Second Young Adult Naturalistic Alcohol Study

Young Adult Alcohol Drinking

This study involves completion of questionnaires, computer-based cognitive tasks and an alcohol drinking session. Participation in this study consists of an initial, in-person screening appointment, 4 brief daily appointments at the research office, an alcohol drinking session at a local bar and a follow-up appointment 1-3 days after the alcohol drinking session. Participants who are found to be eligible in the screening phase will then complete a daily appointment for 4 days out of a 5-day period (i.e., there will be 1 day out of the 5 on which they will not attend an appointment). Each appointment will last 20 minutes, on average and consist of a questionnaire and computer-based cognitive task. On the day of the fourth appointment, participants will complete an alcohol drinking session. The alcohol drinking session begins at 4pm and lasts until at least midnight. Participants in this study will be young adults between the ages of 21-25, who regularly drink alcohol and are not currently seeking treatment for alcohol use. Seventy-two participants will complete this study.

Study of Mechanisms of Emotion Regulation in Alcohol-abstinent Patients

Alcohol Use Disorder

Background: Difficulties in assigning and identifying emotional states, or to regulate the emotional costs are recognized as one of the major factors of relapse. This study aimed to evaluate the emotion regulation processes, in short term (STA, after 1month of withdrawal) and long-term alcohol abstinent individuals (LTA, at least six months of abstinence), compared to healthy control participants (C) in a positive and negative emotion induction protocol. Main aim: Evaluating the emotional regulation deficits assessed with physiological indicators (heart rate variability, electrodermal response, pupil diameter) and clinically in presentations of visual stimuli to emotional value (positive, negative, neutral) in alcohol use disorder's (AUD) patients with short and long term abstinent compared to a control group of healthy subjects. The investigators are particularly interested in the evolution of heart rate variability considered as a good marker of vulnerability to AUD. Secondary objectives: Studying the relationships between physiological measures and clinical variables such as behavioral indicators and self-reported assessment of cognitive and emotional skills among the three groups (STA, LTA and C).

Primary Care Validation in French of a Single-question Screening Test for Unhealthy Alcohol Use....

Unhealthy Alcohol Use

Unhealthy alcohol use (UAU) is a very important public health concern. In France UAU is the second cause of avoidable death after tobacco smoking. In 2014, 31% of the French adult population presented with unhealthy alcohol use. Primary care practitioners have access to validated questionnaires in French such as the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT) and the Fast Alcohol Consumption Evaluation (FACE). These tests are not often used because of their length. In 2009 a study by Smith et al in the USA compared a single question with the AUDIT-c (a short version of the AUDIT). The single question was "How many times in the past year have you had X or more drinks in a day?" Where X is 7 for men and 6 for women. This study found that the single question had a comparable sensitivity and a specificity, respectively 81,8% and 79,3%. The aim of the study is to validate this question in French. First the question has been translated from English to French following the WHO method. The aim of the present study is to validate the French translation by comparing it with the AUDIT and the FACE. A questionnaire will be given to patients with inclusion criteria in general practitioners waiting rooms (15 different locations). This questionnaire will be composed of the single question, followed by the AUDIT and FACE, and three socio-demographic questions. The questionnaire will be anonymous.

Assessment of Smoking, Vaping, and Alcohol Consumption Behavior

SurveyE-Cig Use4 more

To assess smoking, vaping, and alcohol consumption behaviors via online surveys in the population. Further, the objective is to administer additional surveys to assess which methods (e.g., pen-and-paper records, a smartphone app) for monitoring smoking, vaping, alcohol intake, and food intake are preferred by the study population.

Alcohol Consumption and Circulating Metabolites

No ConditionFocus: Metabolites of Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol consumption is a risk factor for numerous health conditions and an important cause of death. Identifying metabolites associated with alcohol consumption may provide insights into the metabolic pathways through which alcohol may affect human health. The objective of this study is to investigate associations of alcohol consumption with circulating concentrations of 123 metabolites including amino acids, acylcarnitines, hexoses, biogenic amines, phosphatidylcholines, and sphingomyelins. For this purpose, the investigators use data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study and applied a discovery and replication approach.
