Healing Through Affective Self-Awareness in Fibromyalgia: a Randomized Controlled Trial

Fibromyalgia

The investigators are studying whether a brief three-session mind-body workshop helps people with fibromyalgia. The investigators hypothesize that this workshop will significantly improve pain and other symptoms, compared to usual care.

Effect of Repetitive Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Chronic Pelvic Pain

Chronic Pelvic PainInterstitial Cystitis3 more

We will rigorously test whether modulation of the motor cortex by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an effective treatment for patients with chronic pelvic pain through the following specific aims: A) The primary aim of this study is to determine whether transcranial direct current stimulation applied to the motor cortex in patients with chronic pelvic pain induces a significant decrease in the pain or symptoms as compared with sham tDCS. We will also measure changes in the clinical symptom scores of multiple pelvic organs, drug intake (narcotic), anxiety, depression, traumatic stress, as well as overall improvement in the quality of life to assess the effects of this treatment. B) Determine the duration of the clinical effects of tDCS. We will therefore compare the amelioration of pain and related symptoms between active and sham tDCS for one year following treatment. C) Determine whether tDCS changes the threshold for pain detection as compared with sham tDCS. Patients with chronic pelvic pain have a lower threshold for pain as compared to healthy subjects and we hypothesized that this threshold will increase after stimulation with tDCS. D) Finally, we will examine whether 5 days of tDCS treatment is safe for use in chronic pelvic pain patients. Safety will be assessed through neuropsychological tests and adverse event reporting.

Growth Hormone as Add-on Treatment in Severe Fibromyalgia With Low IGF-1 Serum Levels (56 Characters)...

FibromyalgiaGrowth Hormone Deficiency

There are evidences of functional growth hormone (GH) deficiency, expressed by means of low serum levels of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), in a subset of fibromyalgia patients. The efficacy of low GH doses versus placebo has been demonstrated in this population. We assessed the efficacy and safety of GH added to standard therapy compared to standard therapy alone in the treatment of severe, prolonged and well-treated fibromialgya patients with low IGF-1 levels.

Health Promotion for Women With Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

Women with chronic disabling conditions such as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) must manage a wide variety of disease-related, intrapersonal, and environmental demands to maintain their health and quality of life. Engaging in health-promoting behaviors is one strategy recommended to manage disease symptoms and enhance quality of life (USDHHS, 2000). The purpose of this four-year study is to refine and test a theoretically and empirically based intervention to promote the health and well being of women with the chronic disabling condition of fibromyalgia. We hypothesize that women who participate in the "Lifestyle Counts" Intervention will report more greater self-efficacy for health behaviors, more frequent health behaviors and more positive health and quality of life than women in the comparison group.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Treating Women With Chronic Widespread Pain

FibromyalgiaChronic Pain1 more

While acute pain after surgery or trauma comes on suddenly and lasts for a limited amount of time, chronic pain persists and can continue for months and even years. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) uses a magnetic field to deliver a current to the brain and can affect brain activity. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of rTMS treatment in reducing chronic widespread pain in women.

Optimizing Fibromyalgia Self-management

Fibromyalgia

The overall objective of this work is to improve treatment outcomes for persons with fibromyalgia by optimizing the approach to self-management. The purpose of this research project is to evaluate and compare, in a randomized, controlled trial involving 200 women, the short and long-term effectiveness of four approaches to fibromyalgia self-management for improving health and functional status, self-efficacy, and symptom severity. Additionally, we will also examine the effect of each intervention on health care usage. We will assess the following 16-week interventions: cardiovascular and flexibility exercise strength training, cardiovascular and flexibility exercise Arthritis Foundation's Fibromyalgia Self-Help course a combination of the Fibromyalgia Self-Help Course and strength training exercise interventions

Coping Skills Training for Adolescents With Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia

Juvenile fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that can cause considerable suffering and difficulty in an adolescent's day-to-day activities. The purpose of this study is to determine whether coping skills training, when combined with usual medical care, can reduce pain and disability in adolescents with fibromyalgia. Study hypotheses: 1) Adolescents who receive coping skills training combined with their usual medical care will show significantly greater reductions in functional disability, pain, and depressive symptoms at the end of the acute treatment phase than adolescents who receive fibromyalgia education with their usual medical care. 2) Adolescents who receive coping skills training with their usual medical care will show significantly lower levels of functional disability, pain, and depressive symptoms at the end of a six-month maintenance phase than adolescents who receive fibromyalgia education with their usual medical care.
