This is a hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial which will be conducted at the emergency department (ED) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Arkansas. The hypothesis of this study is that use of the CARS (a computerized mental health screener) will modify emergency department treatment of patients with previously undiagnosed mental illness.

A randomized study designed to determine whether telephone based interventions can prevent return hospital visits for elderly and frail patients with acute symptoms of heart failure. Specifically, the intervention will improve patients ability to monitor and address self care of heart failure at home.

This randomized controlled trial evaluates the effect of virtual reality glasses applied during emergency surgical intervention with local anesthesia on patients anxiety. This study hypothesizes that virtual reality glasses reduces anxiety.

This is a single-site, randomized, controlled trial. Investigators will evaluate feasibility of the Emergency Department Healthcare Education Assessment and Response for Teen Relationships (ED-HEART) intervention among adolescents age 14-19 years receiving care in the Children's Mercy emergency department.

The purpose of this dual-site quasi-experimental pilot study is to evaluate if the implementation of an educational intervention paired with an environmental assessment to address accessibility barriers is associated with improvement in staff knowledge and skills, and adherence to national guidelines for use (evaluation in the knowledge transfer framework) in an emergency department (ED) setting.

This will be a prospective, patient-oriented, pilot randomized clinical trial to evaluate (in aggregate) both the use of the Roche Cobas Liat Flu/RSV Assay and the use of pharmacist-led education for providers in the interpretation of these test results.

Pain is a major problem in the care of children in pediatric emergencies. Indeed, its relief rests on the oral communication of the young patient, who does not always able to it (difficult to verbalize, fear of the hospital, problem mental development ...). There is no way in which pain can be apprehended objectively, immediately and effectively. To advance our knowledge of this problem, several approaches have been studied as from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), or from autonomic parameters. However, all these approaches have their limitations: although fMRI presents interesting performances, it allows only a retrospective analysis, and cannot adapt to the clinical context of the young patient for example. EEG-based approaches and autonomic parameters show interesting results but suffer from perfectible sensitivity to muscle activation for EEG whereas the vegetative parameters to stress. In this context, our working hypothesis considers that the search for markers of painful perception must be based on a neurophysiological approach, based on the combined analysis of the EEG and autonomic responses in real time. The aim of this work is to study (1) the cortical (EEG) and autonomic (cardiovascular, skin, pupillary) responses induced by sutures in children who can communicate their pain according to whether they cause pain or not.

The purpose of this research study is to determine how body weight changes the drug level of an emergency contraceptive pill containing a hormone called levonorgestrel (LNG). This emergency contraceptive is available to women without a prescription, but has recently been found to not work as well to prevent pregnancies in women of higher body weight. The overall goal of this research is to improve the effectiveness of contraception for women, no matter their weight.

This study will develop and test an intervention given to emergency medicine providers to improve adherence to clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for pneumonia and sepsis.

Tobacco smoke claims approximately 6000 lives annually in BC. In this study, the investigators will determine whether referring smoking patients from the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Department to the investigators provincial QuitNow smoking cessation service will lead to improved patient outcomes, including number of cigarettes smoked, any quit attempts, and actual smoking cessation. Participants in the usual care arm will receive standard care. Participants in the intervention arm will be eligible for referral to QuitNow Services, where telephone counseling will be offered. Further follow-up on all enrolled patients will be conducted at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months to re-assess smoking status. The investigators hypothesis is that the intervention arm will have a higher quit rate that the control arm.
