Central Venous Catheter Colonisation Among Critically Ill Patients in Intensive Care Units

Background: Central Venous catheter insertion technique and indwelling time are major risk factors for CVC colonisation. Colonisation occurs through microbial migration and biofilm formation along the catheter insertion tract. This study set out to determine the prevalence and associated factors for central venous catheter colonisation among critically ill patient. No data exists in this clinical setting addressing this topic. Methods: The study population included 100 participants with central venous catheters in situ for at least 24 hours. Catheter tip (distal 5-cm segment) and blood cultures (10mls peripheral blood) were obtained at the time of catheter removal.

The New Orleans Criteria (NOC) and the Canadian CT Head Rules (CCHR) have been developed to decrease the number of normal computed tomography (CT) in mild head injury (MHI). The aim is to compare the clinical performance of these 2 decision rules for indentifying patients with intracranial traumatic lesions and those who required an emergent neurosurgical intervention following MHI.

This is a pilot study to evaluate clinical predictors of intracranial bleeding in elderly patients who present to the emergency department (ED) after a fall. The aim is to assess feasibility and rate of patient recruitment, patient follow up, and to establish a point estimate for the incidence of intracranial bleeding in the investigator's population. Currently there are no guidelines for ED physicians to assess the pretest probability of intracranial bleed in these patients, and no safe way to exclude a bleed without CT.

It has been widely accepted that a split of the deep temporal fascia occurs approximately 2 to 3 cm above the zygomatic arch, named the superficial and deep layers. The deep layer of the deep temporal fascia lies between superficial temporal fat pad and the temporal muscle. However, during the investigators' previous surgeries, the investigators did not find the deep layer of the deep temporal fascia between superficial temporal fat pad and the temporal muscle. This study was conducted to clarify the presence or absence of the deep layer of the deep temporal fascia. And the investigators' clinical study has confirmed the absence of the deep layer of the deep temporal fascia between superficial temporal fat pad and the temporal muscle.

This study will allow researchers to use various types of tests to evaluate cognitive and sensory functions. These tests, referred to as "batteries" will evaluate attention, executive functions, general intellectual functioning, language, memory, motor functions, orientation, personality, selected sensory and perceptual functions, vigilance (alertness), and visual-spatial functions. Children and adult patient will receive different test batteries. The goals of this research study are to; Create descriptions based on the performance of each patient on the test batteries. Then use this information to relate patient behavior to their neurophysiological, neuroradiological, and biochemical descriptions. Define subgroups of patients based on their neurobehavior in order to decrease the variability of psychiatric diagnoses, treatments, and prognoses.
