Effect of Adding Folic Acid on Lipid Parameters in Population With Dyslipidemias
DyslipidemiasBackground: Homocysteinemia is associated with increased risk of stroke, dyslipidemias, dementia, peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease. folic acid is involved in the metabolism of homocysteine. Folic acid supplementation helps to reduce homocysteine levels and lowering of homocysteine may cause improvement in serum lipid profile. In this study we will assess the effect of folic acid supplementation for 6 weeks, on lipid parameter in patients who have dyslipidemia. Methods: It is a placebo controlled randomized trial, consisting of two groups, Group A (n=34) and Group B (n=34). Group A (intervention group) will be given Folic acid supplements and the second group will be given a placebo. After 6 weeks changes in lipid parameters, will be measured in both groups. Discussion: Folic acid is water soluble vitamin also known as vitamin B-9. Folic acid works as co-factor in many biochemical enzymatic reactions. Homocysteine metabolism also requires folic acid, homocysteinemia may worsen renal function, lipid parameter, accelerate atherosclerosis, angiopathies, and progression of dementia, also increase the risk of stroke and coronary artery disease. In this study, Group A (treatment Group) will be given folic acid supplementation while the Group B (Placebo Group) will be given placebo and at the end of 6 weeks, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides and serum cholesterol levels will be measured and compared with the pre-treatment levels. If Post-treatment group shows significant decrease in serum LDL, total cholesterol, triglycerides and increase in HDL then Folic acid supplementation may be routinely recommended for patient with dyslipidemias.
Clinical Trial to Evaluate the Efficacy of a Dyslipidemic Therapy in Mexican Population
DyslipidemiasCardiovascular Risk FactorClinical Trial Phase III, experimental, simple blind, randomized with two treatment groups, multicentric, longitudinal, to evaluate the therapuetic efficacy to dislipydemias in mexican adult population. This trial includes homogeneus populations that could be comparable by their disease condition, biologic characteristics and sociodemographics characteristics. 2 Treatment groups: Experimental Group: Oral Administration of L-carnitine (1g) + Oral Atorvastatin (20mg), every 24 hours for 6 months. Active control group: Oral Administration of Atorvastatin 20mg every 24 hours for 6 months. Sample Size: 120 subjects, females or males between 35 to 75 years old. Laboratory tests: Hematic biometry, quimical blood components, electrocardiogram and pregnancy urinary test.
Red Rice Yeast in Low-density Lipoprotein (LDL) Lowering: an Efficacy Study
DyslipidemiasLDL HyperlipoproteinemiaRed yeast rice is a source of active compounds in reducing LDL levels with practically no side effects. Molval Fort is a natural product available in the Lebanese market with a combination of red yeast rice extracts, EPA/DHA and coenzyme Q10. The investigators are conducting this study to explore the effect of red yest rice extracts based product on LDL and its side effects in a sample of primary care Lebanese patients.

Type 2 DiabetesDyslipidemiaThe aim of the present study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Jinlida granules in patients with inadequately controlled type-2 diabetes and dyslipidemia under life style intervention.
Thyroxin Treatment in Sub Clinical Hypothyroidism, on the Apnea Hypopnea Index Score, Lipids and...
DyslipidemiaObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and hypothyroidism are both commonly found in clinical practice, and share a number of symptoms and clinical features. It has been shown that hypothyroid subjects are at high risk of developing sleep disorder breathing and OSA, and adequate thyroxine treatment may reduce the sleep disordered breathing.. However, the time-course and effect of treating subclinical hypothyroidism in OSA patients on the respiratory events during sleep is not known. Subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). Dyslipidemia is a known complications of subclinical hypothyroidism and the effect of thyroxine treatment on lipid profile is controversial . Some reports suggested higher serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), than healthy subjects; however, the effect of levothyroxine is controversial. This project will help us to know if the treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism will improve the symptoms and reduce the progression of OSA, which may improve patients' quality of life by reducing the complication of OSA (hypertension, , depression, Cardiovascular diseases, etc.) or may even reduce mortality. It will help us to know the effect of subclinical hypothyroidism treatment on of lipid profiles and hs-CRP.
Cardiovascular Effects of Salvia Miltiorrhiza Extract (Danshen)
DyslipidemiasHypertension3 moreRationale: Extracts of the plant Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) have been used as traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as angina pectoris and myocardial infarction. Several preclinical studies point towards promising effects of Danshen on risk factors of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, such as hyperlipidemia and hypertension. Objective: Our primary objective is to determine the effect of Salvia miltiorrhiza extract (Danshen) on hyperlipidemia. Secondary objective is to investigate the effect of Danshen on hypertension. Further objectives are to determine its effect on endothelial function, oxidative stress, inflammation, hemostasis and hemorheology, and on insulin sensitivity.
Effects of Nicotinic Acid Plus Simvastatin Versus Simvastatin Alone on Carotid and Femoral Intima-Media...
DyslipidemiaAtherosclerosisDyslipidaemia is characterized by low plasma levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), elevated triglycerides and an increase in low density lipoprotein (LDL-c) particles, and has been unequivocally established as a most important cardiovascular risk factor. While statins are effective in reducing plasma levels of LDL-c, these drugs have only modest effects on raising HDL-c (typically by less than 10%), even with aggressive statin therapy. However, increasing evidence suggests that low HDL-c might be at least as relevant as high LDL-c in promoting the development and progression of atherosclerosis. The beneficial effect of raising HDL-c on clinical outcome has already been demonstrated by several studies. Nicotinic acid is the most potent agent available for raising plasma levels of HDL-c by up to 29% at clinically recommended doses, and substantially lowers triglycerides and LDL-c. Furthermore, nicotinic acid is also the most potent lipid lowering agent available that reduces Lp(a), an independent marker of cardiovascular risk. In a recent study patients with coronary artery disease had a 21% increase in HDL-c and a 13% decrease in triglycerides, and these beneficial effects on lipid status may have contributed to a stabilization or regression of carotid intima-media-thickness (IMT).The impact in patients with advanced atherosclerosis like peripheral artery disease (PAD) in unknown. The investigators hypothesized that nicotinic acid in addition to statin therapy may inhibit progression of peripheral arterial atherosclerosis. Therefore, the aim of the present randomized controlled trial is to investigate the effects of nicotinic acid (daily dose starting with 500 mg, up to 2000mg) in addition to simvastatin (40 mg daily) versus simvastatin (40mg daily) monotherapy in patients with low serum HDL-C levels and PAD with respect to changes of carotid and femoral IMT, changes of patients´ lipid status and occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
