Oral Versus Rectal Ibuprofen for Fever in Young Children - a Randomized Control Study.

Fever

Fever is one of the most common symptoms in pediatrics and one of the most common reasons for visits in pediatricians' office and pediatric emergency departments. Many parents consider fever to be the most terrifying symptom. Ibuprofen is an effective and safe treatment for febrile children. Until recently ibuprofen was available only in tablets suspension and as a liquid gel. All these dosage form are administered orally. Rectal suppositories are often essential for treating febrile children who cannot take medications by mouth (e.g vomiting). In the current study we aim to compare the effect on fever of ibuprofen given as suspension with ibuprofen suppositories.

Impact of Procalcitonin on the Management of Children Aged 1 to 36 Month Presenting With a Fever...

ProcalcitoninFever Without Source2 more

Serious bacterial infections are often difficult to detect in children with fever without source. Procalcitonin is a better blood marker of infection than White blood cell count and possibly than C-reactive protein. This could lead to a reduction in antibiotic prescription. Our objective is to evaluate the impact of Procalcitonin result on antibiotic prescription in children 1 to 36 month old with fever without source and our hypothesis is that it will lower the antibiotic prescription rate

Improving the Diagnosis of Traveller's Fevers in Point Of Care (POC)

Traveller's Fever

A point-of-care laboratory (POC) was set at North Hospital, Marseille, France for the diagnosis in less than two hours of traveller's fever caused by known pathogens, close to the reception of Emergency service. In this instance 30% of patients have no etiological diagnosis after the POC traveller's fever tests . The objective of this study is to implement a new diagnosis strategy relying on the hypothesis that a rectal swab would improve the etiological diagnosis of traveller's fever of at least 10%.

Surveillance of Summer Febrile Syndromes of Viral Origin in South of France

Summer Febrile Syndromes of Viral Origin

The aim is to document viral etiologies of isolated fevers and inlfuenza-like syndromes during summertime in South of France in order to better understand the role of known vector-borne viruses such as Toscana virus, West Nile virus during seasonal activity of the arthropod vector. In each of the four cities, a network of general practitioners will be associated in the project to recruit patients who are not hospitalized. The combined involvement of infectious disease specialists and general practitioner will augment the range of patients (mild disease and sever cases) in the study.

Diagnosis of Septicaemia by Detection of Microbial DNA in Blood in Severe Infections

Febrile NeutropeniaEndocarditis1 more

The primary purpose is to improve and quicken the microbial diagnosis in severe infections, since only one third of the cases are documented by blood cultures and adequate anti-infective therapy in the 48 hours reduced mortality and morbidity. Our hypothesis is that detection of microbial DNA in blood by real time PCR may increase the number of cases diagnosed for bacteraemia or fungemia and shorten the time to positive results, which will provide information for an adequate anti-infectious therapy.

Clinical Effect of Preventive Use of Tylenol on Fever After Removal of Drainage Tube in Lumbar Fusion...

Lumbar Spinal StenosisLumbar Disc Herniation1 more

This study evaluates the influence of Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs on preventing fever after the removal of drainage tube in the patients who suffered lumbar fusion surgery, if the outcome turn out positive, the preventive use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs could decrease the possibility of fever happening when we remove the tube.

Impact of the Lab-score on Antibiotic Prescription Rate in Children With Fever Without Source

Fever Without Source

Detecting serious bacterial infections (SBI) in children presenting to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) with fever without source (FWS) is a frequent diagnostic challenge. The recently described Lab-score, based on the combined determination of Procalcitonin, C-Reactive Protein (CRP) and urine dipstick results, has been shown an accurate tool for SBI prediction on retrospective cohorts. The investigators aimed to assess the usefulness of the Lab-score in safely decreasing unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions in children with FWS, and to prospectively determine the diagnostic characteristics of the Lab-score compared to other classically used SBI biomarkers (white blood cell (WBC) count, band count and CRP).

Assessing Fever Rates in Children Ages 24 to 59 Months After Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine (LAIV)...

Fever

In this study, the investigators will prospectively assess fever rates in 24-59 month old patients during days 0-10 after administration of inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) or live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). Children in one of three study sites who receive these vaccines as part of their routine care can enroll in this study if their parent has the ability to receive and send text messages. Children enrolled in this study will be observed for an eleven day period starting on the day of vaccine administration via a series text messages to their parents.
