CYP2D6 Pharmacogenetics in Risperidone-Treated Children
Psychiatric DisordersNeurodevelopmental DisordersRisperidone is an important medication used to treat children with psychiatric illnesses or neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism. Despite excellent symptom control, the potential for side effects is worrisome. Treating these disorders is difficult because not everyone responds the same way to the same risperidone dose. One reason for this is genetic differences in how people break down the drug. Understanding these differences will help clinicians choose a dose and better predict the response so patients will be treated successfully with a lower risk for side effects. This study will research these genetic differences in children with psychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders. Hypothesis: The inter-patient variability in risperidone pharmacokinetics and exposure, adverse events, and clinical response in patients with psychiatric or neurodevelopmental disorders is associated with identifiable pharmacogenetic factors, such as CYP2D6 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).
Genetic Evaluation for Medication Selection (GEMS) Study
DementiaPsychiatric Disorders Mood1 moreInvestigators propose to determine whether knowing details about how a person's genes affect the way medicines work in the brain and body will help doctors pick more effective or safer medicine for that person. Target symptoms are restlessness, agitation, depression and related problems common in people with memory loss and dementia.
Role of Inflammation in Psychiatric Disorders in Patients With Cutaneous Lupus
Skin Restricted LupusPsychiatric DisordersThe purpose of this study is to determine the role of inflammation in the high prevalence of psychiatric disorders in skin-restricted lupus (SRL) patients. SRL is an inflammatory disease. Inflammation can lead to a decrease in the synthesis of neurotransmitters via the activation of the IDO enzyme and to induce the synthesis of neurotoxic molecules (kynurenin pathway). This leads to the development of psychiatric disorders. Investigator therefore want to compare inflammation and neurotransmitter synthesis in SRL patients according to the presence or absence of psychiatric disorders. Investigator expect a decrease in neurotransmitter synthesis and activation of the kynurenin pathway in patients with a psychiatric disorder.
Investigating Psychosocial Predictors & Employment Outcomes of Enhanced IPS Intervention
Psychiatric DisorderThe purpose of this cohort study, using an existing database, is to seek to describe the relationship between psychosocial factors (independent variables) and employment outcomes (dependent variables) in a population of people with complex mental health problems receiving evidence-based supported employment (EBSE) augmented with theory-driven occupational therapy interventions. The intention is to understand the predictive nature of psychosocial factors on the positive outcome of success in achieving paid employment. The Worker role interview (WRI) is routinely used in the research site; an National health Service (NHS) occupational therapy led vocational rehabilitation delivering EBSE service for people with complex mental health problems. An existing database of initial assessments and employment outcomes is available for investigation.
Animal Assisted Therapy in a Pediatric Setting
Developmental DelaysGlobal Developmental Delay6 moreThe primary purpose for this study is to determine if children who receive Occupational Therapy while they are an inpatient in the hospital will be more motivated to participate in therapy as well as increase the amount of time they will work during that particular session when a therapy dog is present during their sessions. The investigators will also be collecting data regarding a child's heart rate and blood pressure prior to the session starting and ending to determine if having a therapy dog present also helps relax a child.
Enhancement of Emotion Regulation Skills in Adolescents
Emotional ProblemBehavior ProblemFor the current study, a prevention program is developed and applied to enhance the emotion regulation skills of adolescents. Before and after the application of the prevention program, all participants will be assessed for their emotion regulation ability via questionnaires and a physiological examination in which heart rate and skin conductance will be measured.
Physical Activity Stress and Sleep in Adolescents
Adolescent Problem BehaviorAdolescence is characterized by major transitions in sleep and circadian rhythm. This rapid pivotal period increases the risks of sleep debt and poor sleep quality, leading to pronounced diurnal fatigue and drowsiness. On the other hand, academic stress has been also associated with increased sleep disturbances. Both academic stress and poor sleep in adolescents has been linked to increased sleepiness rate, reduced alertness, lower academic performances and the impairment of the control of energy balance through hyperphagia. Despite the importance of sleep in holistic development, physical (i.e. recovery, metabolism, muscle growth, weight control), cognitive (i.e. learning, memory, decision-making, Vigilance). Few studies have been designed to improve this behavior among college adolescents, especially in times of academic stress. Physical activity has been suggested as a non-pharmacological alternative treatment for sleep disorders . Generally, it is well established that the duration and quality of sleep were improved by regular physical activity among adolescents and far better, it was suggested that the exercise-mediated effect on sleep could be even observed in the short term. Moreover, it was suggested that aerobic exercise has positive effects on psychological stress and well-being of adolescents . Therefore, APADOSLEEP trial, was designed to examine the effect of physical activity program on sleep during and outside periods of academic stress.
Psychiatric Disturbances and COVID-19 Infection
Corona Virus InfectionThis observational study aims at Assessment of the prevalence and types Psychiatric disturbances that affects patients with COVID-19 infection with and without previous psychiatric diseases. in addition to, Assessment of the types of Psychiatric disturbances in patients with COVID-19 infection in correlation to age, disease severity, co-morbid conditions and treatments applied
Universal Preventive Resilience Intervention to Improve and Promote Mental Health for Teenagers...
Anxiety SymptomsDepressive Symptoms6 moreAdolescence is a period of many physical, mental, emotional, and social changes. It is also associated with risk behaviour conducts. Nonetheless, not all youths under disadvantage, adversity, or exposure to risk factors experience negative mental health outcomes. The concept of RESILIENCE provides one possible explanation for the ability of some individuals to maintain positive mental health. Resilience is thus the ability of an individual or community to adapt to life challenges or adversities while maintaining mental health and well-being. The increasing prevalence of mental disorders amongst children (around 10-20% of young people) makes positive mental health promotion in schools necessary through intervention programmes. UPRIGHT (Universal Preventive Resilience Intervention Globally implemented in schools to improve and promote mental Health for Teenagers) is a research and innovation project funded by the European Union´s Horizon 2020 programme (No. 754919). UPRIGHT general aim is to promote mental well-being and prevent mental disorders in youth by enhancing resilience capacities. It has been designed as a whole school approach addressing early adolescents, their families and the school community to finally create a real mental well-being culture at schools.
Mental Health Prevention Among Preschool Children Effectiveness Study
Mental HealthAggressive Childhood Behavior2 moreMental health in Chilean children and families is an urgent public health problem. Prevalence of psychiatric disorders among children between 4 and 11 years old is 27.8%, a higher percentage than was found in adolescents between 12 and 18 years old, which is 16.5%. The most frequent disorders in the population between 4 and 11 years old were disruptive disorders (20.6%), followed by anxiety disorders (9.2%). Mental health problems generate a high burden of disease on society in general; and there is an important treatment gap, especially among economically vulnerable populations. Prevention strategies appear to be the more recommendable options, mainly if these interventions can be implemented early in life and at low cost. Few preventive interventions aiming to increase resilience in the face of adversity, have been rigorously evaluated in Chile among preschoolers. There is substantial international evidence that shows that strengthening basic psychological skills, such as emotion regulation and social problem-solving, can reduce the incidence of mental pathology and improve various academic indicators. The curriculum of the Interpersonal Cognitive Problem Solving Program, also known as I Can Problem Solve (ICPS), is focused on the development of the cognitive process and children's social problem-solving skills. ICPS has been found to be effective in increasing pro-social behaviors and reducing aggressive behavior among preschoolers. No previous studies in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries have been conducted aiming to explore the acceptability and feasibility of ICPS to provide information to evaluate later the effectiveness of this intervention at a larger scale. The main objective of this study is the evaluation of the effectiveness of an adapted version of ICPS, in the national context at educational institutions with high socio-economic vulnerability, on increasing social-emotional competence and reducing emotional and behavioral problems in preschoolers.
