To Evaluate the Incidence of Acute Otitis Media in Children in Five East European Countries
InfectionsStreptococcalThe aim of this study is to provide baseline acute otitis media data in East European countries.
Does Tympanometry Predict Antibiotic Usage in Acute Otitis Media?
Acute Otitis MediaDue to recent efforts to decrease antibiotic overuse, and reports of high rates of spontaneous resolution for clinically diagnosed Acute Otitis Media(AOM), most physicians now wait 48-72 hours before starting antibiotics for common ear infections. The investigators are interested to see if those patients with documented middle ear effusions, as determined by tympanometry, have higher rates of eventual antibiotic usage than those with normal tympanometry results. If there is a significant disparity between those with a positive tympanogram and those without the investigators may be able to identify a group that will benefit from antibiotics and a group that would not need treatment.
Genetics of Middle Ear Disease
Otitis MediaThe goal of this study is to identify the genes that contribute to susceptibility to recurrent/persistent middle ear disease. Five hundred families with at least 2 children who have undergone tympanostomy tube insertion will be enrolled. A blood sample will be obtained from the children who had tubes and any available parent (at least 1), as well as any siblings without significant histories of middle ear disease.
The URT and Middle Ear Microbiota in Health and During Chronic OME
Otitis Media With EffusionHealthyThis study analyses which bacteria are present in the middle ear space and adjacent upper respiratory tract niches in healthy people and in patients suffering from chronic otitis media with effusion (OME; glue ear). The aim is to identify and isolate bacteria that are more common and more abundant in healthy people and to evaluate their potential to protect against bacteria commonly involved in OME and other upper respiratory tract infections. To this end, samples will be collected from both groups (healthy vs OME) and analysed through sequencing of the bacterial 16S gene. In addition, samples obtained from healthy participants will be cultivated to isolate bacteria of interest.
Vaccination Impact Against Pneumococcal Disease on Acute Otitis Media Morbidity in Colombian Children...
Acute Otitis MediaPneumoniaThe purpose of this study is to provide data on trends of morbidity due to Acute Otitis Media (AOM) (primary analysis) and morbidity and mortality due to pneumonia, and AOM related health care resources before and after the introduction of vaccination against pneumococcal disease within the Universal Mass Vaccination (UMV) in Colombia.
A Novel Objective Diagnostic Test for Otitis Media With Effusion
Otitis Media With EffusionOtitis media with effusion (OME) cases refer to a clinically silent condition. Otoscopic findings are subjective and not always reliable. As an objective test tympanometric evaluation is imperfect for diagnosis of OME. The objective of our study was to investigate, in OME cases, the correlation of tympanic membrane color changes with the presence and viscosity of effusion in the middle ear. The study aimed to provide objective diagnostic and therapeutic criteria for patients scheduled for surgery by 2 means: measuring the viscosity of the fluid and evaluating color changes objectively with red-green-blue (RGB) measurements.
National Trends in Otitis Media in Children Under 5 Years of Age
Otitis MediaMyringotomy Tube Insertion2 moreThe rationale for this study is to assess the change in ambulatory care visit rates for acute otitis media between the period before (2001-2009) and after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (13vPnC) (2011-2013) among children less than 5 years old in the United States.
Study to Identify and Characterize Bacteria Causing Acute Otitis Media in South African Children...
Acute Otitis MediaThe purpose of this study is to identify and characterize the bacteria causing acute otitis media episode in HIV-positive and HIV-negative children (>=3 months to <5 years) in South Africa. Middle ear fluid sampling either by tympanocentesis or by careful sampling of spontaneous otorrhoea will be done; nasopharyngeal aspirate and urine sample will also be collected from the subjects.
Eustachian Tube Testing in a Pressure Chamber -- Validation Study
OtitisThis study will compare Eustachian tube function (ETF) testing in adults with intact tympanic membranes (TM) using a pressure chamber to that obtained using standard methods requiring a non-intact TM.
The Influence of Feeding Position on Pulmonary Morbidity in Young Children
Pulmonary DiseasesTonsillar Hypertrophy2 moreSupine feeding position is associated with serous otitis media. The hypothesis is that supine feeding is associated with recurrent otitis media, tonsillar and adenoid hypertrophy and recurrent pneumonia secondary to recurrent aspiration.
