The Very Old Intensive Care Patient: A Multinational Prospective Observation Study

Critical IllnessOld Age; Debility1 more

The primary aim is to document the incidence and short-term outcome of the elderly ICU patient (≥ 80 years) using a multicentre, multi national approach The secondary aim is to investigate the properties of a simple frailty index in this cohort, and in particular if this is an instrument that can be used in resource and outcome prediction in this group To create hypothesis for further studies, in particular on various outcome prediction

Different Frailty Scores to Incidence of Post-operative Delirium and Cognitive Dysfunction

Frail Elderly SyndromePostoperative Delirium1 more

Patients who are frail will have higher rate for post-operative morbidities, mortality, prolonged hospital stays, loss of independence, increase in institutionalization, post-operative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) and delirium (POD). So, it is crucial to find a suitable frailty assessment tool that can be incorporated into a guideline and reference for our local setting in geriatric peri-operative management. In the mean time, create awareness regarding the frailty elderly population with POD, POCD and other associated poor outcomes among our clinicians.

Frailty in Daily Practice: Screening, Consultation and Education Activities

Frailty

The present study is designed to to estimate the prevalence of frailty and pre-frailty and their associated factors in community-dwelling populations aged 50 years and above in Hong Kong, and to explore the views of participants taking part in a community health talks or activities on frailty about what the participants felt or had gained from participating, concerns, and suggestions for change or improvement. A survey of 15000 people aged 50 years or older identified in community facilities will be conducted. The participants will be invited to their affiliated centres for a brief screening using the FRAIL scale and assessment. A series of community health talks or activities on frailty will be offered to the participants based on the frailty status.Questionnaire and screening tools will be administered by trained researchers.

Frailty Assessment Among Kidney Transplant Candidates

FrailtyKidney Transplant; Complications

Frailty is common among chronic kidney disease patients who are on the kidney transplant (KT) waiting list. The aim of this study is to assess frailty according to different frailty tools among KT candidates and to establish potential biomarkers of frailty.

Feasibility and Acceptability of the Clinical Frailty Scale in a Swedish Emergency Department Setting...

Frailty

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). The scale can potentially be adopted for daily use in the Emergency Department (ED) and have been evaluated with regard to feasibility to a certain extent, but have so far not been evaluated in the Swedish emergency care context.

Frailty, Outcomes, Recovery and Care Steps of Critically Ill Patients

Critical Illness

This pilot study will study the impact of critical illness and ICU processes of care on the trajectory and development of frailty. It is hypothesize that frailty in survivors of critical illness will be measurable at hospital discharge, will correlate with processes of care while in ICU and will better discriminate long term outcomes when compared to severity of illness or the degree of frailty present on ICU admission. This pilot study will be conducted in a tertiary medical surgical ICU at Kingston General Hospital- Kingston, Ontario. It will inform the feasibility, timelines and sample size for the multi-center study and will allow for the refinement of study procedures and data collection methods. This study will be published separately as a stand-alone pilot.

Frailty Assessment Before Cardiac Surgery & Transcatheter Interventions

Aortic StenosisCardiac Valve Replacement Complication1 more

Frailty is a state of decreased physiologic reserves and vulnerability to stressors. Several tools exist to measure frailty, some based on physical tests and others on questionnaires, yet there is no agreement on which tool to recommend. This multi-center prospective cohort study is aimed at comparing various frailty assessment tools to determine which best predicts death or major complications after cardiac surgery or transcatheter intervention. The population of interest is elderly patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing surgical or transcatheter aortic valve replacement. The frailty assessment tools under investigation include composite frailty scales, physical performance tests, muscle mass, and biomarker expression. The overall objective is to improve our ability to predict risk by measuring frailty using the optimal tool in elderly cardiovascular patients.

Preemptive Use of Convalescent Plasma for High-risk Patients With COVID-19

Covid19Immuno-Deficiency1 more

Convalescent plasma therapy has been recognized as safe and plasma transfusion is routinely used in clinical practice. A recent study showed that early administration of convalescent plasma can decrease the risk of complications in specific high-risk population. The aim of the present study is to offer convalescent plasma therapy to immunocompromised patients and older adults in the early phase of a SARS-Cov-2 infection in order to accelerate viral clearance and prevent complication

Inter-rater Reliability of the Clinical Frailty Scale in a Swedish Emergency Department Setting...

Frailty

Frailty is a common clinical syndrome in older adults, which may be assessed through various assessment tools. One frequently used tool is the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) which potentially can be adopted for daily use in the Emergency Department and has been appraised for reliability to some extent, but have so far not been evaluated in the Swedish emergency care context. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) in a clinical Swedish Emergency Department (ED) setting. Members of multidisciplinary emergency care teams will conduct the assessments individually.
