SLeeP AID4 is a single-group, single-arm, Canada-wide, non-randomised, unblinded, in-home, observational study to prospectively collect and build a data set of natural sleep behaviour and physiology in maternal-fetal dyads (and bed partners, if applicable) in the third trimester of pregnancy in the home setting and subsequently investigate the feasibility of using computer vision technology (CVT) to monitor sleep during and across the third trimester of pregnancy in the home setting for research purposes by eliciting participants' attitudes toward CVT and training, validating, and testing a CVT model to accurately, unobtrusively, non-invasively, and objectively detect and quantify various sleep behaviours, disturbances, and disorders.

Assessment of a Behavioral Sleep Program in a Population With Sleep Disturbances

Sleep disturbances are considered a significant public health concern. The prevalence of disrupted sleep among US adults has increased to alarming levels. Around 70 million Americans suffer from a sleep disturbance. Reduced sleep and poor sleep quality have been linked to cardiovascular disease, increased risk for obesity, hypertension, heart attack, and stroke. Sleep disturbances are characterized by dissatisfaction with sleep quality or sleep quantity, which may be associated with difficulties initiating sleep, difficulties maintaining sleep, or early-morning awakenings with an inability to return to sleep. Sleep disturbances including insomnia can be treated with pharmacological treatments. However, individuals often report adverse side effects. Increasing attention has therefore been paid to behavioral and psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness. The study will assess a smartphone-based sleep program by Headspace Health that combines cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi) and mindfulness concepts to minimize nocturnal symptoms and waking consequences associated with sleep disturbances. The study aims to test the effectiveness of the Headspace Health Sleep Program on self-reported outcomes related to sleep quality. A secondary aim is to test objective measures of sleep quality using actigraphy. The Headspace Health Sleep Program is an 18 day program based on CBTi, which includes the following intervention components: 1) a sleep diary to monitor sleep and associated factors; 2) cognitive interventions to address maladaptive thoughts related to sleep; 3) behavioral interventions to address maladaptive behaviors related to sleep (e.g., sleep hygiene, stimulus control, and sleep restriction); 4) de-arousal techniques (e.g., mindfulness, breathing, and muscle relaxation exercises).

Exploration of Relationships Between Sleep, Gut Health and Cognition

Our study aims to build on emerging evidence showing relationships between gut health, sleep and brain functions. To achieve this, our study aims to test the feasibility of using non-pharmacological interventions: a psychoeducation-based intervention (enhanced sleep education - ESE) and a dietary supplement (Saffron extract), to improve sleep in older adults with insomnia complaints. Our study also aims to test the feasibility of using wearable and commercially available EEG headband technology to measure objective sleep quality in the home, which will allow for a reliable and ecologically more valid sleep research.

This is a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) to gain preliminary evidence regarding the acceptability, tolerability, safety, and efficacy of a combined intervention of Stellate Ganglion Blockade (SGB) and psychoeducation on trauma symptoms and health behaviors in patients exhibiting early PTSD symptoms after cardiac arrest (CA). Primary Aim 1 (Feasibility outcomes): Gain preliminary evidence regarding the acceptability, tolerability, and safety of conducting a randomized trial that evaluates a single SGB treatment in conjunction with psychoeducation among CA patients with early PTSD symptoms. Secondary Aim 1 (Treatment-related outcomes): Test, whether SGB/psychoeducation treatment in CA patients with clinically significant PTSD symptoms is associated with reduced cardiac anxiety, PTSD symptoms, and improved health behaviors (physical activity and sleep duration), assessed objectively by a wrist-worn accelerometer for 4 weeks post-discharge.
