Epilepsy-related Brain Tumors Register

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is defined by a cerebral disorder characterized by a lasting predisposition to generate epileptic seizures and by the neurobiological, cognitive, psychological and social consequences of this affection. The definition of epilepsy requires the occurrence of at least one epileptic seizure. 1% of the population suffers from epilepsy. The most common causes are genetic and vascular, 10% of epileptic syndromes are caused by a tumor. The incidence of brain tumors in people with epilepsy is approximately 4%. Among patients with brain tumor (s), the frequency of epilepsy is 30% or more depending on type of tumeur. 30-50% of brain tumors are revealed by an epileptic seizure and 10 to 30% of patients with brain tumor (s) will develop seizures during their evolution. The main objective is to evaluate the frequency of epileptic seizures according to the type of brain tumor.

Brain-Shift Monitoring Using 3D Scanning

Craniotomy for Epilepsy and Malignant Tumor Removal

A prospective non-invasive data/image collection for evaluation of the performance of the Advanced Scanners 3D scanner during brain surgery. The primary objective is to evaluate the performance of the scanner in determining the brain surface shape over multiple time points during craniotomies (surgical opening into the skull), and present those shapes in full color, with high resolution in all three coordinates of 3D space. A secondary objective is to use the measurements to determine brain shift as a function of time.

Association of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) rs6265 Gene Polymorphism With Susceptibility...

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a common neurological condition that affects people of all ages.Recent studies found that epilepsy is associated with several chromosomal regions, where mutations in these regions cause neurological dysfunction. BDNF which is the most ample neurotropic factor in the CNS, has survival and growth promoting roles in a variety of neurons. It has been shown to promote excitatory (glutamatergic) synapses while weakening inhibitory (GABAergic) ones. A nonsynonymous G to A single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) exists at position 196 of exon 2 (rs6265), which results in valine (val) to methionine (met) substitution. This polymorphism affects intracellular packaging of pro-BDNF, its axonal transport and in turn, activity-dependent secretion of BDNF at the synapse.
