Currently, in the pathogenesis of diabetes and the regulation of glucose metabolism, the role of tissue hormones, including adipokines, e.g., omentin-1, visfatin, have been considered. Adipokines might also affect the development of the fetus - mainly fetal adipose tissue gain. Their concentrations and activity depend on the maternal visceral fat content and concomitant metabolic disorders. It is known that adipokines are excreted in human milk during the lactation period. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of diabetes during pregnancy, requiring treatment with diet or insulin, on the nutritional status of the newborn.
Study of Postprandial Incretin Response in Women With Gestational Diabetes

At the experimental days we performed a mealtest and drew blood for analyses of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), insulin, C-peptide and glucagon. The researchers aimed to investigate whether women with gestational diabetes mellitus exhibit decreased postprandial GLP-1 responses, and if so, whether this deficiency ceases following delivery when normal glucose tolerance is reestablished.
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Cardiometabolic Syndrome in Offspring
Gestational Diabetes MellitusGestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) has long been known as leading to macrosomias, neonatal hypoglycemias and other complications which are treatable and preventable. Nowadays, GDM is recognized as an entity with long-term serious sequels to the mother (GDM is considered a forerunner of type 2 diabetes) and her offspring. Indeed, according to the programming hypothesis, GDM sets the stage for metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. However, these cross-sectional studies failed to control for maternal disease history and genetic background although heredity is a major epidemiology risk factor of type 2 diabetes. Also, studies usually refer to traditional markers such as BMI, blood pressure, lipids profile and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); none explored inflammatory biomarkers and adipokines in-depth, despite the possible link between their presence and the development of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases in GDM offsprings. Exclusion of genetic confounding factors will help establish the role of GDM as an independent marker of cardiometabolic risk in GDM offspring. It is highly relevant to identify GDM as a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases, given the worldwide obesity epidemic, the alarming prevalence increase of GDM and its serious sequels to both mother and offspring.

Association Between Trimethylamine-N-oxide and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus
Gestational DiabetesBackground: The microbiota-dependent metabolite trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) has been reported as a novel and independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, but the association with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) remains unclear. Objective: To investigate the association between plasma TMAO concentration and GDM in a two-phase study. Design: The initial discovery phase included 866 pregnant women (433 GDM cases and 433 matched controls) in Wuhan China. Study participants were recruited from pregnant women who attended the outpatient clinics of the Department of Endocrinology, Tongji Hospital, to screen for GDM between August 2012 and April 2015, or pregnant women who visited the Hubei Maternal and Child Health Hospital or the Central Hospital of Wuhan for a routine antenatal checkup from May 2014 to November 2016. The inclusion criteria of participants were: age ≥ 20 years, gestational age between 24 and 32 weeks, no history of a diagnosis of diabetes or gestational diabetes, and no history of receiving pharmacological treatment known to affect glucose metabolism. An independent replication phase study was nested within an ongoing prospective cohort study, namely the Tongji Maternal and Child Health Cohort (TMCHC). Beginning in January 2013, women receiving prenatal care prior to 16 weeks of gestation were invited to join the TMCHC. Exclusion criteria included pre-pregnancy diabetes, clinically significant neurological, endocrinological or other systemic diseases and multiple pregnancies. All enrolled pregnant women received a regular prenatal checkup in hospital and underwent an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during 24-32 weeks of gestation to screen for GDM. 276 members who developed GDM before May 2016 and had fasting blood collected before 20 weeks'gestation were included as cases in this analysis. Two controls were individually matched to each case from among women without GDM. These two studies were approved by the ethics committee of Tongji Medical College. All the participants gave informed written consent before they were included in the study. Plasma TMAO concentrations were determined by stable isotope dilution liquid chromatography with online electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry.
