Treatment for Sleep Disturbance in Orthopaedic Trauma Patients
Sleep DisturbanceTraumaThe purpose of the study is to test the efficacy of sleep treatment in human patients following traumatic injury. Specifically, the study will determine if treatment consisting of melatonin and education related to sleep habits are effective in treating sleep disturbance and improving sleep quality in Orthopaedic trauma patients. We hope to learn if melatonin and sleep education effectively improve sleep following traumatic injury, and improve outcomes.
Internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adolescents With Sleep Problems- a Feasibility Trial...
Insomnia DisorderDepressive Disorder4 moreThe primary objective of this study is to test the feasibility and efficacy of Internet-delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for adolescents (13 - 17 years) with sleep problems (ICBT-I). All participants will receive ICBT-I for six weeks. The investigators will also evaluate the effect of the intervention on comorbid psychiatric symptoms and function.
Electrical Vestibular Nerve Stimulation (VeNS) as a Treatment for Insomnia
InsomniaSleep DisturbanceInsomnia is known to be one of the most common health concerns in in the general population and has been associated with several health consequences. Medications are known to be effective, and currently serve as the primary treatment for insomnia but their use is limited due to the risk of adverse events. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT-1) has also been shown to be effective and safer in the treatment of insomnia but presents its own limitations such as the time, cost, and training required. The relationship between vestibular stimulation and sleep continues to be explored, however its usefulness in the treatment of insomnia is still unknown. Vestibular stimulation itself has been shown to be safe across multiple populations. If vestibular stimulation is shown to be effective in the treatment of insomnia, it could serve as a safer alternative to medications. It could also require less cost, time, and training than CBT-1, providing a treatment option that is not only safe and effective, but broadly available to the general population. Consequently this trial seeks to evaluate the efficacy of non-invasive electrical vestibular nerve stimulation as a method of improving sleep quality and quantity, as compared to a sham control, in patients newly diagnosed with insomnia.
Treating Sleep Problems in VA Adult Day Health Care
InsomniaSleep DisordersThe Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act (Millennium Act) of 1999 mandated the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to provide non-institutional long-term care to veterans. Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) is a key component of that spectrum of long-term care services. Veterans in ADHC commonly suffer from limited poor functioning, depression, cognitive problems and low quality of life. These factors can lead to continued deterioration in functioning, loss of independence, hospitalizations, nursing home placement and death. Sleep disruption is associated with depression, low quality of life, functional decline, nursing home placement, and death among older people. Sleep disturbance is common among ADHC patients, it is not addressed within routine clinical care, and treatment may be limited to medications. Studies show that untreated insomnia and medications for insomnia can increase risk of falls and other health events among older persons. On the other hand, non-medication treatments for sleep do not show these problems. These treatments have been shown to be effective in other studies. The goal of this study is to test non-medication treatments to improve sleep among older Veterans with insomnia in a VA ADHC program. The study design will facilitate translation into routine care and application in other similar VA programs.
Yoga for Persons With Severe Visual Impairment
Sleep DisturbanceStress3 moreThis study aims to provide novel information on the feasibility of yoga interventions for secondary symptoms related to severe vision loss, such as sleep disturbances, negative mood states, fall risk and balance. This information will be important for determining safe, cost-effective and reliable practices for the benefits of yoga as an alternative means for improved health and well-being. A yoga intervention that is integrative and evidence-based will benefit the blind population through effective treatments and prevention of secondary symptoms as well as serve to inform rehabilitation specialists, educators, and clinicians in the future.
Study on Hemodialysis: Illumination Effects
Sleep ProblemsPrevious research has shown that sleep quality in hemodialysis patients is disturbed. One of the possible explanations is an insufficient or disturbed melatonin rhythm. Melatonin rhythm is regulated by exposure to light. In this feasibility study, the investigators examine the effects of light therapy during dialysis on sleep, melatonin rhythm and mood.
A Pilot Study to Investigate the Effect of Cytotoxic Therapy and/or Radiotherapy on Cancer Related...
LeukemiaCLLThe goal of this clinical research study is to learn if treatments to kill cancer cells including lenalidomide and/or radiation therapy can help to control symptoms such as sleep problems and fatigue in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and/or breast cancer.
The Rocky Sleep Study
Sleep ProblemsNight waking with crying can be a distressing and difficult experience for infants and their parents. The investigators want to reduce infant night waking and crying and improve parents' views of their infants' sleep. This study will help the investigators determine whether parents who receive group teaching about infant sleep and follow-up phone calls provided by Public Health Nurses will reduce numbers of infants' night wakes and parents' perceptions of infant sleep difficulties compared with parents who receive a group teaching about infant safety and follow-up phone calls provided by Public Health Nurses. Results from this study will help the investigators improve their practice when assisting parents and infants with sleep problems.
