Accuracy of a Diagnostic Algorithm for the Differential Diagnosis of Vertigo in the ED: the STANDING....

VertigoUnsteadiness

This study evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a simplified clinical algorithm (STANDING) for the differential diagnosis of acute vertigo in the emergency department. In particular, the investigators want to analyze the sensitivity and specificity of the test for the diagnosis of vertigo of central origin and the reproducibility of the test. In suspected central vertigo of ischemic origin, a duplex sonography to identify vertebral artery pathology will be performed.

Vestibular Evaluation After Vestibular Schwannoma Treatment

Dizziness

Vestibular schwannoma is a benign tumor located on the vestibular nerve. Patient could present dizziness symptoms cause to the tumor, and at least after the treatment by gamaknife radiosurgery or microsurgery resection. Only few studies keep the interest about dizziness symptoms and treatment modality in vestibular schwannoma. In the study dizziness symptoms were compared before and after the treatment of vestibular schwannoma by radiosurgery gammaknife or microsurgery resection. 2 scales were used : dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) and dizziness functionnal scale (AAO).

VertigoCarotid Artery Diseases

This study will be carried out prospectively on patients who applied to the cardiovascular surgery polyclinic and the carotid-vertebral artery doppler ultrasound due to the vascular problem. All patients will fill "Balance Disorder Scan Survey" and "Vertigo-Dizziness Imbalance Questionnaire-SS". The Cardiac Autonomic Control System Response to Vestibular Stimulation in Subjects With and Without...

Benign Paroxysmal Positional VertigoVertigo1 more

The vestibular system in the inner year is an important system in the body which is responsible for balance. In addition, there is evidence that the vestibular system plays a role in maintaining blood pressure while changing body position, such as moving from lying down in bed to sitting. Dysfunction of the vestibular system may affect the ability to maintain blood pressure, therefore the aim of this study is to assess if a specific problem in the vestibular system (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo- BPPV) may cause changes in the interaction between the vestibular system and the cardiovascular system. We assume that patients with this medical condition (BPPV) will have different heart rate parameters in comparison with healthy patients.

Risk Factors for Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness Development

Dizziness

The primary aim of this study is to determine whether the prevalence of neuroticism, anxiety and body vigilance is higher in patients diagnosed with PPPD compared to those who suffered a vestibular insult but did not develop PPPD and healthy controls. An increased prevalence of one or more of these factors may identify them as risk factors in the development of PPPD. The secondary aim is to understand how PPPD affects quality of life.

How do Individuals Respond to a Diagnosis of 3PD

Persistent Postural Perceptual DizzinessVestibular Disease1 more

No studies have explored how patients with chronic dizziness react to a diagnosis of Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (3PD) and their beliefs and representations of the diagnostic label. Investigating the experience of diagnostic labelling from the perspective of patients will allow clinicians to recognise whether this is a helpful term to adopt and ways to improve the clinical consultation. This is a qualitative study that will consist of semi-structured interviews with people with a new diagnosis of 3PD. The main objective of the study is to explore how patients react to this diagnostic label, what they understand about their diagnosis and how their own meanings affect their expectations and illness perceptions. Between 12-15 patients will be recruited from the balance clinic at Guy's Hospital, London, UK. The qualitative data will be analysed using thematic analysis which will draw on pragmatic interpretive descriptive methodology.
