Diabetic Kidney Alarm (DKA) Study

Type 1 Diabetes MellitusDiabetic Ketoacidosis

The overarching goals of this study are to determine whether tubular dysfunction (elevated urine sodium, bicarbonate and amino acids) and injury (elevated kidney injury molecule 1 [KIM-1], neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin [NGAL] and matrix metallopeptidase 9 [MMP9]) exist in diabetic ketoacidosis (age 3-18), whether it is reversible and whether it is related to uricosuria and copeptin. The investigators propose to study a cohort of youth (ages 3-18, n=40) with T1D who have serum and urine collection at DKA diagnosis and 3-month follow-up.

Ovarian Ageing in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

In healthy women, early menopause is an event that is associated with the exacerbation of several risk factors of cardiovascular and skeletal disease. The occurrence of an early menopause may have even greater impact in women with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM-1). A small number of studies has demonstrated that DM-1 patients experience cycle irregularity and menopause at a younger age compared to controls. In addition, initial studies have suggested that also in regular cycling DM-1 women a decreased ovarian reserve status for age is present. The explanation for this early decay in ovarian reserve in DM-1 patients remains unknown. Next to auto immunity, vascular factors may be possible contributors to accelerated ovarian ageing in DM-1 patients. Confirmation of more accelerated ovarian ageing in DM-1 women is urgently needed in view of the added risk factors outlined above. Also, the mechanisms behind the advanced ovarian ageing, with focus on vascular factors, may shed new light on our understanding of the ovarian ageing process per se.

Islet Transplant for Type 1 or Surgical Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes MellitusHypoglycemia2 more

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of islet transplants from human cadaver donors into type 1 or surgical diabetes mellitus patients who experience frequent acute or advanced chronic complications but do not qualify for other islet transplant trials. Under this protocol, patients may receive intraportal alloislet transplant under one of the following scenarios: islet transplant alone simultaneous islet-kidney transplant, or 3)islet after kidney transplant.

Accuracy Characterization Study

Type2 DiabetesType1diabetes1 more

To demonstrate point accuracy of the Abbott Sensor Based Glucose Monitoring System (System) interstitial glucose results against venous glucose reference and capillary fingerstick using the Consensus Error Grid over the wear duration. During the course of the wear duration, the subject is required to be testing fingerstick glucose measurement at least 8 times a day for capillary reference glucose measurements and three in-clinic visits of maximum 10 hours each for venous reference glucose measurements. With every reference measurement, the subject or study staff will perform a measurement on the System.
