A Malaysian company by name Formedic Technologies SDN BHD has devised a hand held machine which is supposed to mimic the chest percussion performed by professional physiotherapist to mobilize sputum through the respiratory passage. The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness and safety of this mechanical percussion device in the treatment of airway clearance with conventional chest physiotherapy carried out by qualified physiotherapists in patients suffering from bronchiectasis or Chronic obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD).

The specific aims of this study are to evaluate the amount of high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) gas flow required to generate an equivalent positive distending pressure as that provided by nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) of 6 cm H2O, assess the relationships between positive distending pressure, gas flow, oxygen requirement, and patient weight, and lastly, develop an appropriate protocol to be used in the NICU for transitioning patients from NCPAP to an equivalent amount of HFNC.

This study will last for approximately 14 weeks and will involve 5 visits. The study is being carried out to look at different ways of measuring the effect of drug treatment on COPD. COPD is a respiratory disease which can affect your breathing and daily life. Symptoms of COPD can include breathlessness, cough, and wheeze. COPD varies enormously from patient to patient. The effects of drug treatment are usually measured by conducting lung function tests (breathing tests) using a machine called a spirometer but this does not always provide a complete picture of how well your COPD is responding. In this study we therefore want to look at new and more sensitive ways of measuring COPD. The results of this research will help in the assessment of new drugs for COPD in the future.
