A fall in the elderly is defined by the WHO as "an event in which a person [over 65 years of age] inadvertently falls to a lower level on the ground or other surface than they were previously at". The severity of the consequences of falls is correlated with the age of the person who suffers them, making people over 65 at risk. Since 2000, the number of falls among the elderly has not decreased, including in institutions. Today, the direct and indirect costs of falls are estimated at 1.7 billion euros in France. The French National Authority for Health (HAS) stresses that the lack of success of prevention policies is due in particular to the lack of evaluation and prevention resources. In nursing homes, this lack of resources is sometimes used to justify passive restraint to ensure the safety of participants. However, this method poses the problem of the free movement of residents within the institution. The fall detection technologies already on the market do not allow for the assessment of the risk of falling and therefore for early action. Based on the latest scientific data in static posturography, researchers at the Borelli Centre have developed posturographic markers whose non-linear analysis makes it possible to establish an objective and clinically relevant score based on the study of the displacement of the centre of pressure. In contrast to the techniques commonly used in the laboratory to study balance (which are not usable in health care institutions because of their cost, lack of transportability and the expertise required to explore the recorded data), this method of measurement allows health care professionals to quickly and easily measure the balance of participants in routine consultations. Thus, special attention and targeted rehabilitation can then be implemented to prevent falls and their consequences.

Walking Ability and Limit of Stability in Children With Spastic Cerebral Palsy

Trunk control in children with spastic Cerebral Palsy (CP) is impaired. They have weaker trunk muscle strenght, and insufficient sitting/standing balance according to their developing peers. Since their weak trunk muscles and insufficient balance responses, they are not able to walk as functional similar to their peers. Additionaly limit of stability is worsen in children with CP. Investigation of the relationship between walking ability and limit of stability when seated position is important to understand which child is acceptable for training of walk. However we did not found any study to explain it. Therefore the aim of this study is to investigate walking ability and limit of stability in children with spastic CP, and to compare their developing peers.

The purpose of the study is to validate the use of smart and widespread instruments to detect kinematic, kinetic and spatio-temporal parameters in gait and postural analysis in hemiparetic and healthy individuals. Device as single Microsoft sensor Kinect v2, wearable sensorized clothing and/or smartphone-type devices will be used; it is also planned to analyze and compare such parameters with those obtained through a technique of manual palpatory analysis. Finally the obtained measures will be compared with the corresponding ones obtained with Three-dimensional instrumented gait analysis (3D-GA).

Use of Inertial Sensors to Characterize the Fatigability of Post-stroke Hemiplegic Patients

This is an experimental, observational, prospective study designed to develop medical knowledge. The main objective of the study was to identify clinically significant, easily interpretable, quantitative indices of fatigue-related gait pattern changes in post-stroke hemiplegic patients. This study is part of a usual framework of management of post-stroke hemiplegic patients with additional data collection, via the use of inertial measurement units, considered here as non-interventional. To achieve this identification, 2 6-minute walk tests will be performed for each patient at the beginning and end of the same day. Patient-perceived fatigue will be recorded by the Borg scale every minute during the 6-minute test. The level of activity during the rehabilitation day is also part of the data collected (number of hours of physical and non-physical activity). At the end of the second 6-minute test, the patient's participation in the study ends. In addition to the inertial measurement, two scores will be collected to assess the correlation between fatigability and the level of anxiety/depression and stroke severity : National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD)

This is an experimental, observational, prospective study designed to develop medical knowledge. The primary objective of the study is to analyze the weight bearing of the hemiplegic side according to the different areas of interest during the practice of table tennis. This study is part of a usual framework of management of post-stroke hemiplegic patients with an additional passage to the movement laboratory to collect additional data collection, via the use of force plateforms, considered here as non-interventional. The passage to the movement laboratory consists in the practice of a table tennis session including three game situations. Before to the table tennis session, the subject placed on the force plateforms, performs a spontaneous bipodal station followed by a maximum voluntary support transfer on the hemiplegic limb. During the table tennis session, the subject is filmed and his load on the hemiplegic side during the game situations is evaluated using the force platforms. In addition of the table tennis session three questionnaires are administered to the patient in order to know : The static and dynamic balance in order to identify persons at risk of falling: Berg Balance and Evaluation Scale The degree of autonomy of the patient: Modified Rankin Score The Stroke severity: NIHSS score

This is a prospective observational study looking at gait-cadence in older adults who are scheduled to have major abdominal surgery at the University of Chicago. The objective of the study is to evaluate whether gait-cadence, as measured from a patient's mobile device at-home, can provide an accurate assessment of a patient's functional status prior to major abdominal surgery and identify patients at risk of poor functional outcomes.

The former aim of this study is to determine whether the arm swings change in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) according to healthy subjects. The latter purposes to investigate the correlation between balance parameters and arm swing, how to change arm swing according to severity of the disease, and to determine the relationship between balance and the severity of disease, the relationship of posture both arm swing and severity of disease in patients with COPD. In accordance with this purposes, 20 patients with COPD who have Global Initiative for Chronic Obstruction Lung Disease (GOLD) stage 1-2-3 and 20 healthy controls will be included between the ages of 40 and 65, respectively. Tests and questionnaires will be used in order to determine the severity of COPD and to evaluate posture. Berg Balance Scale, Time Up and Go Test, 6 Minute Pegboard and Ring Test, 6 Minute Walk Test and gait analysis will be performed. It is expected that by determining the parameters that can be affected by severity of COPD. It is estimate to have information about severity of the disease by means of observational analysis. It will guide professional working in the field.

Mimicking Slipping Responses Using a Novel Mechanical Perturbation Algorithm

Healthy subjects will be invited to fill out a questionnaire regarding falls and balance skills followed by normal walking trials on a treadmill at 9 different speeds (0.28-1.4 m/s). Key gait parameters for the normative database will be collected. During the perturbation trials, the subjects will walk at a constant speed (1.2 m/s). The treadmill belts are ac, - or decelerated during the perturbations according to three different perturbation algorithms with varying perturbation onset. Movements will be analyzed by 3D motion capture, force plates, surface electromyography and IMU sensors. All methods are non-invasive and commonly used in the field of biomechanics.
