TA-8995: Its Use in Patients With Mild Dyslipidaemia (TULIP)
DyslipidemiaThe primary objective of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of different doses of TA-8995, a cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) inhibitor, on the elevation of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), alone and in combination with statin therapy. The secondary objectives of this study are to determine the safety and tolerability of TA-8995 in patients with mild dyslipidaemia.

Metabolic SyndromeDyslipidemia4 moreThe purpose of this study is to investigate if daily consumption of barley beta-glucans effect lipid and glucose metabolism and alter intestinal microbiota composition in participants with metabolic syndrome or with high risk for metabolic syndrome development. It is assumed that 4-week intervention with beta-glucans will improve some clinical signs of metabolic syndrome and alter composition of intestinal microbiota. Variation in microbiota composition will be investigated with emphasis on Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes ratio. Furthermore it is presupposed that consumption of beta-glucans will stimulate growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria from genus Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria and consequently effect production of short chain fatty acids in population with metabolic syndrome. Moreover it is presupposed that 4-week consumption of beta-glucans will have influence on glucose metabolism and will consequently improve insulin resistance within people with metabolic syndrome or high risk for metabolic syndrome development. It is assumed that 4-week consumption of beta-glucans will improve specific plasma lipid content in population with metabolic syndrome.

Spinal Cord InjuryDyslipidemiaCardiovascular disease-related morbidity in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs earlier in life, at a greater prevalence than that of the general population, and is the primary cause of death after the first year of injury. During the chronic phase of SCI, a characteristic dyslipidemia emerges, which is characterized by low serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations, with values often qualifying to be an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease, and elevations in serum triglycerides (TG). Serum low density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations in those with SCI are usually similar to those of the general population. The current proposal in persons with SCI aims to determine the safety and efficacy of short-term fenofibrate treatment, an anti-lipid medication whose primary action lowers serum TG and raises serum HDL-C levels.

The studies goal is to establish the role of genetic variation and development in key transporters on the dose-exposure relationship of two commonly used statin drugs in children. This study is the first step in a series of investigations aimed to determining the mechanisms behind variations in physiologic response, clinical efficacy and significant adverse effect risk that surround the statin drugs in children and adolescents.
