Risk Profile for Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation

The objective of this study is to assess the risk profile in patients with atrial fibrillation, which represents the degree of changes in the atrial tissue and which can help predict in which patients rhythm control will be successful. This risk profile will consist of a combination of underlying (heart) disease and risk factors, measurements obtained from echocardiograms, and circulating biomarkers. Ultimately this risk profile can be used to guide type of rhythm control therapy in individual patients with atrial fibrillation.

Medtronic Reveal XT Study

Atrial Fibrillation

While surgical treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF) has been performed for over 20 years, virtually all of the historical series reported only the recurrence of symptomatic AF and have used only intermittent electrocardiogram (ECG) follow-up. This study compares the use of traditional arrhythmia assessment (ECG and 24-hour holter monitoring) with the use of the Medtronic Reveal XT device to continuously record heart rhythm to quantify postoperative arrhythmia burden following surgical treatment for AF in patients undergoing either lone or concomitant heart surgery.

A Pilot Study of a Contact Force Catheter for Pulmonary Vein Antrum Isolation

Atrial FibrillationBurden of Atrial Fibrillation

The knowledge of the real-time contact force leads to a greater reduction in atrial fibrillation burden after pulmonary vein antrum isolation.

Long-Standing Persistant Atrial Fibrillation-Pulmonary Vein Isolation With or Without Ablation

Atrial FibrillationTachycardia

The chronic success rate, defined as freedom from any atrial tachyarrhythmias will increase from 35% to 60% by ablation of complex fragmented atrial electrograms potentials in addition to pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) as compared to PVI alone in patients with long-standing persistent AF.

Use of Fish Oils to Reduce Recurrence of Atrial Fibrillation Following DC Cardioversion

Atrial Fibrillation

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether fish oil supplements may be beneficial in preventing the recurrence of atrial fibrillation after cardioversion. Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition which can sometimes be successfully treated by a cardioversion. Cardioversion involves resetting the heart back to normal with the use of electric current. There is a tendency for the atrial fibrillation to recur , days weeks or even months after the cardioversion. Fish oil supplements may be of benefit to patients with heart problems Recent evidence suggests that fish oils may be beneficial to patients with rhythm disturbances.

Atrial FibrillationAtrial Flutter

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether fish oils may be of benefit to patients with certain heart rhythm disturbances called atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. Atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter are two heart conditions that can be successfully treated in the hospital by an ablation (in the case of atrial flutter) or a cardioversion (in the case of atrial fibrillation). Ablation involves the application of high frequency energy waves to a particular spot in the heart. Cardioversion involves resetting the heart back to a normal rhythm with the use of an electric current. Fish oil supplements may be of benefit to patients with heart problems. Recent evidence suggests that fish oils may benefit those with rhythm disturbances.

Trigger- vs. Substrate-Ablation for Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial Fibrillation

The purpose of this study is to compare two strategies of catheter-based treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: Pulmonary vein isolation either alone or combined with electrogram-guided substrate-ablation.

Genomic Investigation of Cardiovascular Diseases

Coronary Artery DiseaseMyocardial Infarction4 more

This proposal puts forward a research plan to initiate a genetic databank, henceforth referred to as The Genebank at Scripps Clinic Registry. This database will usher in genomic research at Scripps as we strive to stay at the forefront of cardiovascular research in the new century. Human subject donation allows for the creation of the proposed genebank.

Efficacy and Safety Study on Agilis NxT Introducer in AF Patients

Atrial Fibrillation

To prove if the success rate of curative treatment of atrial fibrillation in left atrial circumferential pulmonary vein ablation is higher by using a steerable transseptal introducer giving access to the left atrium then by using a conventionally introducer with fixed curve.
