Circulating Progenitor Cells Levels in Periodontal Disease Patients

Recently, a key role played in the ethiology of periodontitis has been highlighted by a subtype of stem cells derived from bone marrow, the circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). EPCs possess the ability to express surface antigens of endothelial and hematopoietic stem cells and to assist in maintaining vascular integrity and the repair mechanism of the endothelium. Among the main markers for the analysis of EPCs levels are CD34+, CD133+ and the kinase insert domain-containing receptor (KDR). CD34+ and CD133+ originate from hematopoietic stem cell antigens whereas KDR is a specific marker of endothelial cells. More specifically, CD34+ and CD133+/ KDR+ allows less mature and mature EPCs to be evaluated.

The outlook of a community-based intervention targeting nutrition and lifestyle behaviour modification among adults with metabolic syndrome (MetS) has not been fully explored. The primary aim of this study (PERSUADE) is to evaluate the effect of the peer support intervention on the clinical outcomes MetS components followed by improvements in the participants' dietary practices, physical activity levels and lifestyle behaviours. The program constructed using information obtained from the published clinical and dietary guideline in Malaysia.

Statin Monotherapy or Statins in Combination With Ezetimibe in Patients for Prevention of CVD

Retrospective observational study of the efficacy and safety of statin monotherapy or statins in combination with ezetimibe in patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The study will include patients receiving lipid-lowering therapy in both primary and secondary prevention of CVD who have received therapy of interest for ≥ 3 months in the 2 years preceding the signing of informed consent, i.e. statins as monotherapy or in combination with ezetimibe in a stable mode (without dose adjustment and/or statin replacement). Effectiveness of therapy will be evaluated based on the data on changes in baseline levels of total cholesterol (CS), low density lipoproteins (LDL), high density lipoproteins (HDL), triglycerides (TG), data on which will be obtained from primary medical records. Demographic and anthropometric data on patients, information on the history of hyperlipidemia and concomitant diseases will also be obtained. Also, the study will collect data on the development of adverse reactions of particular interest during therapy (liver/muscle damage, major cardiovascular events (MACE).

Two independent, but interrelated conditions that have a growing impact on healthy life expectancy and health care costs in developed nations are the age related loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) and obesity. Sarcopenia affects approximately one third of adults over 60 years of age and more than 50% of those over 80 years, which is of concern when one considers that the most rapidly expanding population demographic in the UK is adults >80 years of age. Skeletal muscle is important in regulating blood glucose and insulin sensitivity. Thus, sarcopenia may play a role in exacerbating insulin resistance and progression toward Type II diabetes (T2D). Indeed, the highest incidence of T2D in the UK has been noted to occur in adults >65 years. Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases including T2D and cardiovascular disease. Progression towards obesity is associated with a concomitant decrease in muscle mass, producing an unfavorable ratio of fat to muscle. Thus, obesity in old age may exacerbate the progression of sarcopenia. For the proposed study the investigators will conduct preliminary laboratory tests to characterize body composition, insulin sensitivity, systemic inflammation, aerobic capacity and muscle protein metabolism (in the fasted and fed state) in healthy older and obese older adults for comparison against healthy young individuals.
