25 years of age. This is a challenging period in life when identities are developed and peer opinions are felt to be particularly important. Experiencing stigma in this life period may be especially hurtful and may have bad effects on taking care of type 1 diabetes. This may lead to important medical problems like dangerously low or high blood sugar values. By understanding how common stigma is, we can figure out the need for programs and strategies to deal with it. We will ask young people with type 1 diabetes to help us study this problem by completing an online survey. We will 'advertise' our study through type 1 diabetes clinics, websites, and social media. People who are eligible and interested will click on an internet link and be directed to the survey. Staff at clinics in Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver will also draw their attention to the posters and/or provide small flyers with the internet link for the study. Participants will be asked about their general sense of well-being, their habits and behaviours, and their blood sugar control, including frequency of both lows and highs. They will also be asked if they are willing to mail in a small blood sample. If yes, they will receive a kit with a small lancing device and instructions on how to clean their finger tip, prick it, and express a few drops of blood into a small container. They will then mail this back to us in a postage-paid envelope. We will use this to measure their hemoglobin A1c, an overall measure of blood sugar control. We will use this information to (1) calculate the proportion of young people with type 1 diabetes who experience stigma; (2) figure out what factors and behaviours might predict or signal the experience of stigma; (3) see if there is a link between stigma and A1c control and/or frequent lows by report; (4) explore challenges and solutions voiced through the open-ended questions.

Purpose of Study (The Effect of Viscous Fiber on Glycemic Control (VF & GC) in Individuals with Diabetes Mellitus. According to the World Health Organization, about 347 million individuals are living with diabetes. (http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/diabetes/facts/en/, accessed on Nov. 23, 2015). Over the last decades, dietary fibers, namely dietary viscous fibers, have emerged as a nutrition component that may improve the postprandial glycemic response and hence aid in long term diabetes management. It is believed that supplementation with viscous fibers can control blood glucose by increasing viscosity of the gastric digesta, hence delaying gastric emptying and retarding entry of glucose into the bloodstream to result in a diminished postprandial rise in blood glucose. (Chutkan et al., 2012). Currently, the evidence of the relationship between viscous fibers and diabetes is mixed. The systematic review method depends on combining data from many small studies in order to get a pooled estimate of the true effect. The purpose of this study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the fasting glycemic and insulinemic effect of viscous fiber supplementation. We hope the findings of this study will play a key role in developing the nutritional guidelines for individuals with diabetes mellitus.
