Main objective is to assess effectiveness of neuromuscular electroestimulation (NMES) in combination with respiratory muscle training (RMT) in the treatment of oropharyngeal dysphagia in subacute stroke patients.

The Effect of High Frequency rTMS on Advancing Parkinson's Disease With Dysphagia

Advanced Parkinson's With Dysphagia

This study aims to assess the therapeutic role of rTMS on parkinson's patients with dysphagia. Thirty PD patients with dysphagia using UK bank criteria for PD will recruited from outpatient clinic in Assuit University. All patients were admitted at Neuropsychiatric Department, Assiut University Hospital/ Assiut, Egypt. Each patient fulfilled the inclusion criteria as spontaneous swallows should be identified clearly when patients cannot perform voluntary swallows using clinical examination test. The patients will be allocated randomly into two groups one of which will receive real sessions of high frequency rTMS (25 HZ), with intensity of 80% of resting motor threshold detected from the hand motor area, with total 2000 pulses for each hemisphere for 10 consecutive sessions totally over period of 10 days with repeated booster session every month during the period of follow up among three months. The other will receive sham sessions. All subjects will be followed up by selected clinical rating scales at different intervals pre session, post 10 sessions, and after one, two and three months.

Evaluating Dysphagia in Neonates With CHD

The overall goal of this study is to describe the oral motor skills of neonates born with congenital heart defects, both before and after cardiac surgery, and to evaluate current measures of feeding motor skills and feeding readiness in this population using the Neonatal Oral Motor Assessment Scale (NOMAS) and the Infant Driven Feeding Scale. The specific aims are to: Describe the oral motor skills of infants with CHD before surgery as compared with normal full-term newborn (>37 weeks) using the NOMAS Describe the oral motor skills of infants with CHD after surgery as compared with those same infants before surgery using the NOMAS. Determine if the current Infant Driven Feeding Readiness Scale appropriately identifies which children with CHD are ready for oral feeding. (A. Feeding Readiness Scale, B. Quality of Nippling Scale at the 1st post- operative feeding evaluation) Describe the unique characteristics of oral motor skills in infants with CHD (ie. Wide jaw excursions, poor latch, etc.) Our hypothesis is that infants with CHD will have dysfunctional sucking patterns before surgical repair as compared to normal newborns. This dysfunctional sucking pattern in infants with CHD will have worsened post-surgery as compared to pre-surgery. In addition, the Infant Driven Feeding Scale will be utilized to predict that many infants with CHD will not be ready for oral feedings, however most of those patients will go on to successfully take oral feedings.

Post Critical Illness Dysphagia in the Intensive Care Unit

The aims of the study are to determine: 1) the prevalence of ICU acquired dysphagia, 2) identify risk factors for ICU Acquired dysphagia, and 3) consequences of ICU acquired dysphagia including: ICU mortality, hospital mortality, days of mechanical ventilation, ICU length of stay, hospital length of stay, post extubation aspiration pneumonia, and rate of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy placed feeding tube (PEG-Tube) insertion, and/or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and/or Dobhoff feeds.
