Effect of Beta-Alanine on Heart Rate Response

ExerciseFatigue

Beta-alanine, as a method to increase muscle carnosine, has been shown to enhance muscle buffering capacity and delay fatigue. Various fatigue tests have been utilized to examine the effectiveness of beta-alanine supplementation. The physical working capacity test has been used to show significant increases in physical working capacities following supplementation. The physical working capacity tests were originally developed by Moritani et al. 1981 and Devries et al. 1982 to measure the point of onset of muscular fatigue. It is hypothesized that beta-alanine will increase physical working capacity at heart rate threshold, thereby signifying a delay in fatigue.

Sleep and Training Aspects in Dialysis Fatigue - Exercise Intervention

Fatigue

The purpose of the current study is to investigate whether changes in patients' sleep quality and quantity will be followed by improvements in parameters related to physical and mental fatigue in patients receiving hemodialysis therapy. More specific, the current project will investigate the effect of a 9 months intradialytic exercise training in aspects related to fatigue, quality of life and depression.

Korean Red Ginseng in Treating Patients With Fatigue Caused by Chemotherapy for Colorectal Cancer...

Colorectal Cancer

Korean Red Ginseng may improve fatigue in healthy subject. It is not yet known whether Korean Red Ginseng is effective compared with a placebo in chemotherapy. The purpose of this study is to determine whether Korean Red Ginseng is effective in the treatment of the fatigue from colorectal cancer with chemotherapy.(modified FOLFOX-6)

SWS And Daytime Functioning in Chronic FatiguE Syndrome (SAFFE)

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The investigators wish to investigate whether enhancement of SWS, which is seen after a drug called sodium oxybate, reduces the impact of sleep disruption in CFS on daytime function, specifically sleepiness and mental performance. This is a safe and well-tolerated drug that is licensed for excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) and cataplexy associated with narcolepsy. The investigators will study 12 patients diagnosed with CFS using international diagnostic guidelines. The investigators will record overnight sleep with EEG (brainwave) measurement on the 1st and 4th nights of a 4 night period during which sodium oxybate and placebo will be taken nightly, and the investigators will measure next-day sleepiness, mental performance and fatigue, and compare drug and placebo nights.

Reducing the Risk of Alarm Fatigue Through the Use of Focused Management in Safety Huddles

Clinical Alarms

Context: Alarm fatigue is a threat to hospital patient safety. National surveys reveal that high alarm rates interrupt patient care, reduce trust in alarms, and lead clinicians to disable alarms entirely. Safety huddles offer an appropriate forum for reviewing alarm data and identifying patients whose high alarm rates may necessitate safe tailoring of alarm limits. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of a focused physiologic monitor alarm reduction intervention integrated into safety huddles that involves discussing safe monitor parameter adjustments on the physiologic monitor alarm rates of individual patients with high alarm rates who meet "low acuity" criteria. Study Design: A prospective, quasi-experimental pilot study of the impact of the huddle intervention on the alarm rates of low acuity high alarm rate individual patients discussed in huddles in the PICU. The huddle intervention will consist of a script to facilitate the discussion of the alarm data. Setting/Participants: Participants will include all low acuity patients and their providers in the PICU at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Study Interventions and Measures: The primary outcome is the rate of crisis and warning alarms per patient day for intervention cases as compared with others in the high alarm / low acuity cohort. Safety measures will include unexpected changes in patient acuity or code blue events within one week of monitor change or discharge.

Patient-Partner Stress Management Effects on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms and Neuroimmune Process...

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The purpose of this study is to test the effects of a videotelephone-delivered patient-partner dual-focused cognitive behavioral stress management intervention on chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) symptoms and related psychosocial and neuroimmune processes in patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Study tests the hypothesis that videophone-delivered patient-partner cognitive behavioral stress management (T-PP-CBSM) intervention improves patient CFS symptoms relative to a videophone-delivered patient-partner Health Information (PP-T- HI) condition.

The Effect of Fatigue on the Clinical Performance

Fatigue

The primary aim of this randomized controlled trial is to examine the effect of fatigue on clinical performance in a simulated obstetric emergency. This scenario was chosen because it is a common clinical situation faced by anesthesia providers on call and therefore likely to occur when a provider is fatigued. Secondary outcomes will include the evaluation of other factors that worsen fatigue related decrement in performance including age, years of training/practice and clinical load prior to study participation.

Assessment of the Acute Effect of Cycling Practice in Lumbar and Thigh Muscles

Physical EnduranceMuscle Fatigue2 more

Introduction: Cycling represents a very important level of practice, being among the most practiced sports in Spain. As in any other sport discipline, its practice is associated with the appearance of overloads and sports injuries. Specifically, the 2 most affected areas are the lumbar and knee areas, with an annual prevalence of 58% and 36%, respectively. There is no clear hypothesis to explain the low back pain associated with the practice of cycling, but several authors agree that it may be due to holding an inverted posture of the rachis and the characteristics associated with this sport: long duration, static posture, high intensities, vibrations generated by the terrain, and so forth. The project proposes to analyze the acute effect of a long-lasting bicycle trip (3 hours) on the muscles involved in low back and knee pain, see, lumbar paravertebral, quadriceps and hamstrings, by means of tensiomyography (TMG). Objectives: the main objective of this study is to evaluate the behavior of the mechanical characteristics of the lower back and thigh muscles, by means of tensiomyography, in amateur cyclists after an acute effort on road and mountain bikes, and to study their possible relationship with low back pain (LBP).

Effects of Aerobic Exercise Training on Nurses' Sleep Quality, Fatigue, Attention and Cortisol Profile...

NurseAttention4 more

Shift work in nursing has been found to result in sleep disruption and sleep deprivation, and in sleepiness or fatigue at work. Slow reaction, insufficient attention and poor judgement often come with increased fatigue, which contributes to a high risk of accident and patient safety. Studies have shown that aerobic exercise is helpful in promoting high sleep quality. The study is conducted a prospective parallel randomized trial is performed to 60 nurses with low sleep quality. The subjects are randomly assigned to: (i) the experimental group, in which aerobic exercise training is given; (ii) the control group, in which the subjects kept their original lifestyles. The study aims to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise training on nurses' sleep quality, fatigue, attention and cortisol profile.
