Efficacy and Safety of Lacidofil® STRONG as an Adjuvant for Helicobacter Pylori Treatment in Non-ulcer...

Helicobacter Pylori Infection

Treatment for H. pylori eradication includes antibiotics. The treatment has decreased its efficiency (lower capability to eradicate the infection) due to increasing antibiotic resistance in the population. But the addition of probiotics to the treatment has been observed to increase efficiency, and decreasing the antibiotics' side effects. We set to evaluate whether Lacidofil® STRONG improves efficacy when added to the standard therapy to eradicate H. pylori.

Functional Dyspepsia: Validation of a Questionnaire for Symptom Assessment in FD PDS Subgroup

Functional DyspepsiaPostprandial Fullness Syndrome

Fuctional dyspepsia is defined as the presence of symptoms thought to originate from the gastroduodenum, in the absence of any structural or metabolic disease that is likely to explain these symptoms. To facilitate its diagnostic and therapeutic approach, the Rome consensus proposed to distinguish 2 subgroups: postprandial distress syndrome (PDS), is characterized by meal-related symptoms such as early satiation and postprandial fullness. At present, no validated instrument is available for the assessment of the symptom responsiveness in patients suffering from PDS. To develop a new PRO questionnaire, we have previously conducted focus group sessions and cognitive interviews in PDS patients to identify all relevant symptom items that characterize PDS. In this study we aim to validate the provisional Leuven Postprandial Distress Scale (LPDS) through the assessment of its consistency, reliability and ability to detect change in the framework of a controlled treatment trial.

Gastrointestinal Sensorimotor Dysfunctions in Diabetes Mellitus

DyspepsiaDiabetes Mellitus With Gastrointestinal Symptoms

The purpose of this study is to understand why people with indigestion have gastrointestinal symptoms and in particular to understand whether symptoms are related to increased sensitivity to nutrients in the small intestine and to a hormone (GLP1) which is normally released from the small intestine in response to nutrients. We propose to study the contribution of GLP1 to intestinal sensitivity with a drug (exendin 9-39) that blocks the effects of GLP1.

Functional Dyspepsia: Validation of the Leuven Postprandial Distress Scale (LPDS) in a Placebo-controlled...

Functional Dyspepsia

No instrument is available for the assessment of the symptoms in patients suffering from functional dyspepsia - postprandial distress syndrome patients - PDS. Indeed PDS is an unmet clinical need in drug development. To do so, the development of suitable endpoints for its efficacy evaluation is indicated. After interviews of patients suffering from PDS (Focus groups) and identification of the emerging symptoms a draft version of the Leuven Postprandial Distress Scale (LPDS) questionnaire has been designed. This study will assess the reliability of the scoring rule, the construct validity and ability to detect change of the draft LPDS. A minimum of 100 PDS patients will be randomised in two arms receiving respectively either Itopride 100 mg tid or Placebo tid during 8 weeks. Patients of both arms will be tested with LPDS using daily diary cards and by anchor questionnaires (PAGI-SYM, OSS, OTE) at baseline and during the study drug administration period.

Clinical Improvement and in Quality of Life-Functional Dyspepsia-

Psychogenic Dyspepsia

Functional dyspepsia (FD)is defined as the presence of symptoms thought to originate in the gastroduodenal region with no evidence of structural disease that is likely to explain the symptoms. The cause of this condition is unclear, not being a recognized treatment for it. The conventional treatments for those patients are symptom based. Unfortunately, these medications are not very effective. Patients with FD report poorer health status, mental health, and social functioning than patients with structural gastrointestinal pathology. Our aim is to compare a combined intervention (medical plus psychological intervention) versus conventional intervention (medical intervention)in regard to the health related quality of life, symptomatology, anxiety and depression of those patients. The investigators hypothesized that compared with conventional intervention a combined intervention would yield significantly better short (after treatment) and medium term (six months after treatment) improvement of health related quality of life and symptoms.

Sourdough Bakery Products and Digestive Function

Dyspepsia

In a double-blind, randomised crossover study, two sourdough croissants (SC) or two brewer's yeast croissants (BC) were served to 17 (9 F; Age range 18-40; BMI range 18-24 kg/m2) healthy subjects to evaluate the effects of their ingestion on postprandial gastrointestinal functions. Hydrogen breath test was performed to measure H2 production after SC and BC ingestion. Gastric volume was evaluated by Magnetic Resonance(MR) Imaging to calculate gastric emptying rate in the 3-hour interval following croissant ingestion. Palatability and postprandial gastrointestinal symptoms and perceptions over a 4-h period after the meal were evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS). In addition, in the 3-hour interval, blood samples were drawn to measure serum glucose levels. The area under the curve (AUC) was employed to evaluate global kinetics of all parameters and the T-test was used to evaluate differences between groups.

A Two Week Nitazoxanidebased Quadruple Regimen

Dyspepsia

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a global health problem as it is associated with peptic ulcers, chronic gastritis, duodenitis, and stomach cancer. Therefore, the eradication of the pathogen is of critical importance to reduce H. pylori-related complications . However, due to increasing antibiotic resistance, eradication of Helicobacter pylori has become more challenging. With a great decline in the eradication rate of standard triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori to below 70% in many countries. Treatment with triple therapy, which is the most frequently recommended, fails to eradicate H. pylori in approximately 20% of cases .
