Objective: Arterial blood gas (ABG) is essential in the clinical assessment of potential acutely ill patients venous to arterial conversion (v-TAC), a mathematical method, has recently been developed to convert peripheral venous blood gas (VBG) values to arterialized VBG (aVBG) values. The aim of this study is to test the reliability of aVBG compared to ABG in an intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Method: Consecutive patients admitted to the ICU with pH values <7,35 or >7,45 are included in this study. Paired ABG and aVBG samples are drawn from patients via arterial catheter, central venous catheter and/or peripheral venous catheter and compared.

Physical activity is a key stimulus for bone metabolism through both direct mechanisms (e.g., as a result of the applied load and/or impact) and indirect mechanisms (e.g., the activation of several metabolic pathways and the production of several mediators and effectors that have systemic effects). However, different kinds of physical activity exert different effects on bone and endocrine system. Aim of the study is to investigate the effects of different kinds of physical activity on bone metabolism and on the relationships existing between bone metabolism, energy metabolism, hormone profile, and organ functionality.

Large amounts of experimental and animal evidence have confirmed that iron accumulation is associated with bone loss. However, it is still lack of the clinical studies relating iron accumulation to bone loss, especially in the pathological conditions during our Chinese. In this study, the investigators aim to assess the association between the levels of serum ferritin and bone mineral density in Chinese healthy postmenopausal women.

Cure rates for childhood malignancies have improved at a remarkable pace.With the increasing cure rate came recognition of the long-term detrimental effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, known as "late-effects". Endocrine late-effects are particularly prevalent in childhood cancer survivors. Growth Hormone (GH) deficiency is common following radiation to the head and leads to impaired growth, hence GH replacement is given to achieve optimise final height in childhood. In the adult GH is important to maintenance of bone, muscle & fat mass; vascular risk factors; and quality of life. This observational study aims to determine the long-term effect of low dose GH replacement on development of bone, muscle and fat mass; vascular risk; and quality of life in the early years after achievement of final height, a time known as "transition". GH is thought to be essential to development of bone, muscle, and fat mass during this time period. Patients will be identified in the late -effects endocrine clinic, aged 16-22yrs, who are severely GH deficient. 30 patients will be recruited to the study who wish to continue receiving GH replacement, all of whom will receive recombinant GH. An additional 30 patients who do not wish to receive GH replacement will provide a parallel control data. All patients will undergo baseline assessment including examination; routine blood tests; urine dipstick; measures on height, weight, waist, and 24 hour blood pressure. Measures will be repeated at six months, and then annually until 25 years of age. Bone density will be measured at baseline, after two years and at age 25yrs. Patients requesting GH replacement will require initial additional visits to teach self injection, then 2-4wkly to assess when correct dose of GH is achieved. The study will enable assessment of the beneficial effects of GH replacement during transition in GH deficient survivors of cancer to be realised.

This study aims to characterize the pathophysiological mechanisms of 21 different metabolic myopathies. The study will focus on exercise capacity and the metabolic derangement during exercise.

The general objective is study medical, socioeconomic, behavioral, health environmental, school and professional integration, and short- and medium- term quality of life determinants for all patients under 18 years old, residing in France for which the diagnosis of inherited metabolic diseases with specific regime (MHMRS) has been achieved during their childhood.

The general aim of this study is to establish a longitudinal cohort of older persons in order to examine the physiological, environmental and genetic risk factors for physical disability, frailty, cardiovascular disease, and neuropsychiatric disorders in older persons and to examine the benefit of healthy lifestyles. The findings from this study will provide information necessary for the development of effective health policy for aging people.

Objective: To identify how specific changes of the whole grain content in the diet affect the host-gut microbiome interactions with implications for metabolic health . Design: A randomized, controlled, single-blinded, cross-over intervention trial consisting of two 8-week intervention periods, separated by a 6-week wash-out period. A total of 60 participants will be included. Intervention: low vs. high whole grain intake.

The aim of this feasibility study is to test recruitment of participants into Phase 1 of the study and then the re-recruitment and retention of participants in Phase 2 of the study. The investigators will also be assessing the acceptability of recruitment strategy and data collection to participants. The effect of pre-pregnancy factors (biophysical, genetic, socioeconomic, behavioural and psychological) on obstetric, cardiovascular, socioeconomic, behavioural and psychological outcomes will all be examined.
