Immunonutrition and Quality of Life of Cancer Patients Undergoing Oncological Treatment

Gastrointestinal Cancer

The purpose of this study is to compare the health-related quality of life following dietary supplementation with an immunonutrition formulation vs an isocaloric/isoprotein control diet supplement in patients suffering from upper digestive tract neoplasia undergoing oncological treatment.

Venous Thromboembolism and Haemostatic Disturbances in Patients With Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer...

ThrombosisDeep Venous Thrombosis5 more

Cancer is a well known risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE) such as deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Today we know that patients with adenocarcinomas of the gastro intestinal tract (GI-tract) often is in a hypercoagulable state. In our observational study we collect patients admitted to department with a tentative diagnosis of upper GI cancer including pancreas cancer and offer them flow doppler ultrasounds of both legs for diagnosis of DVT in the entire treatment time. The routine CT-scan of the chest is modified to diagnose PE. This will be compared with blood samples analysed for coagulation markers including D-dimer - a fibrinogen degradation product.

Skeletal Muscle Energy Metabolism in Undernourished Patients With Gastrointestinal Cancer

UndernutritionGastrointestinal Cancer

Undernutrition associated with cancer, or cancer cachexia results from a deterioration of the energy balance that leads to a gradual mobilization of energy reserves in the body and to increasing deterioration of the nutritional status of patients. This will thus significantly reduce quality of life and survival of patients with a lower tolerance to cancer treatments. Despite undeniable progress in knowledge, many pathophysiological mechanisms remain few or not explored, which could explain that there is still no satisfactory therapeutic solution to halt the gradual deterioration of the nutritional status of patients. In this sense, apart from preclinical data obtained in animal models, there is currently no clinical study on the functioning of skeletal muscle energy metabolism in undernourished patients suffering of cancer.

Acupuncture for Unintentional Weight Loss and Anorexia With GI Cancer

Malignant Neoplasm of Gastrointestinal Tract

Patients with cancer often experience appetite loss and weight loss unintentionally. Rapid weight loss negatively impact on physical functioning, quality of life, and overall survival. Patients will be randomly assigned into two groups. An intervention with acupuncture may slow down or stop the progression of cancer-related anorexia and weight loss.

Early Integrated Supportive Care Study for Gastrointestinal Cancer Patients

Cancer

Currently at the BC Cancer Agency, oncologists decide when to refer a patient to the Pain and Symptom Management/Palliative Care (PSMPC) team, and their decisions are made subjectively and without standard guidelines/symptom assessment tools. Patients are often referred late in their treatment. The PSMPC team sees patients in their own clinic, separately from the oncologists, and do not often collaborate in a patient's care. Early integration of palliative care into oncological care has been shown to improve quality of life and to prolong survival, as well as to reduce inappropriately aggressive oncological care at end of life, and reduce costs of care. We will test an early oncology-integrated palliative care model, with the aims of determining whether 1) the introduction of PSMPC support at the time of diagnosis leads to better symptom management and quality of life of patients, 2) early integration of palliative care into medical oncology care reduces aggressiveness of cancer treatment near end of life, and 3) a fully integrated service delivery model is sustainable.

A Multicenter Clinical Trial of Stool-based DNA Testing for Early Detection of Colon Cancer in China...

Colorectal CancerAdvanced Adenocarcinoma4 more

According to data from Global Cancer Statistics 2018, colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks second in incidence and fifth in mortality among all cancers in China. The underlying neoplastic progression from adenoma to CRC endures up to 10 years, providing an extended window for CRC detection and screening. Currently, fecal occult blood test (FOBT) and colonoscopy are the main diagnostic and screening methods for CRC in Chinese clinical practice. However, due to low patients' compliance with colonoscopy and poor sensitivity of FOBT, a large proportion of CRC could not be effectively diagnosed and treated at early stage. Therefore, noninvasive fecal DNA detection approach with enhanced performance is urgently needed in clinic. The aim of this trial is to evaluate effectiveness of the Human Multigene Methylation Detection Kit (Fluorescent PCR) for auxiliary diagnosis of colorectal cancer. By assessing the level of DNA methylation of certain genes in human stool, the test can indicate whether cancerous and precancerous lesions exist in the areas of colon and rectum.

Effectiveness of Low Dose Aspirin in Decreasing the Chance Getting Stomach and Intestine Cancer...

Gastrointestinal Cancer

In this study, researchers wanted to learn more about the effect of Aspirin taken as low dose (75 - 300 mg) in preventing stomach, colorectal and esophagus cancer. The researchers were interested in the effect by duration of aspirin use and the effect on the time since aspirin intake has been stopped in preventing stomach, colorectal and esophagus cancer. In addition, the study also looked into the time patients survived after being diagnosed (survival rate) with cancer and number of cancer patients who died (case fatality rate). The study was based on an electronic database managed by the Health Authority in Hong Kong containing anonymized clinical information of patients living in Hong Kong.

Transitoriness in Cancer Patients, Psychosocial Issues in Cancer Care

Lung CancerGastrointestinal Cancers

Transitoriness can be defined as confrontation with life's finitude. Cancer patients are perceived to experience this confrontation due to their diagnosis. It is perceived to impact cancer patients' ways of coping with the disease situation. In this study, cancer patients' levels of uncertainty, transitoriness and their perceived locus of control are assessed. It is aimed at exploring the association of uncertainty, locus of control, transitoriness and quality of life. If a stronger correlation of one or the other issue with quality of life can be discovered, it will inform the development of an adequate evidence-based nursing intervention to better support patients' coping with the disease.
