Prior Abdominal Surgery: A Potential Risk Factor for Colonic Diverticulosis or Diverticulitis

DiverticulosisColonic2 more

Background & Aims: Abnormal colonic pressure profiles have been associated with an increased risk of colonic diverticulosis. A surgical history is a known risk factor for abdominal adhesions, and these may lead to increased intraluminal colonic pressure. We assessed whether previous abdominal surgery is associated with colonic diverticulosis or diverticulitis. Methods: The investigators analyzed data from a prospective study of patients undergoing colonoscopy for different indications from 2020 through 2021. Patients completed a structured questionnaire concerning previous abdominal surgeries, dietary and lifestyle exposures including smoking and alcohol use, and co-morbidities.

DEBUT: Diverticulitis Evaluation of Patient Burden, Utilization, and Trajectory

Diverticulitis

Half of all Americans over 60 years of age have diverticulitis of the colon. Over the last decade, the use of elective colon resection has increased by more than 50%, and diverticulitis is now the leading reason for elective colectomy. Surgeons and patients alike have a difficult time deciding if surgery is the best choice to treat diverticulitis. The goal of the DEBUT study is to improve the understanding about how doctors and patients make decisions to have elective surgery for diverticulitis, and the global impact of diverticulitis on patients' lives.

Intraoperative Testing of Colorectal Anastomosis - Air or Water (Methylene Blue)?

ColoRectal CancerColonic Diverticulitis3 more

A leak from a colorectal anastomosis is a post-operative complication surgeons fear the most, following colonic resection. Over the years, there have been multiple suggestions for intraoperative tests for the integrity of the colorectal anastomosis. Two of the most common tests that are performed routinely are: Air tight leak test - filling the pelvis with saline and insufflating air trans anal - looking for air bubbles in the saline filled pelvis. Injecting diluted dye (methylene blue) trans anal, and looking for blue dye stains on gauze pads covering the outer side of anastomosis. The aim of the study is to compare the two methods, and to assess if there is a superior method. A secondary aim is to establish standards to perform the test, mainly to assess the appropriate pressure to apply on the anastomosis. In this prospective study patients scheduled to undergo colonic resection of their distal part of the colon/ rectum with colorectal anastomosis, will have both testing methods performed sequentially and will be followed post-operative to assess the yield and sensitivity of the testing methods.

Evaluation of Laparoscopic Peritoneal Lavage for Perforated Diverticulitis: A National Registry...

Diverticular Disease of ColonDiverticulitis4 more

The goal of this observational study is to study the emergency surgical treatment of diverticular disease in Sweden outside clinical trials. The main questions it aims to answer are: Which is the preferred surgical method of acute diverticular disease in Sweden? Which are the short and long-term outcomes of the different surgical methods? Researchers will compare the different methods to see if there is a surgical operation that is superior for the treatment of acute diverticulitis.

Incidence and Predictive Factor of Irritable Bowel Syndrome After Acute Diverticulitis in Korea...

Diverticulitis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is considered immune reaction of gastrointestinal tract. Therefore there is growing evidence that IBS could occur after gastroenteritis. However, little is known about the incidence of IBS after acute diverticulitis. We thought that post diverticulitis status could induce IBS because diverticulitis was also bowel inflammatory disorder. This survey was designed to identify incidence of post-diverticulitis IBS and risk factor in Korea.

The Out-patient, Non Antibiotic Management of Patients With Acute Uncomplicated Colonic Diverticulitis...

Colonic Diverticulitis

Previous multicentre study NCT 01008488 indicates that a patient with CT-proven uncomplicated diverticulitis has a very low risk (1.4%) of developing severe complications such as perforations or abscesses. The question is whether or not hospitalization is necessary, and if patients in that case could return home without antibiotics. The purpose of this study is to evaluate if out-patients managements in uncomplicated colonic diverticulitis is possible without readmission or complications.

Validation of Actigraph Measured Sleep During Acute Diverticulitis

Acute Diverticulitis

The purpose of this study is to investigate the accuracy of actigraph measured sleep compared to the golden standard (polysomnography) during Acute uncomplicated diverticulitis. Our hypothesis is the actigraph is accurate for sleep-monitoring for this group of patients
