Combination Chemotherapy With or Without Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Recurrent Head...

Head and Neck Cancer

RATIONALE: Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill tumor cells. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Cisplatin and paclitaxel may make tumor cells more sensitive to radiation therapy. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) and giving them with radiation therapy may kill more tumor cells. It is not yet known whether giving radiation therapy together with combination chemotherapy is more effective than giving combination chemotherapy alone in treating head and neck cancer. PURPOSE: This randomized phase III trial is studying radiation therapy and combination chemotherapy to see how well they work compared to combination chemotherapy alone in treating patients with recurrent head and neck cancer that cannot be removed by surgery.

S9709, Laser Surgery Plus Radiation Therapy in Treating Patients With Early Stage Cancer of the...

Head and Neck Cancer

RATIONALE: Laser surgery for cancer of the larynx may have fewer side effects and improve recovery. Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage tumor cells. Combining radiation therapy and laser surgery may kill more tumor cells. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of laser surgery plus radiation therapy in treating patients with early stage cancer of the larynx.

Commensal Oral Microbiota in Head and Neck Cancer

Head and Neck CancerOral Mucositis

The ARMOR Trial will test the efficacy of an oral care protocol to treat oral mucositis (OM) in patients receiving radiation (RT) or chemoradiation (chemoRT) for head and neck cancer. Participants will attend a screening/baseline visit, weekly intervention visits while they are undergoing RT or chemoRT, and a visit 3 months after completing RT or chemoRT. At intervention visits, samples will be collected (such as saliva, oral swabs) and participants will receive their assigned study intervention, either Oral Mucosal Deterging and Dental Prophylaxis protocol (OMDP), which includes a dental cleaning and treatment to the oral mucosa, or a Standard of Care Oral Hygiene, which includes teeth brushing and no treatment to the oral mucosa.

Study Evaluating 111In-Panitumumab for Nodal Staging in Head and Neck Cancer

Head and Neck Cancer

The primary purpose of the study is to assess the safety of 111In-panitumumab as a molecular imaging agent in patients with Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma. The secondary objective is to compare sensitivity and specificity of identifying sentinel lymph nodes by systemic injection of 111In-panitumumab prior to Day of Surgery versus conventional local injection with an optical dye at the time of surgery.

ProvoxLife Adoption Trends for Heat-Moisture Exchanger

Malignant Head and Neck Neoplasm

This study examines factors that affect how often patients who have a total laryngectomy use a ProvoxLife heat-moisture exchanger (HME) system to help improve their lung function. ProvoxLife HMEs are single use heat- and moisture exchangers for patients breathing through a tracheostoma. Information from this study may help doctors learn more about factors associated with patterns of use and how often patients use the ProvoxLife HME system.
