Genetic Causes of Growth Disorders
Short StatureGrowth Disorder2 moreBackground: - Some growth disorders are caused by a change in genes. Genes are the instructions the body uses to function. Changes in genes often cause them not to work correctly. Researchers want to use a new technology called exome sequencing, to look at many genes at once. This is done by looking at DNA from blood or saliva in a lab. This method may help find the cause of disorders that researchers haven t been able to find using past methods. Objectives: - To better understand genetic causes of growth disorders. Eligibility: - Children and adults with growth disorders and their family members. Design: Participants will give a small sample of blood and/or saliva. Researchers will purify DNA from the sample. They will perform exome sequencing and other tests to look for changes in genes. Some participants may receive limited or no genetic tests. Researchers will let them know if exome sequencing is performed. Participants may have a medical history, physical exam, and lab tests. They may have x-rays or ultrasound tests to study the disorder in their family. Some participants may be recommended for a specific genetic test from a commercial lab. They may have to pay for that test. Participants will be told about test results that relate to the growth disorder. This may happen up to years after the testing. They may have to give another blood and/or saliva sample. Some participants may get results about other health conditions. This will only happen if the information would help the person or their family protect their health. They may have to give another blood and/or saliva sample.

A stunted mother has a tendency of having adverse neonatal outcomes including growth restriction. The multidisciplinary intervention followed by micronutrient supplementation is developed to prevent these adverse outcomes. Zinc has been associated with better neonatal growth and brain growth. This study aims to assess the impact of family-based health education programs plus zinc supplementation on the important biomarker of pregnancy and neonatal growth. Child Health, Agriculture and Integrated Nutrition
StuntingCHAIN is an open-label, individually randomized trial of improved infant and young child feeding (IYCF) versus "IYCF-plus" among 192 infants enrolled between 5-6 months of age in Shurugwi district, rural Zimbabwe. Interventions comprise sequential behaviour-change interventions delivered by village health workers together with food supplements. In the IYCF arm, infants will receive white maize and small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplement (SQ-LNS) daily from 6 months of age. In the IYCF-plus arm, infants will receive orange pro-vitamin A-biofortified maize, and SQ-LNS, plus powdered sugar beans, moringa and whole egg powder. The primary outcome will be the proportion of infants in each trial arm reaching daily energy requirements at 9 months of age (visit window 9-11 months of age). Secondary outcomes are other nutrient intake, anthropometry and haemoglobin. Tertiary outcomes are laboratory measures of microbiome composition, environmental enteric dysfunction, inflammation, innate immune function, circulating choline and essential amino acids, and urinary metabolic profile. Two qualitative substudies will explore i) the feasibility and acceptability of the IYCF-plus intervention; and ii) the influence of migration on household food consumption and production.
