Effect of Selenium Supplementation on Glycemic Control in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes...

Type 2 DiabetesPreDiabetes

Although it has been suggested that selenium (Se) increases the risk of T2DM, most evidence comes from observational studies that cannot prove causality. A systematic review assessed randomized clinical trials and found that the risk of T2DM was not greater in those randomized to Se supplementation than in those randomized to placebo. Se is a toxic element in animals and humans, and overexposure to Se has also been linked to detrimental health effects in humans. Previous studies were mostly conducted in Se-sufficient areas. Moreover, the effectiveness of low-dose Se supplementation on participants with elevated glycemic status was unknown. This cross-over, double blinded, randomized controlled trail aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Se supplementation for glucose control among participants with diabetes or prediabetes. Moreover, we also aimed to examine whether selenoprotein P genotypes, Se-related gut microbiota and their related metabolite modified the effectiveness.

Gut-Brain-axis: Targets for Improvement of Cognition in the Elderly

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Cognitive disorders increase with age and in the presence of metabolic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). In addition, digestive disorders, changes in dietary pattern and decreased activity negatively influence the microbiome. The hypothesis is that pharmacological intervention with metformin will modify the composition of the gut microbiota and cognition. The study has a pilot longitudinal design, where each patient with T2DM will be followed for one year. Two groups will be recruited: Group A: The aim will be to evaluate the associations between glucose (measured by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)), cognitive function (by means of cognitive tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)), physical activity (recorded by activity and sleep tracker devicer), metformin, diet (evaluated by nutritional survey) and composition of the microbiota (evaluated by metagenomics), during 12 months (6 months without metformin and 6 months with metformin treatment). Group B: The aim will be to evaluate the associations between glucose, diet (evaluated by nutritional survey), cognitive function (by means of cognitive tests), physical activity (measured by activity and sleep tracker device), the treatment and composition of the microbiota (evaluated by metagenomics), during 12 months.

Digital Individualized and Collaborative Treatment of T2D in General Practice Based on Decision...

Diabetes type2

The purpose of this project is to improve life of patients with type 2 diabetes through an IT-supported lifestyle and treatment intervention. The intervention is based on combining and adapting three existing and effective elements into the IT system of the general practitioner. In this way we will integrate specialist supervised treatment in general practice, individual patient coaching, and improved information exchange and data mining. The intervention will enable individualized high-quality care in general practice, empower patients to improve their lifestyle and facilitate collaboration between hospitals, municipalities and general practitioners. This is expected to facilitate use, assure individually tailored solutions, optimize treatment effects, and strengthen patient engagement. The study is a randomized controlled trial (RCT). It will include 660 patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. The patients will receive either treatment based on the intervention or usual care. After one year, we will assess quality of life and cardiovascular risk factors in both groups and evaluate if one group has improved management of their type 2 diabetes compared to the other. If the intervention proves effective, implementation on a national scale is highly feasible, and the intervention could probably be adapted to other lifestyle-related chronic diseases in Denmark and in other countries.

A Research Study Looking at How Oral Semaglutide Works in People With Type 2 Diabetes in Saudi Arabia,...

Diabetes MellitusType 2

The purpose of the study is to collect information on how Rybelsus® works in people with type 2 diabetes and to see if Rybelsus® can lower their blood sugar levels. Participants will get Rybelsus® as prescribed to them by the study doctor. The study will last for about 8-10 months. Participants will be asked to complete a questionnaire about how they take their Rybelsus® tablets. Participants will complete this questionnaire during their normally scheduled visit with the study doctor.

Association Between Natural Hypoglycemic Foods and Blood Sugar Level: A Pilot Study

Type II Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes patients often do not reach desired control of glycemia despite guidance on changing lifestyle and diet as well as the use of conventional anti-diabetic medication. Parallely in recent years, an array of comparative clinical studies have demonstrated the anti-diabetic effect of more than 10 common spices and food products. Objectives: to evaluate whether proposing a choice of spices and foods products with hypoglycemic effect to diabetic patients can help better control diabetes.

A Virtual Cardiometabolic Health Program for African Immigrants: The Afro-DPP Program

Diabetes MellitusDiabetes Mellitus9 more

A pilot study titled "A Virtual Cardiometabolic Health Program for African Immigrants (The Afro-DPP Program) will be conducted to address the cardiometabolic of community-dwelling African immigrants who have multiple cardiometabolic risk factors including hypertension, Type 2 Diabetes, high cholesterol, and overweight/obesity. The proposed study will recruit a total of 60 participants and will use a non-equivalent control group design to test the effectiveness of the intervention at two African churches in the Baltimore, Washington, D.C. area. The two churches will be randomly assigned to the intervention or delayed intervention group. At the end of a 6-month follow-up period, the control church will receive the intervention (delayed control group). All participants will receive a Bluetooth-enabled digital scale (Omron Model: BCM-500) that measures body composition including Body Weight, Body Fat percentage, Visceral Fat, Skeletal Muscle percentage, Resting Metabolism and Body Mass Index. A Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure monitor (Omron Model: BP7250) will also be distributed to all participants. All participants will download the Omron Connect app which will allow the participants to sync participants' blood pressure readings and body composition readings into the app. The research team will access these readings to monitor study outcomes and participants progress during the follow-up period.

Type 2 Diabetes MellitusCardiovascular Diseases

This study is designed to help patients with type 2 diabetes and their clinicians: (a) identify which glucose lowering medications have the most favorable effects on heart health and other patient-important outcomes, (b) inform the timing of medication initiation, and (c) identify whether medication benefits apply equally to all adults with type 2 diabetes, or may be different based on age, sex, race/ethnicity, baseline heart health status, baseline renal function, or other factors.

MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS HOSPITALIZED IN INTERNAL MEDICINE UNITS (MINDER...

Diabetes MellitusType 2

This is a national multicenter study that involves 54 Internal Medicine Units throughout Italy. It is designed as a replicate of two cross-sectional surveys interspersed with an educational program. The study is composed by three steps. Phase 1 concerns a retrospective data collection pertaining to patients with known diagnosis of T2DM. In phase 2 an educational training (focused on current Diabetes Guidelines recommendations and based on possible deviations from the best clinical practice observed during phase1) will be conducted in 36 randomized centres out of the 54 ones enrolled (cluster randomization). The ratio 2:1 has been selected in order to offer to the majority of Centres the opportunity to undergo a program of training and maximize the potential positive effect of the educational program on patient management. Randomization will be performed at the beginning of the study. Centres will be selected according to their ability to prescribe all classes of antidiabetic drugs. Phase 3 will occur around 6 months after the training and concerns a new data collection mirroring the previous one. In the phase 1, as well as in the phase 3, the data collection will be based on the review of the medical records of the last 40 consecutive patients with T2DM hospitalized in each Centre of Internal Medicine (in total, 80 patients for each Centre). After a period of 6 months from the hospitalization, a phone call follow up will be performed to know the clinical status of the patient enrolled, if he/she has been re-hospitalized after the index admission and current diabetes treatment.
