Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD) Assessment During Dual Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO) Lucentis...

Retinal Vein OcclusionPosterior Vitreous Detachment

This is a study of subjects with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) specifically looking at the difference in outcomes between patients with posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and those without PVD. Posterior vitreous detachment is a condition where the gel-like substance that occupies the space between the retina and the lens of the eye liquefies and separates from the retina. 20 subjects from Barnes Retina Institute will be enrolled in this study. Based on a pre-treatment ultrasound (a test utilizing high-frequency sound waves to look at the inside of the eye), high resolution OCT (a noninvasive procedure called optical coherence tomography to check the thickness of your retina) and clinical exam, subjects will be assigned to one of 2 groups at baseline: Group 1 will be those with PVD and Group 2 will be those without PVD. Then subjects will receive monthly intravitreal (inside the eye) injections of Ranibizumab.

Preoperative Injection of Bevacizumab Prior to Vitreoretinal Surgery in Diabetic Tractional Retinal...

Intravitreal Bevacizumab InjectionPars Plana Vitrectomy2 more

Vitreoretinal surgery for epiretinal proliferation tractional retinal detachment associated with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is often complicated by hemorrhage from fibrovascular tissue. To control the bleeding during tissue dissection multiple measures and techniques are used. Bevacizumab is an anti VEGF antibody which has been used to induce regression of ocular neovascularization. Its intraocular injection has been increasingly used for treatment of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) associated with age related macular degeneration (AMD) with fairly good success. Also it has been shown to be effective for treatment of PDR complicated with vitreous hemorrhage and iris neovascularization. We hypothesized that if anti-angiogenic agents, such as bevacizumab are injected into the vitreous cavity before vitrectomy in cases of PDR; there may be partial regression of neovascularization resulting in less intraoperative (and postoperative) hemorrhage. This can make the operation easier and shorter and lessen the need for intraocular cautery.. In this study diabetic patients who are candidated for vitrectomy with similar complexity scores will be randomized to preoperative injection or no injection of 2.5 mg Bevacizumab .In the injection group, 2.5 mg of bevacizumab (0.1 ml of commercially available Avastin vial, Genentech, inc. South San Francisco, CA) will be injected into the vitreous 3-5 days before operation. During each operation, the number of endodiathermy applications, backflush needle applications and the duration of surgery will be recorded by an independent observer. Also, type of tamponade, post operation vitreous hemorrhage and 3 months postoperative visual acuities wil be recorded. all these parameters will be compared in two groups.

Oxygen Dissociation Curve in Patients Undergoing Orthotopic Liver Transplantation

Liver Transplantation

Hemoglobin (Hb) is the molecule responsible for the transport of oxygen (O2) to the tissues in mammals. The p50 and the Hill coefficient (HC) best describe the ODC. The interaction between Hb and O2 can be influenced by many agents and conditions like temperature, pH, pCO2 and 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG). During liver transplantation numerous profound physiological changes occur, linked to the different stages of the surgical procedure. Previous studies in humans and animals undergoing liver transplantation have shown that while the ODC seems preserved during preparation and the anhepatic phase, a left shift of the ODC occurs after reperfusion . This left shift of the ODC could imply a decreased release of oxygen to the tissues, probably worsening hemodynamic instability. With this pilot study the investigator aim to measure ODCs at baseline and at different stages during orthotopic liver transplantation in patients in order to get deeper understanding of oxygen delivery and supply during liver transplantation surgery.

Retinal Pigment Epithelial Detachment Secondary to Age-related Macular Degeneration

Primary Objectives: To assess the efficacy of intravitreal administered Eylea in preventing visual loss in subjects with a retinal pigment epithelial detachment (PED) subtype of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD) measured by mean change in BCVA at Month 12 compared to Baseline. Secondary Objectives: To assess the safety and tolerability of repeated intravitreal administration of Eylea in subjects with the PED subtype of neovascular AMD for a period of 1 year To assess the effect of repeated intravitreal administration of Eylea on Central Subfield Thickness (CSFT), Central Subfield Volume (CSFV), and PED height and volume. To assess the effect of repeated intravitreal administration of Eylea on vision related quality of life in subjects with PED study type of neovascular AMD assessed using the NEI/VFQ-25 questionnaire

Effects of Macular Buckle Versus Vitrectomy on Macular Schisis and Macular Detachment in Highly...

RetinoschisisMacular Detachment1 more

Macular schisis associated with macular detachment is a one of the complications of high myopia. There is controversy in the primary treatment for this situation. This study will compare the effects of macular buckling + gas injection versus vitrectomy + internal limiting membrane peeling + gas tamponade in a cohort of highly myopic eyes with macular retinal detachment associated with macular schisis.

Electromyographic Responses by Static Stretching and Neural Mobilization

Electromechanical Dissociation

The objective of this experimental study was to compare the electromyographic responses of sedentary youth with and without the administration of static stretching and neural mobilization. The sample was composed of sedentary students, divided, randomly, into neural mobilization practitioners (NMG; n=15; age=22±3 years), static stretching practitioners (SSG; n=15; age=23±4 years) and a control group (CG; n=15; age: 24±4 years). For this evaluation, an electromyograph (EMG; a four channel system) was used to monitor electrical activity in the femoral bicep muscles). In neural mobilization, hip flexion was conducted passively with the knee extended, and 30 plantar-to-dorsal flexion oscillations were completed per minute. For the static stretching, hip flexion with was completed passively with the knee extended and held for 6 seconds. The perception of effort was evaluated using the Perceived Force in Flexibility Scale. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Descriptive statistics such as the average, standard deviation, median, standard error and absolute change within groups (post-test - pretest) were calculated. The sample normality was evaluated using the Shapiro-Wilk test. For the response variable analysis, the paired Student's t-test (paired) or Wilcoxon test (nonparametric) was used for intragroup analysis. For the intergroup analysis, the multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used, followed by the Tukey Post-Hoc test. A p<0.05 significance level was adopted for the statistical evaluations. Microsoft Excel and the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 14.0 were used for evaluation of the results.
