In addition, patients who had discontinued early from the core, blinded phase of the study were contacted. All of these patients were offered the opportunity to enter the unblinded extension phase (if they met eligibility criteria) and continue somatropin treatment (regardless of initial treatment randomization) until they reached final height.

Stunted GrowthStunting2 moreThe overarching objective of this research is to detect poor growth and delayed development early in childhood by developing an automated growth-screening algorithm. The screening algorithm will be created using cohort data and piloted for feasibility and acceptability in Tower Hamlets. The ultimate goals are to detect linear growth failure and delayed development early to identify two groups of children: first, children with serious underlying medical disorders, in whom earlier diagnosis and management would improve clinical outcomes; and second, children whose poor growth and/or delayed development is a manifestation of socioeconomic disadvantage, in whom targeted pre-school interventions may improve long term health and education outcomes.
Safety, Acceptability, and Feasibility of Enterade®
StuntingEnvironmental Enteric DysfunctionThis is a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled pilot study to determine the safety, acceptability, and feasible pediatric dosage/tolerability of enterade® solution, an amino acid-based oral rehydration solution (AA-ORS), for potential use in the management of environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) among children aged 12-24 months in Kakamega County, Kenya. Primary objectives: To determine the safety of a 2-week course of AA-ORS among children with length-for-age Z-scores (LAZ) between -1 and -3. To determine the feasibility and best tolerated dose of AA-ORS among children with LAZ between -3 and -1. Secondary objectives: To determine the perceptions among caregivers on the acceptability of AA-ORS as a potential intervention for EED. (Qualitative) Exploratory objectives: To determine the impact of AA-ORS on markers of metabolism, gut dysfunction, systemic inflammation, and micronutrient status among children with LAZ between -3 and - 1. Qualitative results will not be reported on ClinicalTrials.gov.

MalnutritionWidespread food insecurity and malnutrition are largely the main impairing factors for human capital development in Pakistan. Rates of chronic malnutrition are very high, and acute malnutrition is critical: 44% of children under five are stunted and nationwide global acute malnutrition (GAM) rates amongst children under five exceed the WHO critical threshold of 15%. Nutritional status trends also show a deteriorating situation since 1994, when stunting rates were at 36%. This study evaluates the effectiveness of food based interventions to prevent stunting among children under-five years with focus on window of opportunity (1000 days from conception to 2 years) for addressing stunting. Pregnant women, lactating mothers and children 6-59 months will receive supplements on monthly basis in intervention areas, while participants in control areas will receive routine public health services available in the study area.

The programme will emphasis on appropriate nutrition support in the '1000 days' window of opportunity with special focus on proven effective nutrition interventions such appropriate breast feeding, complementary feeding, micronutrient supplementation, malnutrition treatment and prevention, WASH.
Long Term Effects of Nutritional Supplementation on Final Height
Growth DisordersLow Weight1 moreThe proposed study is an extension study to two ongoing double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled studies evaluating the effect of gender-specific nutritional supplementation on growth of short and lean adolescent boys and girls. The aim of the current study is to extend these short term double blind, randomized, placebo controlled studies (one in boys and one in girls) and to add an extension study, which will evaluate the long term effect of the gender specific nutritional supplementation on final height. Patients completing the ongoing studies will be offered to continue treatment with the study formula until final height. Patients reluctant to continue to consume the study formula will be offered to continue followup only during the extension study without any intervention.
