Autonomic Nervous System, Fatigue and Intolerance to Physical Training, and Overtraining in High-Level...
AthletesTraining1 moreSports training aims to enhance an athlete's performance (overcompensation). To do that, the athlete must go through periods of fatigue and lower performance (overreaching). When the training plan is balanced, this fatigue is short and reversible. If the training load is too heavy or if recuperation periods are too short, it can lead to persistence fatigue that may only be reversible in the long term. This state of fatigue is part of the broader clinical picture of overtraining, which includes stark changes in performance as well as mood and sleep disorders. Many prediction and characterization methods based on biological markers have been evaluated, but they have not been put into practice in sports training due to obstacles such as reliability, interindividual variability and high costs. This study aims to evaluate a new approach based on the variability of an individual's heart rate (RR variability), which is a way of measuring autonomic nervous system (ASN) activity. It is non-invasive, low-cost, and has already proven useful in athlete health monitoring.
Emotional and Cognitive Determinants of Post-stroke Fatigue
StrokeFatigue6 moreFatigue is a prevalent, prolonged and partly disabling symptom following cerebral stroke. The health services has little knowledge of fatigue, both in terms of what characterizes those affected, and with regard to how fatigue can be treated. Persons going through a stroke may experience impairments in cognitive functions such as attention and memory. This will often cause previously effortless activities of daily living to become strenuous and exhausting. Experiencing a stroke will also in many cases lead to a major change in life due to other related loss of function, grief and health-related concerns. Emotional reactions like depression and anxiety are widespread. Specific knowledge of how cognitive impairment, emotional reactions and coping strategies contribute to development and maintenance of fatigue is lacking. The present research project will contribute with new and important knowledge in this area. A total of 250 adults have been followed up after stroke with multiple examinations. Average age at the time of stroke was 70 years. The investigators now plan to follow them up three to four years after stroke. This provides a unique opportunity to investigate how depression and anxiety, over time, may be related to the experience of fatigue, cognitive impairment and negative coping strategies such as worrying and rumination. The investigators will use questionnaires and cognitive tests when examining these associations. Such new knowledge about cognitive and emotional factors related to the development of fatigue long-term after stroke may help determine who is at risk of developing symptoms of fatigue. Furthermore, it can shed light on possible preventional measures, and provide better suited advice to those affected by fatigue. This knowledge can also pave the way for new, research-based treatment methods.
Cardiopulmonary Testing in ME/CFS to Improve Diagnostic Accuracy
Myalgic EncephalomyelitisChronic Fatigue SyndromeCircumstantial evidence suggests that patients diagnosed with myalgic encephalopathy/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) perform worse on day 2 in a 2-day consecutive cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). The aim of this study is to examine if CPET can distinguish between ME/CFS patients and healthy controls.
Perioperative Early Tiredness (Acute Fatigue) in Patients With Epithelial Ovarian Cancer
Perioperative Early Tiredness (Acute Fatigue)Electrical Cardiometry3 moreIn surgical patients early risk prediction of postoperative complications and organ dysfunctions is still an important clinical challenge whereas appropriate risk predictors are still missing. In this regard, fatigue is a complex phenomenon, is affected by many factors and has been shown to be associated with delayed return to normal activity after surgery. The investigators hypothesize that early tiredness (acute fatigue) assessed shortly after surgery is associated to postoperative complications and organ dysfunctions and might be used for risk stratification. Therefore, in this prospective, observational study the investigators introduce and evaluate a newly developed score to assess early fatigue during the perioperative period ("Acute Fatigue Score", AFS). The AFS and the Identity-Consequence Fatigue Scala will be used to assess early fatigue and perioperative time courses and inter-rater-variability will be evaluated. The rating of these two fatigue scores will be evaluated regarding the association with hemodynamic, immunologic, endothelial, metabolic, gastrointestinal measures as well as organ dysfunction and complications after surgery. Furthermore, hemodynamic, immunologic, endothelial, metabolic and gastrointestinal measures are investigated with respect to the intraoperative course and postoperative organ dysfunction and complications. In a subgroup of patients, patients will undergo specialized metabolic measures to investigate mitochondrial dysfunction during the perioperative period.
The Effect of Cognitive Dual Task and Mental Fatigue on Landing Biomechanics
Landing BiomechanicsFatigueIn this study, three-dimensional biomechanics , by means of lower limb joint angles and moments (opto-electronic system with synchronised force plate), of landing tasks (anticipated, unanticipated and cognitive dual task) before and after a mental fatigue protocol will be compared in a population of basketball, handball and volleyball players.

FatigueEnd Stage Renal DiseaseTo investigate the course and diurnal change of fatigue symptoms and haemodialysis related symptoms in chronic haemodialysis patients, its relation to haemodialysis treatment and the association with other factors by implementing an ecological momentary assessment procedure incorporated in a webapplication.
The Reliability Assessment of Emergency Paramedics' Fatigue Using Automated Pupillometry
Mental FatigueEmergency Paramedics' FatigueDue to the limitations of current approaches to assess emergency paramedics' fatigue, a portable, quick, easy, and objective technique is required to be developed. The aim of the study was to investigate the reliability of automated pupillometry to assess mental fatigue based on a driver simulator.
Comparing the Variation in Laparoscopic Skills Acquisition in Obstetrics & Gynaecology and General...
SurgeryFatigue5 moreThe investigators postulate that there is a difference in the acquisition of Fundamental Laparoscopic Skills (FLS) between general surgical and Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) trainees. This discrepancy is also likely to influence the musculoskeletal and cognitive fatigue trainees experience within both specialties. Additionally there is likely to be a discrepancy in the expectations of consultants and trainees on skills perceived to be important at the completion of training (CCT). This study aims to compare and evaluate the discrepancy in FLS acquisition amongst O&G and GS trainees in order to identify areas for improvements in the training pathway, the associated fatigue experience and highlight the expectations perceived to be required at the completion of training.
Prevalence of Fatigue in Hemodialysis Patients
Hemodialysis PatientsThe prevalence of end stage renal disease in Taiwan was listed first all over the world. Fatigue, which makes patients unable to be competitive to play their functional roles, is one of the most bothersome symptoms of patients receiving long-term hemodialysis. Tracing back to the development of its relating studies, there is no accurate reason that why does people undergoing hemodialysis feel fatigued. Conclusive predictors of fatigue are still not shown up yet. Paper review indicated that the level of L-Carnitine concentration, which affect metabolism of fatty acid, had correlation with fatigue and muscle strength in this population. The serum concentration of L-Carnitine is influenced a lot by hemodialysis. When there is deficiency of energy supply, it resulted to decline of muscle strength, which increased frequency and intensity of fatigue. Hence, the purposes of this study are (1) to understand the basic condition of fatigue level, muscle and metabolism of fat and carbohydrate among hemodialysis patients, (2) to analyze correlation among muscle strength, metabolism of fat/carbohydrate, and fatigue, and (3) to understand correlations among demographic characteristics, blood test data (hemoglobin, albumin, Kt/V, urea reduction ratio(URR), blood urea nitrogen(BUN), creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, and C-reactive protein), mental and social conditions (depression, anxiety, and social support), muscle strength and fatigue, seeking further exploring predictors of muscle strength and fatigue. The study use cross-sectional descriptive correlative design with consecutive sampling. Recruit patients from a hemodialysis unit in a medical center in north Taiwan after informed- consent. The estimated sample size is 100. To understand relationship among muscle strength, by-products of fatty acid and carbohydrate and fatigue, we collect data by measuring their muscle strength (handgrip and 30 seconds sit-to-stand), and analyzing blood test data and the structured questionnaires which included mental/social data (depression, anxiety, social support and fatigue level). Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, Spearsman's rank correlation and stepwise regression were used to analyze the collected data. Hope this research can get advance in comprehension of cause of fatigue and improve the fatigue symptom of hemodialysis patients.
Metabolic Effects of Rowing Multi-races Events
DietNutritional Status2 moreThe aim of this study was to assess the relevance of NRI or athletes' NRI (ANRI) utilization to detect nutrition-related risks of failure in competition in the particular population of rowers. In the morning, 60 to 90 minutes before the first race of a national level multi-races competition (three races for each subjects), body weight were measured and blood samples were collected with subjects at rest and in post-absorptive condition (last meal at least 2.5 hours before blood collection). Body weight was also recorded in the same conditions six weeks before the competition to calculate weight state (actual weight /usual weight ´ 100) and subjects were asked to identify the date of diet beginning. Body weight was measured using a floor scale (Mettler-Toledo floor scale, France), body mass index (BMI) was calculated from the ratio of weight (in kg) by height squared (in meters) and training volume (total duration of training in a week) was determined after discussion with athletes and coaches.
