This phase II trial is to see if combining bevacizumab with low-dose cyclophosphamide works in treating patients with ovarian epithelial or primary peritoneal cancer that has come back or spread to other parts of the body. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, can block cancer growth in different ways. Some block the ability of cancer cells to grow and spread. Others find cancer cells and help kill them or deliver cancer-killing substances to them. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as cyclophosphamide, work in different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining bevacizumab with cyclophosphamide may kill more tumor cells.

This research study was designed to determine the effectiveness of the drug, topotecan, given intravenously (into a vein) together with the drug gemcitabine in patients with recurrent platinum-sensitive ovarian, fallopian or primary peritoneal cancer, as well as tumors of mixed mullerian origin. Additional purposes are to determine the long term outcome and side effects of this combination treatment. Since topotecan and gemcitabine have different mechanisms of action, the combination of these 2 drugs may provide better results than either drug alone. Prior studies suggest that the combination of topotecan and gemcitabine improves the effects on the tumor and also appeared to be well tolerated.

The purpose of this project is to determine if a new combination of drugs, erlotinib (Tarceva™) and bevacizumab is safe and effective for treating women diagnosed with ovarian cancer whose cancer has progressed while on prior standard chemotherapy treatment with a taxane (paclitaxel or docetaxel) and a platinum (cisplatin or carboplatin).

Randomized phase III trial to compare the effectiveness of tamoxifen with that of thalidomide in treating women who have recurrent ovarian epithelial cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer. Estrogen can stimulate the growth of some types of cancer cells. Hormone therapy using tamoxifen may fight cancer by blocking the uptake of estrogen. Thalidomide may stop the growth of cancer by stopping blood flow to the tumor. It is not yet known whether thalidomide is more effective than tamoxifen in treating ovarian epithelial cancer, fallopian tube cancer, or primary peritoneal cancer.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Combining more than one drug may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known which chemotherapy regimen is most effective for ovarian epithelial cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying high-dose chemotherapy to see how well it works compared to standard chemotherapy in treating patients with stage III or stage IV ovarian epithelial cancer that has been removed during surgery.
