Genetic Epidemiology of Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC)
Primary Biliary CirrhosisPrimary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) is a progressive liver disorder of unknown cause. Current evidence suggests that genes, the genetic material we inherit from our parents, in combination with environmental factors, likely play an important role in the development of PBC. This study is being done to investigate whether genes make people more likely to develop PBC. Discovery of these proposed genes will help us better understand how PBC developes, and subsequently, to apply new approaches for its prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
Liver Transplantation Versus Alternative Therapies for Patients With Pugh B Alcoholic Cirrhosis...
CirrhosisLiver transplantation has been universally recognized to improve survival of patients suffering from end-stage (Pugh C) alcoholic cirrhosis. However, for Pugh B patients, the benefit of liver transplantation remains to be demonstrated. The aim of the present study was to compare the outcome of Pugh B patients with alcoholic cirrhosis randomly assigned for immediate liver transplantation (group 1) or standard treatments (group 2).
Point-of-Care Echocardiography to Assess Impact of Dynamic Cardiac Function, Renal and Cardiac Biomarkers...
Hepatorenal SyndromeCirrhosis4 morePoint-of-care echocardiography (POC-Echo) is used to determine left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction (LVDD), inferior vena cava (IVC) dynamics and volume status in cirrhosis and Acute-on-chronic liver failure ACLF accurately. We will assess IVC dynamics, LV systolic function [LV ejection fraction (EF) & cardiac output (CO)], and diastolic dysfunction (E/e', e' and E/A ratio) and urinary biomarkers (cystatin C and NGAL) in patients with cirrhosis and ACLF with hepatorenal syndrome-acute kidney injury (HRS-AKI).
Surveillance and Treatment Of Primary Hepatocellular Carcinoma: An International Prospective Observational...
Liver CancerLiver Cirrhosis2 moreThis study has two purposes. One is to conduct a phase IV biomarker validation study in which the investigators will prospectively survey a cohort of patients at risk for liver cancer using semi-annual abdominal ultrasound and GALAD Score for 5 years. The GALAD score is a serum biomarker-based panel that can aid in early detection among patients with a high risk for liver cancer. One is to establish a bio-repository of longitudinally collected bio-specimens from patients with fibrosis/cirrhosis as a reference set for future research.
Short Term Feeding for Asian Patients With Liver Cirrhosis
CIRRHOSISThe benefits of short-term naso-gastric feeding in patients with advanced cirrhosis remain uncertain. This was a randomised study comparing naso-gastric feeding and oral feeding in Asian patients with cirrhosis who were admitted to hospital for decompensation.

Mindfulness and Support Group to Improve Patient and Caregiver Burden in Cirrhosis
CirrhosisChronic liver disease and cirrhosis pose a huge financial burden to the health care system. This includes the cost of medical care, employment, disability-related issues and reduced survival. Specifically, the complication of cirrhosis known as hepatic encephalopathy (HE) especially hinders quality of life, the performance of activities of daily living and the ability to drive a motor vehicle in affected subjects. The hidden burden to family members and caregivers of these subjects, however, has been all but ignored to date. Evaluation of family members and caregivers is essential. The burden of caring for someone with liver disease can result in added cost for health care for family members and caregivers and is typically not recognized. The importance of the burden to families and family members or caregivers resulting from other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's has been well evaluated and specific strategies to educate and counsel family members and caregivers have been elaborated. This is important because as the findings of this study have emerged, we have found that both Veterans and non-Veterans with cirrhosis and HE have a poor quality of life, worse socio-economic status and place a significantly higher burden on their family members or caregivers than those without HE
FibroScan™ in Pediatric Cholestatic Liver Disease (FORCE)
Biliary AtresiaAlagille Syndrome4 moreNoninvasive monitoring of liver fibrosis is an unmet need within the clinical management of pediatric chronic liver disease. While liver biopsy is often used in the initial diagnostic evaluation, subsequent biopsies are rarely performed because of inherent invasiveness and risks. This study will evaluate the role of non-invasive FibroScan™ technology to detect and quantify liver fibrosis.
A Study of Experimental Medication BMS-986036 in Adults With Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)...
Liver FibrosisNonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)1 moreThis is a study of experimental medication BMS-986036 given to adults with Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH; the buildup of fat and inflammation in the liver that is not caused by alcohol) and stage 3 liver fibrosis (severe fibrosis).
TIPS With Coated Stents for Refractory Ascites in Patients With Cirrhosis
CirrhosisThe main end point of the study is to assess survival in cirrhotic patients with refractory ascites treated by TIPS (using PTFE covered stents) vs patients treated by paracentesis + albumin infusion.
