Impact of Self-visualization of Epileptic Seizures on Patients' Perception of the Disease and Risk...

EpilepsyEpilepsy; Seizure2 more

In Spain, an estimated 690,000 persons have epilepsy, of whom 270,000 have active epilepsy (defined as those who have had a seizure in the last 5 years). It is estimated that 30% of patients diagnosed with epilepsy are drug-resistant. Patients with loss of consciousness or impaired awareness during seizures are at higher risk of injury due to accidents. To prevent such injuries, it is important that patients are sufficiently knowledgeable about their disease to allow them to avoid risk behavior. In this project, we want to know if visualization of self seizures has an impact on the perception of the severity of the disease, as well as on the risky behavior habits.

Investigation of the Clinical Safety and Efficacy of Long-term Treatment With Fycompa Tablets in...

Partial Seizures (With or Without Secondary Generalized Seizures)Primary Generalized Tonic-clonic Seizures

The objective of this study is to identify the following in adult epilepsy participants with partial-onset seizures (with or without secondary generalized seizures) or primary generalized Tonic-clonic seizures who receive long-term treatment with Fycompa: unknown adverse drug reactions (ADRs); occurrence of ADRs; factors that are likely to affect safety and efficacy; occurrence of dizziness, balance disorders, ataxia, muscle relaxation-related adverse events, and falls as priority investigation items; occurrence of psychiatric adverse events as priority investigation items (eg, aggression).

Assessment of the Emfit Mattress Sensor for Detection and Alarm of Night-time Generalized Tonic-clonic...

EpilepsySeizures

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the most important epilepsy-related mode of death. The exact mechanism of SUDEP is not known. It is thought that cardiac and respiratory factors are involved. Several ways of preventing SUDEP have been identified. These include seizure control, stress reduction, physical activity, family's ability to perform CPR, and night supervision. A mattress alarm system that monitors nocturnal seizures can alert family members of night time seizure activity. Thus, a family member could provide aid and therefore potentially avoid SUDEP. The Emfit monitor is intended to perform these tasks. Investigators tested the Emfit mattress monitor DVM-GPRS-V2 in combination with the Emfit bed sensor L-4060SL in the epilepsy monitoring unit and were able to demonstrate that the device has a high predictive value for detection of generalized convulsions and that it can notify caregivers in the early stages of convulsive activity. This study will further investigate the upgraded (connected to a cloud server via an integrated cellular GPRS module) Emfit mattress monitor DVM-GPRS-V2 and the upgraded Emfit mattress sensor L-4060SLC in combination with an acoustic and new cloud-based notification system.

Investigation on the Value of Bilateral Index (BIS) Monitoring for Magnetic Seizure Versus Electroconvulsive...

Depression

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been shown to be an effective treatment for patients suffering from depression, who do not respond to medical treatment. However it is often dismissed by patients, who feel uncomfortably about the application of electric shocks to their heads. In 2000, magnetic seizure therapy (MST) has been introduced which uses magnetism instead of electricity to evoke convulsions. MST seems to be as effective as ECT in terms of its antidepressant potency but may be associated with less severe cognitive side effects. Control of anaesthesia during seizure therapy is demanding since light anesthesia might be associated with awareness, whereas deep anesthesia impedes the antidepressant effect of the convulsion. Therefore, Bispectral index (BIS) monitoring is frequently used to tailor anaesthesia for ECT, however little is known about BIS following MST. The investigators hypothesize that in comparing MST with ECT, (a) patients show a faster increase in BIS and that (b)less left-right differences occur in BIS.

Drug Utilization and Safety Events Among Children Using Esomeprazole, Other Proton Pump Inhibitors...

Hospitalized Cases of Angioneurotic OedemaPneumonia4 more

The purpose of this study is To describe patient characteristics and drug usage among children that are prescribed esomeprazole for the first time and to compare them with patients who are prescribed other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2-receptor antagonists for the first time. To ascertain all incident hospitalized cases of angioneurotic oedema, pneumonia, gastroenteritis, failure to thrive, convulsions/seizures, acute interstitial nephritis and thrombocytopenia among new users in the three cohorts of esomeprazole, other PPIs and H2-receptor antagonists.

Pharmacokinetics of Understudied Drugs Administered to Children Per Standard of Care

AdenovirusAnesthesia57 more

Understudied drugs will be administered to children per standard of care as prescribed by their treating caregiver and only biological sample collection during the time of drug administration will be involved. A total of approximately 7000 children aged <21 years who are receiving these drugs for standard of care will be enrolled and will be followed for up a maximum of 90 days. The goal of this study is to characterize the pharmacokinetics of understudied drugs for which specific dosing recommendations and safety data are lacking. The prescribing of drugs to children will not be part of this protocol. Taking advantage of procedures done as part of routine medical care (i.e. blood draws) this study will serve as a tool to better understand drug exposure in children receiving these drugs per standard of care. The data collected through this initiative will also provide valuable pharmacokinetic and dosing information of drugs in different pediatric age groups as well as special pediatric populations (i.e. obese).

Pediatric Seizure Movement Bed Alarm

SeizuresSleep1 more

Nocturnal seizure and Sudden unexplained death in epilepsy patients (SUDEP) are major concerns for parents and creates anxiety and poor sleep conditions for many families dealing with epilepsy. An accurate and reliable system for alerting parents to ongoing seizure activity could make a substantial impact in quality of life and possibly reduce the mortality of epilepsy. No previous studies in the pediatric population have been performed to evaluate this type of monitoring for seizure activity. This is one of the most common questions parents ask in clinic, "Are there any alarms that can tell me when my child is having a seizure at night?" Currently the answer is no. This study has the capability to give us data that may change this answer to yes.

Lacosamid-i.v.-Register

Epilepsy With Partial Onset Seizures With or Without Secondary Generalization

Lacosamide is a new antiepileptic drug (AED) marketed as Vimpat with three different formulations, tablets, oral syrup and a solution for intravenous infusion. Lacosamide is approved as adjunctive therapy in epilepsy patients with partial onset seizures with or without secondary generalization. The i.v. solution is used in patients in which oral administration is not possible or adequate. Bioequivalence with oral tablets and safety could be demonstrated in healthy volunteers and in patients switched from tablets to Lacosamide i.v. solution. A recently published study demonstrates the feasibility of single loading doses up to 300 mg. The aim of this Lacosamide i.v. registry is to collect systematically data on the safety, tolerability and administration procedures when Lacosmide i.v. is used in routine daily clinical practice, mainly in hospitals. These data will help treating physicians to optimize the use of Lacosamide i.v. in clinical routine.
